Mike Mills on How the Feminists in His Life Inspired His Film '20th Century Women'

Director Mike Mills's new film 20th Centiury Women was inspired by his own mother and sisters and his front-row seat to feminist ideals.

"The feminism in the film comes from being a son, a little brother, and wanting to talk about the women I love in my life," Mills said after a screening, as reported by New York Magazine. He also touched upon the timeliness of the topic. "“But now I do feel like that thing of normalizing such a radical kind of violent disrespect for women, by the president[-elect], just seems like a state of siege that everyone has to fight against, heterosexual, cisgender men included.”
