‘Anchorman 2’ Gets Retro with PHYX Software

The crew of Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues was tasked with building a functioning 1980s-style cable news studio and creating the featured (and background) videos that appear throughout the newsroom and news studio sets. According to computer and video playback supervisor Todd A. Marks, “This included shooting original content, acquiring stock videos, creating both still and animated graphic elements, and compositing and editing.

“We created dozens of international ‘news feeds’ from on-air newscasters,” he continues. “Our team created this content by video-recording many different actors placed in front of a greenscreen background. We then assembled 30 or 40 vintage SD stock footage sequences of international landmarks to use as background plates. We used PHYX software on almost every composite to separate the ‘newscaster’ from the ‘scene’ he was reporting on. We used the PHYX filters with Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro.”
