I began my career as a director and cinematographer shooting film. Since those days, camera equipment and technology have changed dramatically, and we’ve all but abandoned film cameras for smaller capture devices like smartphones and GoPros for on-the-go shooting. With new cameras comes the need for new equipment, and Tiffen’s Steadicam Curve is in greater demand than ever.
I took Tiffen’s Steadicam class years ago and I’ve been a heavy Steadicam user ever since. I’m a big fan of adding interesting camera movement to my shots, but doing so with a GoPro meant I’d have to endure some unwanted shaky movement as well. Mounting the small action camera on a Steadicam Curve, however, allowed the GoPro to blend in with the productions. It became so much easier to integrate it naturally into my shoots.
I recently employed a GoPro and Steadicam Curve on a shoot with an NBA team. We were able to steady the shot while retaining the level of movement we were looking for. Without Curve, the whole shot would have been unusable.
GoPros are small, so if you try to use typical camera equipment with them to keep the shot steady, not only does it look ridiculous, but the shot just won’t come out that great. With Steadicam Curve, my GoPro kit stays small while my shot remains larger than life. Thankfully for me, Curve fits right in.
