When faced with a 20-day shooting schedule for the independent film Kelly & Cal, which stars Juliette Lewis and Cybill Shepherd, director of photography Philip Lott knew he needed a reliable lighting package. He says, “If I was doing anything other than shooting while on set, I was taking away time from the good stuff: the performances.”
He turned to Hive Lighting’s plasma technology, employing the company’s Killer Maxi, two Wasp PARs and two Drone kits retrofitted in ETC Source Four fixtures. Hive’s lights, which offer high output with a low power draw, allowed Lott and his crew to often forgo running distribution boxes. Instead, they were able to use house power, shoot and move on to the next scene.

It addition to the Hive products’ time-saving features, Lott was impressed with the plasma lights’ color quality. He found their output to be consistent, and it reacted well with skin tones. He notes, “We felt the Hive Wasp created a gorgeous, natural look with Juliette’s skin, so we used the lamp as a soft key.”
Lott also had success mixing Hive’s products with traditional 6K and 4K Cine PARs, natural light and practicals: “They blended beautifully together. Hive came in particularly handy when we needed something to match sunlight.”
