Upcoming ‘Modern Family’ Episode to Take Place Entirely on Computer Screen

The February 25th episode of Modern Family, called “Connection Lost,” will take place entirely on Claire Dunphy’s (Julie Bowen) computer screen. As Claire gets sent into a panic that eldest daughter Hayley may have eloped to Vegas, she FaceTimes various members of her family all while Googling, checking email and more.

The episode was also shot entirely on an iPhone 6, iPad and MacBook Pro. As show creator Steve Levitan explained during a press screening, “We thought it would be silly to shoot amazing footage and then dumb it down. It’s going to look amazingly gorgeous but yet real.”

The episode was inspired by Levitan’s own real-life experiences as well as the 2014 short film “Noah,” which also took place entirely on a computer screen. “This is how families are communicating today,” Levitan said. “I see it in my family all the time.”
