Stockholm, Sweden â€“ 17 January, 2007 â€“ Digital Vision, the premier supplier of picture enhancement systems for film and television post-production, announced that Swedish post-production house The Chimney Pot used its Film Master system to digitally master and grade the highly-anticipated Sundance dramatic competition film â€œDownloading Nancy.â€?
The film, starring Maria Bello and Jason Patric, is the film directorial debut of long-time commercial and music video director Johan Renck. Itâ€™s the dark tale of an unhappy wife whose online search for someone to put her out of her misery results in a torturous love affair. While the film was shot in Canada, Renck took it to long-time post-production partner The Chimney Pot in Sweden, where it was scanned, then conformed and graded on Film Master by colourist Edward Negussie.
â€?Johan has always been very strong on the creative grading side for videos and commercials,â€? Negussie said. â€?Weâ€™d worked closely many times, and like before, he was very involved in the grade of the film.â€? Negussie noted that while Renck did not create any concentrated â€™looksâ€™ for the film in the digital grade, they worked closely to establish a consistent, cool and desaturated feel across the entire film. â€?We stayed away from warmer reds and yellows and kept the palette on the blue-green side.â€?
That overall look meant that often, the grade was a significant departure from what was captured on film. â€?I used tons of layers and a lot of keying establishing colour tones,â€? he said. â€?Most shots had six or seven layers, and I worked from about ten basic settings. In Film Master a single layer has an enormous amount of controls, so itâ€™s easy to manage sophisticated looks and execute them quickly.â€?
After the grade was complete, the digital master was output to 35mm film for its Sundance debut.
