Among the keynote speakers at Government Video Expo, Dec. 1-3 in Washington, are a couple of people who have used the recent rise of social media Websites to spread what their agencies need to say.
Len Sipes Len Sipes of the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency in Washington, D.C., has developed radio and TV services and created a Web presence with visitors from around the nation and the globe. There’s a widely read blog and links to audio and video segments that other agencies are using to help their missions also.
The site gets some 170,000 visits each month.
The agency’s television and radio programming and blog content tackle current issues in law enforcement and offender supervision. One recent posting, for example, addresses the use of GPS supervision of offenders by Washington D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department and the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency. The article recently appeared in the Journal of Offender Monitoring.
Sipes and Producer Timothy Barnes will show how they make technology work not just as a public relations tool but to get actual work done, in “The DC Fugitive Safe Surrender Program – Case Study.” That’s 11:30 a.m. on Weds., Dec. 2.

The social media phenomenon is not lost on the military, with the branches working hard to develop Facebook and Twitter presences and to harness those tools to better serve their personnel and the public at large.
The Pentagon Channel, the best-known channel produced by the federal government, has also woven the new technology into its mission. At GV Expo, Pentagon Channel General Manager Brian Natwick will explain what else he’s doing with the new tools.
Natwick speaks at GV Expo at 3:45 p.m. on Weds. Dec. 2.
GV Expo, Dec. 1-3 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, will also feature more than 120 exhibitors; Apple pro training tracks; Presentations by Avid, Panasonic, VBrick and Artesia; the return of the Meet the Government Producers panel; Broadcast Symposium East featuring panel discussions with top-flight technology professionals; two days of prize drawings for attendees, and a lot more.
