Inside the Visual Simplicity of 'Loving'

Publish date:

The below video essay from Screen Prism examines the visual simplicity of Jeff Nicols's Loving, shot by Adam Stone, and delves into how a no-frills approach to cinematography keeps the audience invested wholly in the characters and their compelling story.

Loving tells the true story of a quiet interracial Virginia couple whose marriage eventually became the subject of a landmark Supreme Court case.

"The choice to step back and let the actions play out without interference isn't a lazy camera technique," the video essay explains. "It's a philosophy of filmmaking. History jumps out of the textbook giving us something human to connect to: the universal story of two people in love in a world that's hostile to that love."
