Hooligan Experiments with Final Cut Pro

Postproduction boutique Hooligan collaborated with design studio karlssonwilker to develop the music video for “Mexico,” the title track from GusGus’ new album. Experimenting with various 3D technologies and utilizing Apple Final Cut Pro, the teams transformed live-action footage of the band into spellbinding animations.

“I’ve seen work like this as an effect, but not as the primary medium for an entire music video,” says Hooligan editor Shane DeBlasio. “The final renders are beautiful and look as though they weren’t even captured on camera.”

After creating the renders and producing a rough cut in Adobe Premiere Pro, karlssonwilker brought Hooligan on to expand the video with an editorial eye. “It was exciting to edit such a kinetic, VFX-driven piece,” says DeBlasio. “The caliber of design and the range of experimentation that karlssonwilker brought to mapping out all of these 3D points in 2D space took the footage to captivating heights.”

With volumes of data-heavy footage, DeBlasio says he had to clear the project’s biggest hurdles early on. Converting the footage to Hooligan’s system using Apple Final Cut Pro allowed him to generate QuickTime movies rather than deal with problematic individual source frames. “Creating the final cut, my goal was to simply find a through line to make the eclectic sequence of shots as fluid and seamless as possible,” the editor says.

“It was a challenge getting a handle on the footage without the computer freaking out,” DeBlasio concludes, “but once we made sense of everything, it was awesome to edit.
