Vortex Media has released more than 50 GB of S-Log and CineGamma test footage for the Sony PMW-F3 camcorder. Vortex Media’s “PMW-F3 S-Log & External Recorders Test Drive” provides professionals the opportunity to compare, evaluate and experiment with 126 original, unedited, ungraded video clips that were recorded with a Sony PMW-F3 camcorder and five popular models of external recorders, including the Convergent Design Gemini 4:4:4, Cinedeck EX, Sound Devices PIX 240, AJA Ki Pro Mini and Convergent Design nanoFlash.

S-Log Test Drive

Sony’s RGB and S-Log Gamma output mode enables the PMW-F3 to output an uncompressed 10-bit RGB 4:4:4 1080p over industry-standard Dual Link HD-SDI.

Vortex Media’s “PMW-F3 S-Log & External Recorders Test Drive” is an efficient way to compare picture quality, playback performance, workflow steps, storage requirements and color grading capabilities of 36 different combinations of settings and codecs in four different shooting setups.

All of the clips are provided as cloned copies of the camera original files, which means they have not been graded, processed, trimmed or manipulated in any way. In addition, the clips were carefully recorded one at a time to optimize the exposure for the particular gamma setting being used and to eliminate problems that might have been induced if the recorders were simply daisy-chained.

S-Log Test Drive - Tabletop

According to Doug Jensen, director of photography for the project, “Using the S-Log Test Drive is really the only way someone can try out and evaluate S-Log and several popular external recorders prior to investing thousands of dollars in hardware and camera upgrades. Our goal with the test drive was to make it possible for anyone to assess the F3’s capabilities using their own workflow and choice of grading and/or editing software so that they can come to their own conclusions.”

The 126 clips include a wide variety of examples for comparison:

  • S-Log vs. CineGamma
  • 8-bit and 10-bit
  • 4:4:4, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0
  • MP4, MOV, DPX, DNxHD, ProRes 422, ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 444, CineForm Film Scan1 and CineForm Keyscan
  • 35 Mb/s, 117 Mb/s, 140 Mb/s, 176 Mb/s, 264 Mb/s, 369 Mb/s, 1500 Mb/s data rates

The S-Log Test Drive also provides 15 pages of documentation with shooting notes, a spreadsheet, exposure data, lens information, white balance values, and a waveform monitor screen capture taken at the time of shooting.
