Ben-Gurion University Develops Smart Camera Technology

New technology improves sub-optimal lighting

BEER-SHEVA, ISRAEL—A new type of smart camera technology has come out of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU), as researchers at the school announced they have developed Light Invariant Video Imaging software technology, which is designed to improve picture clarity in sub-optimal lighting and enhance object recognition. This could help boost facial recognition capabilities for security, per BGU.

LIVI is said to eliminate the effects of background or dynamic lighting conditions, which would help deliver shadow-free images with constant color output and improved contrast. The software uses amplitude-modulated light separation, enabling cameras to separate the influence of a modulated light from unwanted light sources in a scene.

The technology was developed by Amir Kolaman, a Ph.D. student, and Professor Hugo Guterman, both in BGU’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

“Our invention produces a ‘flash’ effect that clears the backlight, removes shadows and improves contrast, making all captured frames much clearer,” said Guterman.

“Light intensity can be modulated at different frequencies just like in radio waves,” said Kolaman. “We turn each camera pixel into an AM receiver that tunes to the flash light and filters out the background lights from the output frames.”
