‘Loving’ Captures Magic Hour on 35mm Film

Jeff Nichols’s Loving is an understated drama telling the true story of a Virginia couple in the 1960s brought to trial to contest the illegality of their interracial marriage. 

The movie was shot on 35mm film with anamorphic lenses by Nichols’s longtime cinematographer Adam Stone.

Loving was shot mostly outside during golden hour, and we didn’t latch onto any period movies about the South from the late ’50s or early ’60s, but we did look at Mud as a springboard to take further,” Stone tells IndieWire.
