‘Batman v Superman’ Cinematographer on Getting Real Grain with 35mm Film

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice cinematographer Larry Fong talks to American Cinematographer about his and director Zack Snyder’s stylistic choices when filming the superhero movie, including the decision to shoot on film.

“We pushed our film one stop for some night exteriors,” explains Fong. “Our philosophy was that if we’re going to shoot film, then don’t be afraid to show a little grain, so when the kids ask why we’re shooting film, we have something to point to. In this age of artificially added grain, flares and film-emulation software, it feels good to do it all for real.”
