Cinesite opens its 2012 Inspire Internship Program for entries

London, UK, January 11, 2012 – Cinesite, one of the world’s leading film visual effects houses, today announced that it’s now accepting applications for its highly successful annual internship program, Inspire. Now in its third year, a new technical effects strand has been added to Inspire, which specifically targets graduates with an interest in computer programming or technical effects. Antony Hunt, managing director, added the new placement to encourage a new-generation of skilled programmers to consider the VFX industry as a viable option for their skills, and to help budding effects artists demonstrate their technical ability.

Cinesite’s visual effects internship will run in conjunction with the technical effects internship. Both placements are six-week paid positions which will commence this summer. The technical effects strand is aimed at graduates who may have a background in computer programming or have studied computer graphics but have an interest in technical effects and programming. The visual effects internship is suited to artists with a background in computer animation or computer graphics who are interested in modeling, animation, compositing, digital matte painting and other visual effects positions.

“I’m always bowled over by the amount of submissions we receive for Inspire, and every year the quality of entries keeps getting better and better,” said Hunt. “I’m looking forward to seeing how creative the applicants will be, and unearthing a few genius programmers at the same time. Best of luck to everyone who applies.”

Previous Inspire winners have worked on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and are currently working on John Carter and World War Z. Since finishing their placements, all six winners have since secured positions at Cinesite.

Applications can be made at www.cinesite.com/internships, where application packs and further information can also be found. The deadline to submit entries is 13 April. @Cinesite on Twitter will carry updates on all Inspire developments.

KLOS Radio Personality Uncle Joe Benson Helps House Research Institute Get the Word out on Healthy Hearing to NAMM Attendees

Los Angeles – January 9, 2012 — As part of its 2012 NAMM Winter Show activities, the House Research Institute (HRI) [NAMM booth 1292, Hall E] will host special guest Uncle Joe Benson of Los Angeles’ KLOS radio on Saturday, January 21st from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Anaheim Convention Center. The popular radio announcer and entertainer will be on hand to greet booth attendees while discussing the importance of maintaining healthy hearing and hearing loss protection.

Since 1980, Uncle Joe’s voice has been heard by millions of listeners across Southern California, and his “Off The Record” music/interview program is syndicated on over 90 stations nationwide. As a radio personality on KLOS, his broadcasts reach nearly three million people across southern California.

KLOS has been serving the greater Los Angeles area for over 40 years, and has also made a positive impact through its continued community outreach efforts. The station still owns the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest blood drive in the country and was presented the Crystal Award for its exemplary community service.

“Healthy hearing is a topic that deserves much broader attention — especially within the music community,” commented Uncle Joe. “This year at NAMM, we are happy to help put the spotlight on the topic of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) to educate folks not only on how fragile our hearing is, but also on the measures we can take to protect it and preserve it.”

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is usually painless, progressive, permanent, and completely preventable. It happens when a person is exposed for too long of a time to sound pressure levels of 85 decibels or more, resulting in damage to the sensorineural (“hair”) cells of the inner ear. It can be the result of exposing your ears to a sudden, intense impulse noise like an explosion or gunfire or extended or repeated exposure to loud machinery and recreational activities, such as loud music and video.

According to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), 36 million American adults report some degree of hearing loss; an estimated 26 million of them between the ages of 20 and 69 have a high-frequency hearing loss caused by too much exposure to loud sound.

MAXON US Re-Launches Cineversity Training Website

NEWBURY PARK, Calif. — December 20, 2011 — MAXON Computer, Inc., the US subsidiary of the leading developer of professional 3D modeling, painting, animation and rendering solutions, today announced the re-launch of Cineversity, the premier online training and education resource for CINEMA 4D users. The redesigned site takes advantage of the latest web innovations to provide users with a more intuitive interface, improved search and filtering capabilities for easier access, the ability to create custom playlists, and an interface for teachers to interact with their students.

Digital artists and educators depend on the Cineversity site for tutorials that sharpen their 3D skill set as well as videos that highlight the latest CINEMA 4D features. The Cineversity website was launched in 2006 with 100 tutorials. Since then, the site has grown exponentially to nearly 2000 video tutorials, resources and learning materials created by some of the 3D industry’s most celebrated and accomplished artists. To ensure the new Cineversity site would maximize the creative potential and productivity of its user base, MAXON conducted a survey asking artists and educators what changes and features they most wanted to see on the site. Respondents will be pleased to find a majority of what they asked for in the new site.

“We’re very excited about the artist-friendly changes to Cineversity that will not only let users quickly search and filter results but also customize their CINEMA 4D training with the creation of playlists,” said Paul Babb, President/CEO, MAXON US. “We are committed to the CINEMA 4D community to provide educational material that will increase the artist’s proficiency and productivity.”

“The enhancements to Cineversity make it even more valuable for CINEMA 4D users looking for a serious training resource,” adds Dirk Beichert, Marketing Director at MAXON headquarters in Germany. “We expect many customers will make use of the video tutorials offered by our US office to enhance their skills and produce higher quality artwork.”

Highlights of the new Cineversity site include:
Searching and Filtering – Quickly and Easily Find the Tutorials You Need
The improved search and interactive filtering capabilities in Cineversity let users search for terms and further define results, making access to the content-rich site more effective. Searching is available in both the Tutorials and Playlists sections concurrently. Users can then create an RSS feed for their custom search results.

Playlists – CINEMA 4D Training, Your Way
Similar to those used for music, Cineversity now allows users to create custom playlists with selected tutorials. Artists and educators can create playlists for specific CINEMA 4D tasks or subjects and organize, categorize and manage them for enhanced learning and productivity. Playlists can be made public or shared privately with other users.

Official Cineversity Playlists
The Cineversity staff has assembled thematic playlists on a range of topics to help users maximize their CINEMA 4D training. New playlists will be added regularly.

New User Dashboard
Each user’s home page on Cineversity features a new dashboard interface that gives a quick and immediate overview of:
• New Tutorials
• New Cineversity playlists
• My Playlists: a premium member’s personal playlists
• Active Playlists: a list of all playlists a member has started to watch but not finished or bookmarked to watch later
• My Viewing History: a record of the most recent tutorials a member has watched.

Student Management Tools for Teachers
Instructors teaching a CINEMA 4D class can now manage students through their user dashboard. Teachers can communicate with all or a selection of students, assign playlists and observe each student’s tutorial viewing progress.

Cineversity Live!
The new site offers a direct link and show archive of MAXON’s bi-weekly “Cineversity Live!” webcast as well as a link to the webcast’s new availability via Podcast.

Knowledge Base
The new Cineversity now features a Wiki knowledge base where premium members can contribute to and share information relevant to CINEMA 4D users and digital artists in general.

Sharing
Members can now “share” their activities, “like” tutorials and link to content via all major social media channels including Facebook, Twitter and YouTube directly from the new Cineversity site.

About Cineversity
Cineversity is a CINEMA 4D online training and education resource from MAXON USA that is dedicated to helping creative professionals, educators and students maximize their potential. The site features nearly 2,000 tutorials on some of the industry’s most advanced 3D graphics and visual effects techniques as well as resources, a knowledge base, forums and instructional tips on MAXON software for users from beginner to award-winning artist. Cineversity is the first stop for the many respected educational facilities that rely on MAXON CINEMA 4D as a core element of their visual arts programs in graphics, animation, and design, including the Savannah College of Art and Design, Vancouver Film School, Ex’pression College for Digital Arts, Rhode Island School of Design, and Art Center College of Design.

Manhattan Edit Workshop Partners With AbelCine; Connects Production to Post

MANHATTAN EDIT WORKSHOP PARTNERS WITH ABELCINE; CONNECTS PRODUCTION TO POST
Educational developments teach filmmakers and videographers end-to-end production to post workflows and techniques

New York, New York – December 12, 2011 – Manhattan Edit Workshop (Mewshop), the cutting-edge authorized digital training destination, is pleased to announce a training partnership with industry leading film and digital media equipment supplier AbelCine. Their first collaboration, ‘Hands On: From the Camera to the Cutting Room,’ is a two-day intensive workshop in the art of shooting and editing narrative and documentary film.

“This partnership leverages the expertise of our respective training organizations to produce educational programs that approach training from the artistic workflow as opposed to teaching specific buttons and dials,” comments Josh Apter, Founder and President, Manhattan Edit Workshop. “I am very excited to get people working on all the latest tools and technology available to filmmakers, and using them for specific creative ends.”

“AbelCine Training was established to bring real-word education to industry professionals. We emphasize practical training taught by instructors who work everyday in the disciplines they teach. We are excited about the partnership with Manhattan Edit Workshop, because it allows us to offer our clients first-class instruction in editing techniques, which fits perfectly with our philosophy,” explained Andy Shipsides, AbelCine Training Department Manager and Camera Technology Specialist.

The first ‘Hands On: From the Camera to the Cutting Room’ workshop will be held on January 21st at AbelCine and January 22nd at Mewshop.

Day One takes place at AbelCine’s brand new training space. Award-winning cinematographer Peter Olsen and Mewshop founder and filmmaker Josh Apter deconstruct classic examples of three cinematic concepts – fiction, vérité and the interview – and take students through an immersive hands-on workshop in lighting, camera placement, composition and sound for these disciplines. Working with professional actors, state-of-the-art gear and award-winning instructors, the students break off into crews and shoot their own exercises.

Day Two takes place at Manhattan Edit Workshop where students take their footage through post-production using the industry’s most popular non-linear editing tools. Mewshop founder and filmmaker Josh Apter will walk through the post process where students will ingest, assemble, fine-tune and output work for a group screening and critique to end the class.

Students can register for the workshop on the Mewshop web site for 500.00 USD.

About the Instructors:
Instructor Josh Apter
After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, instructor Josh Apter attended NYU’s Graduate Film Program, where his thesis, 53rd Calypso, was honored with the Martin Scorsese Award for achievement in directing. The film, which stars Edward Norton, received numerous awards for directing, editing, and cinematography at film festivals across the country.

Josh was nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards for his first feature film, Kaaterskill Falls – The John Cassavetes Award and Best Debut Performance. Kaaterskill Falls was also awarded the Critic’s Jury Prize at the IFP/West Los Angeles Film Festival. It is currently screening on the Sundance Channel and is available on DVD through Wellspring Media.

In addition to establishing Manhattan Edit Workshop, the destination for post-production training, Josh has served as editor for more than eight feature films including The Holy Land (winner Slamdance 2002/Cavu Pictures Distributor), Kaaterskill Falls, and Barbecue is a Noun (Audience Award for Best Documentary at the Rome International Film Festival and the River Run Film Festival). Instructor Peter Olsen
After being honored as a regional finalist in the Student Academy Awards for his first 16mm film Interstates, instructor Peter Olsen was accepted into the graduate film program at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, where his work garnered several honors, including a Graduate Teaching Assistantship, a Warner Bros. Production Award, and a nomination for the American Society of Cinematographers Greg Toland Heritage Award. Peter was also awarded a $25,000 development grant from IFP/North and the Minnesota Independent Film Fund as co-writer of the feature film screenplay Ice Nine, now in development.
Peter brings an invaluable distinction to the projects he shoots since he is also a writer, producer and director. His debut feature, Kaaterskill Falls (co-directed with Josh Apter), on which he also served as director of photography, received the Critic’s Jury Prize for Best Feature at the 2001 IFP/West Los Angeles Film Festival, and was nominated for two 2002 Independent Spirit Awards. Peter is currently developing and shooting a number of feature projects both documentary and narrative.
