London, UK – 11 March 2008 – LipSync Post has further cemented its growing reputation as a full-service post-production facility since completing DI, VFX, audio post and deliverables on the forthcoming feature film Good.
Set in 1930s Germany during the rise of national socialism, the film is based on the award winning play by CP Taylor with Viggo Mortensen (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, A History of Violence) in the lead role of John Halder. Directed by Vicente Amorim, the cast includes Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire; Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix), Jodie Whittaker (Venus, St. Trinians) and Mark Strong (Syriana, Stardust).
LipSync’s renowned VFX department was kept busy with many ‘invisible’ but important effects such as compositing reflections onto spectacle lenses through some very tricky camera moves and removing modern-day items from 1930s Frankfurt.
After scanning the 35mm 3 perf. negative at 6k on its pin-registered Northlight film-scanners, LipSync’s Lee Clappison completed the DI work using Quantel’s iQ Pablo, working closely with award-winning DOP Andrew Dunn. The period look was very important to the story to convey the many moods that the story evokes.
Similarly, the director wanted a clean, exciting and fresh soundtrack that invoked the excitement of a society being rejuvenated. The LipSync sound department, led by sound mixer Paul Cotterell and joined by supervising sound editor Paul Davies, began working with the sound recordist before filming started to ensure that their approaches were compatible. The audio was mixed using an AMS Neve DFC desk, running the dialogue, foley and music from Pro Tools systems and FX from a Nuendo system. All the tracks were kept ‘live’ throughout the mix. The sound laybacks were created in LipSync’s sound theatres.
The deliverables – HD-D5, HDCAM SR and multiple digi beta tapes in three aspect ratios – were created in LipSync’s highly calibrated suites. The film was finally output to 35mm via high speed laser recorders and then signed off at one of the largest and most unforgiving screens in the West End, The Vue 5 in Leicester Square.
“I had a great experience producing Good with LipSync; having all departments under one roof made for a slick but flexible post-production process,â€? said Miriam Segal, Producer, Good. “The company also has a ‘face’. You feel like you are being brought into the family and they will look after you and your film, just as they do their employees. I didn’t even hesitate when deciding where to take my next film. I hope that LipSync will remain a great post-production partner for many projects to come.”
“It’s great for us to be able to involve so many departments on one project. Everyone understands from the start what our clients are trying to achieve and can relate more to how the project is coming together, and I think that leads to a more cohesive end result, said Kevin Phelan, Head of Post Production, LipSync Post. “Our clients really appreciate being able to bring their entire projects to us, it’s easier for them to be in one place and the quality of our work in every department fully justifies their faith in us.
Good is planned for theatrical release later this year.
Produced by Good Films Ltd, Good examines the life of ‘everyman’ John Halder (Mortensen), a ‘good’ and decent individual with family problems: a neurotic wife, two demanding children and a mother suffering from senile dementia. A literary professor, Halder explores his personal circumstances in a novel advocating compassionate euthanasia. When the book is unexpectedly enlisted by powerful political figures in support of government propaganda, Halder finds his career rising in an optimistic current of nationalism and prosperity. Seemingly inconsequential decisions lead to choices, which lead to more choices – with eventually devastating effect.
