1970s Thrillers and Tom & Jerry Cartoons Inspire Ben Wheatley’s ‘Free Fire’

Director Ben Wheatley’s (

High-Rise

) latest film,

Free Fire

, is a 1970s-era crime thriller set almost entirely as one shootout in a giant warehouse.

“I wanted to get back to a kind of scale that I knew from 1970s and 80s cinema that was more character-based but it was also kind of procedural and physical – about cause and effect and physics, stuff like that,” Wheatley tells
