Liz Garbus, the director of new Netflix documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? sat down with Huffington Post Live to discuss the music legend’s complicated legacy.
“Nina Simone is a very, very complicated woman and her life touches on so many parts of our culture and history,” she said. “She was a classically trained pianist, a child prodigy who started singing in clubs to make a living, her classical dreams thwarted. So there was that aspect of her life that was very important to explore to understand her music. Of course her involvement in the civil rights movement which is so relevant today. And then also her personal life, her personal struggles: her marriage which was very violent and complex. So these are all things that we explore.”
