Filmed in Secret 'Patria o Muerte' Is a Stark Portrait of Cuba

Director Olatz López Garmendia's new HBO documentary Patria o Muerte: Cuba, Fatherland, or Death provides a startlingly bleak look at the closed-off island nation and its people.

To make it, Garmendia filmed clandestinely over a period of four years, interviewing artists, singers, writers, activists, and regular folks alike. "There are cameras on every corner; there are secret police everywhere. You can’t just interview someone on the street," Garmendia tells Fast Company's Co.Create about the challenges of making the film. "Sometimes it felt like I was kidnapping these people."
