Buyer’s Guide: Understanding the New Range of Storage Options

Options include network-attached storage, portability and removable drive trays.

Dternity from Fujifilm is a data archiving solution that combines the simplicity of disk with the economics of tape in one scalable solution. The system operates inside a pre-existing system to provide a streamlined data storage experience. Dternity uses both traditional on-site storage and cloud vaulting (available online all the time) to provide total data protection, accessibility and mobility.

Data that is archived with Dternity is accessed as network-attached storage. There are no proprietary formats or applications needed to access files. Files can be accessed when and how you need them, using a combination of on-site storage and cloud storage for optimum data accessibility and mobility. Data stored on the cloud is available 24/7.

The Vitec/Focus FS-H50/60/70 recorders simplify acquisition workflow by recording low bit-rate H.264 clips, either concurrently with high-resolution content recorded by a camera or independently. Clips can be immediately streamed to mobile devices and uploaded to networks or video platforms for sharing and collaboration, without transcoding. Focus FS-H50/60/70 professional recorders offer a range of resolutions up to 1080p30 and bit-rates up to 8 Mbps. The three models, FS-H50, FS-H60 and FS-H70 include composite and analog audio inputs, and HDMI input and a HD/SD-SDI input, respectively.

The portable Focus FS-H50/60/70 can be attached to all professional camcorders as well as to video sources such as DSLRs, switchers, POV cameras, broadcast streams and VTRs. It records up to 650 hours of content on a standard 32 GB SDHC card.

The AG-MSU10 is a lightweight mobile storage unit that simplifies backing-up P2 content in the field. The MSU10 offers one P2 card slot and a slot for the removable AG-MBX10 tray; which houses a 2.5-inch hard drive, either rotating or SSD. The unit eliminates the need for computers to backup memory cards, and can quickly free up P2 cards for additional shooting. The AG-MSU10 can be either AC or battery operated, and includes USB 2.0 and eSATA interfaces for quick connection to NLEs.

The AG-MBX10 removable drive tray also includes USB 2.0 and eSATA interfaces. This bus-powered unit can be easily transported from the field and connected to NLEs, including PCs and Macs, to expedite the editing process.

The ATTO ThunderLink product line enables today’s small form-factor Thunderbolt-enabled laptops and devices to connect into high-performance storage and networks, including SAS/SATA, Fibre Channel or 10Gb Ethernet. The ATTO ThunderLink FC 2082 acts as an external Thunderbolt 2 to Fibre Channel adapter, connecting Thunderbolt-enabled all-in-one systems and laptops to 8 Gbps Fibre Channel networks and storage devices. With dual-channel configurations, the 8 Gbps Fibre Channel DeskLink device achieves the highest I/O and data throughput available on a desktop.

ATTO ThunderLink 8 Gbps Desklink devices offer driver support for Mac or later and Windows (Linux when Thunderbolt-enabled systems become available), providing a single connectivity solution for customers with multiple operating system environments.

Quantum’s StorNext 5 primary storage enables high-speed shared data access. Controlled by StorNext 5 data management software, it includes a metadata appliance with a dedicated metadata array and RAID storage for data. StorNext 5 is available with dual metadata controllers with automatic failover, redundant power and cooling, and redundant 8 Gbps Fibre Channel ports. The system works with Linux, Windows, AIX, HP-UX, Solaris and Mac computers, as well as 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps Ethernet.

Storage for a StorNext 5 system is offered in several different chassis and drive sizes that provide a range of capacities, densities and performance for different workflows.

The Video Devices PIX-E7 is a recording monitor that can be used as an HD camera-top display and backup recorder. The display features 1,920 x 1,200-pixel resolution and includes functions such as a waveform monitor, vectorscope, zebra patterns and peaking. The 4K-compatible onboard recorder uses Apple ProRes codecs, including the highest-quality Apple ProRes 4444 XQ. PIX-E7 can record 4K video up to 30 fps, UHD up to 30 fps, and 1080p or 720p up to 60 fps.

The PIX-E7 records to SpeedDrive media, an industry-standard mSATA drive contained within a custom-designed enclosure. The SpeedDrive, which plugs directly into the PIX-E7, doubles as a USB 3.0 thumb drive for high-speed offload to any computer.
