The L.A. Times talks to director Benh Zeitlin and cinematographer Ben Richardson about their down and dirty approach to shooting their low-budget, critically acclaimed film Beasts of the Southern Wild.

Says Richardson about the challenges of filming in a swamp, "That was half the fun, if you could physically get the camera into the environment, into the spaces and get the shot — however you accomplish that — you're getting the shots, you're making the movie."
