The National Institutes on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has extended the date for filing comments on a plan to evaluate the effectiveness of an online substance abuse skills training program for primary care physicians (PCPs).
On Dec. 1, 2010 NIDA posted a Federal Register notice—Proposed Collection; Comment Request; Online Skills Training for PCPs on Substance Abuse—allowing an additional 30 days for public comment on a proposed rule published on the Federal Register on July 28, 2010.
The online skills training for PCPs on substance abuse is a new program developed with funding from NIDA, and its primary goal is to assess the impact of the training program on PCP’s knowledge, attitude, intended behavior and clinical skills on substance abuse, the notice says.
The program also seeks to assess learner satisfaction with the program. If the program is a success, there will be a new, proven resource available to PCPs to improve their ability to assess and treat substance abuse disorders, according to the notice. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the program, information will be collected from PCPs before exposure to the web based materials in a “pre-test”; after exposure to the web based materials in a “post-test”; and four to six weeks after the program has been completed in a follow-up.
