Ohio’s ACTV Shutting Down in 2020

Points to lack of cable subscribers funding.

ATHENS, Ohio—The final days of 2019 will be the last that viewers in the City of Athens will have to watch Athens Community Television, as the station has announced that it will permanently close on Jan. 1, 2020.

The station had been in operation by the city since 2006 as a nonprofit, financed through cable franchise fees. According to a message on ACTV’s homepage, the closing of the station is “due to a lack of cable subscribers funding.”

The message continues: “ACTV would like to thank all of those involved over the last 14 years, as well as those who were instrumental in developing the basis of Athens Public Access Television in its infancy.”
