Swiss-American artist Christian Marclay transfixed audiences at musueums throughout the world with his piece, "The Clock," which wove together images from real films of various clocks and watches designed to reflect the real time as the viewer watched the screen. He received the Golden Lion at the 2011 Venice Biennale and the travelling show remains popular at galleries worldwide whenever it's presented.
His new exhibit, "Surround Sounds," at the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York, is set inside a large, enclosed room. There is no sound, but visual comic-book-style sound effects such as "whizz" and "zoom" fly across the walls. Dan Duraysept says in the New York Times, the artist "employed Adobe After Effects for the animation. As a result, the words are monumental, and in-your-face. They attack you."
An announcement fro the Paula Cooper Gallery, explains Marclay's motivations for creating such an exhibit. "For more than thirty years, he has been exploring the connections between the visual and the audible, creating works in which these two distinct sensorial experiences enrich and challenge each other."
