Nacho Vigalondo’s new film
Colossal
is a genre-subverting monster movie/comedy/psychodrama. In it, Anne Hathaway plays a party girl who discovers out she is telepathically linked to a giant reptile who destroys cities.
“The manual says that when you make a movie, you have to be really specific about the tone,” Vigalondo tells
MovieMaker Magazine
. “But I can’t control myself. I want [the audience’s] expectations to become part of the show. When you watch a film and you’re halfway in, and you’re having fun, and then, suddenly, the movie becomes a drama that’s not funny anymore, that is exciting to me. I want to make movies that seem contradictory.”
