Jody Lee Lipes Takes a Cinema Verité Approach to Depicting the Art of Ballet

Jody Lee Lipes’ Ballet 422 is a ballet documentary told without talking heads or lower thirds, instead focusing cinema verité-style on New York City Ballet choreographer Justin Peck as he conceives of a piece from start to finish.

As Lipes tells The Huffington Post, “I think the story told itself without needing lower thirds, and I think the story told itself without talking heads. My preference is to feel like something is happening before you, [as you] are watching it. That to me is just more engaging.”
