Peloton Streams Live Fitness Classes

A hybrid hardware and services business, Peloton sells a high-tech indoor stationary bike that uses live video streaming and social media connectivity to deliver an immersive indoor cycling studio experience to users at home. With more than 10 classes live streamed every day, as well as a library of thousands of on-demand classes, Peloton provides video content that can be viewed by home users on the bike’s 22-inch, 1080p touchscreen display, as well as on the Peloton iOS app.

Peloton live video streams are acquired with Panasonic AW-HE130 pan/tilt/zoom cameras installed in Peloton’s marquee studio in Manhattan. The 1080p Panasonic PTZ cameras were selected by systems integrator Bridge Digital for their strong low-light performance, which enables improved video quality in Peloton’s club-like studios, where classes feature live DJs and ambient lighting to motivate riders.

“The HE130 quickly emerged as the best choice for low-light performance and 1080p image production,” says Richie Murray, president of Bridge Digital.

Four HE130s were installed in the 8,000 sq. ft. boutique studio, with one on a Telemetrics rolling camera trolley. The PTZs connect over SDI to a NewTek TriCaster 460 four-camera video production system in the nearby control room. Peloton uses an Elemental Live video encoder and Akamai content delivery network.

Says Nicholas Gismondi, Peloton manager of production operations, “After close to a year in operation, the HE130s have proved ideal for our demanding operations and have allowed us to produce more dynamic broadcasts.”
