Daniel Myrick and DaVinci Resolve: Editing the New Psychological Thriller 'Under The Bed'

At one point in all of our lives, we are sure that there is something under the bed that is going to get us. Which is where Daniel Myrick takes us in the film Under the Bed.

The film, which will hit theaters in 2015, is inspired by a true life story of a stalker who breaks into his target’s home and lives under her bed. Daniel, who directed and wrote the classic The Blair Witch Project, shot the film entirely in raw with Blackmagic Design’s Pocket Cinema Camera. And he is using DaVinci Resolve to complete both editing and color correction not only during post production, but also on set to ingest raw footage to complete the assembly edits and the first grades of footage.

“The Resolve editing interface is very nice and clean. And it’s great that we have no round-trip to do since everything has stayed in Resolve. But it is also comforting to know that Resolve will easily work with any other system in our post workflow since we will be adding in effects from Premiere and After Effects and using other software,” says Myrick.

One of Resolve’s editing features that Myrick has used frequently is the context-sensitive editing, which allows him to quickly fine-tune and edit by placing the cursor over an edit, letting him ripple, roll, slip, slide and extend or shorten edits without changing tools.

“The context-sensitive icon is a really nice option and lets my editing be fluid. As an editor, the less you have to look down and the more you can keep your eyes on the timeline, the better it is,” Myrick explains. “Resolve really has a robust set of editing features.”

With the theme and imagery of the movie incredibly tense and often claustrophobic, it’s very important for Myrick to tie editing and color correction closely throughout post production to ensure his vision throughout. He is able to edit and grade in conjunction with each other, view native raw material while editing and jump to do first grades on footage with a click.

“Being able to grade as you go is great and looking at native raw files while editing is a real luxury. It really is the changing face of post, where before I had to do temp grades and waste a lot of time going back and forth. With Resolve, I can pop over to color and fix and adjust grades while editing. No more redundant work,” he says.
