Michele Josue’s documentary Matt Shepard Is a Friend of Mine is an intimate documentary about the young man who was notoriously beaten to death in 1998 because he was gay. Using her own personal experiences (Josue went to high school with Shepard) as well as tons of archival images and documents from Shepard’s family, Josue tells the story of Shepard’s too brief life and both the gaping hole he left behind, and how he became the face of a movement.
Josue tells The Credits, “There was a long list of motivations for me to make this film. I was coming across a lot of young people who weren’t even aware of the story. I knew we had a great opportunity to reconnect a new generation to Matt in a human way and re-teach his story.”
