Directing & Editing ‘The Muppets’

Cinema Editor speaks to James Bobin and James Thomas, director and editor — respectively — of The Muppets, about CGI, directing puppets, staying true to Jim Henson’s legacy and more. Says Thomas, “There’s something intrinsically accessible and pure about the Muppets. I
think this movie comes back to those core values that Jim Henson
infused his creations with. The Muppets deal with very basic human
concerns that we can all relate to. It’s total fantasy with a foundation
of credibility. Our job as editors is to find the grain of truth in
what’s been shot. No matter what genre, if there’s something that
doesn’t ring true to a character, it’s all over. As an editor, I just
pick what feels real to me.”
