Michel Gondry Tells a Personal Story with ‘Microbe & Gasoline’

"I turned back to myself and some memories."

Director Michel Gondry’s latest film, Microbe & Gasoline, is an intimate friendship story about two pre-teen boys who decide to build their own car in a quest to reach a summer camp full of girls.

“I think especially after Mood Indigo, which was an adaptation of a very iconic French book, I wanted to do something really coming from me, something personal,” Gondry tells Film Comment. “So I turned back to myself and some memories. As I started to collect them, I focused on the friendship that I had developed in my teenage years.”
