‘Cymbeline’ Director Michael Almereyda on Taking on More Obscure Shakespeare

Cymbeline director Michael Almereyda talks to Word and Film about  why he took on an updated version of one of Shakespeare’s lesser-known works.

He says, “It just seemed like an exciting alternative to doing the most familiar, the most performing play by doing the least performed or lesser-known plays. And again, when I say lesser known, Shakespeare’s not unknown. At one point, the distributor had a trailer saying ‘Shakespeare’s lost masterpiece.’ It’s never been lost and not many people call it a masterpiece, but the fact that it’s Shakespeare means it’s still on a very high plane and it’s still rich.”
