Axis Introduces Arctic-Ready PTZ Cam

Axis also announced a new series of fixed HD day and night cameras.

Axis Communications has a new high-performance PTZ dome camera rated for operation as low as -40 degrees F (-40 C).

Axis Q6032-E

The Axis Q6032-E includes what the company calls Arctic Temperature Control, a new functionality that also allows the camera to power up at that temperature following a power failure.

It’s powered through High Power over Ethernet, which simplifies installation since only one cable is needed for carrying power, as well as video and pan/tilt/zoom controls. With High PoE, the camera can continue to operate even during a power failure as the network can be connected to an Uninterruptible Power Supply. A High PoE midspan is supplied with the camera.

“Axis Q6032-E is a top-performing PTZ dome camera that’s ready right out of the box for mounting outdoors,” said Erik Frännlid, Axis’ director of Product Management. “There is no need to purchase and mount a separate outdoor housing, so it’s quick and easy to install the network camera. Axis Q6032-E meets demanding requirements for superb video quality, high zoom for detailed inspection, fast and precise pan/tilt performance and reliable operation in extreme climates.”

The camera can also operated in temperatures up to 122 degrees (50 C) and has an IP66-rated protection against dust and water.

Other features include automatic day and night functionality, 128x wide dynamic range, progressive scan technology, and a powerful 35x optical and 12x digital zoom with autofocus.

License plates can be read from a distance of 525 feet (160 m), the company said. A moving object within the camera’s field of view can also be automatically detected and followed using the camera’s intelligent auto-tracking functionality.

The Q6032-E uses H.264 video compression. Motion JPEG is also supported for increased flexibility. The camera’s built-in SD/SDHC memory card slot enables recordings to be stored locally.

It will be available to order in June 2009.

Axis also announced a new series of fixed HD day and night cameras, the Axis P13 network cameras, for applications calling for top-notch image quality.

Axis P1343

The new Axis P1343 network camera delivers SVGA resolution and the P1344 and P1346 models offer 1-MP/ HDTV 720p and 3-MP/HDTV 1080p respectively.

The P1346 uses P-Iris control, a new and precise iris control developed by Axis and Kowa Co. that works together with specialized software to automatically and precisely regulate the iris opening to enable better contrast, clarity, resolution and depth of field. The camera also supports DC-iris for backward compatibility.

“This is a revolutionary improvement for video surveillance cameras and for the industry in general as we expect P-Iris to become a standard that eventually replaces DC-iris lenses,” said Johan Paulsson, Axis chief technology officer.

DC-iris (auto-iris) control for surveillance cameras with fixed/varifocal lenses does not enable the camera or user to know the exact position of the iris opening, which is needed in order to optimize image clarity. Axis saw a need to solve this and found Kowa, an innovative optics manufacturer, to jointly develop a solution.
