NAB Booth SL6310

Digital Vision has unveiled a unique, powerful, single restoration system at NAB 2012, answering the needs of content owners housing millions of hours of material stored in videotape archives. Solely targeted at the video restoration market, Phoenix Video provides broadcasters and archive owners with a highly cost-effective image restoration software solution that allows content stored on videotape to be fully restored ready for distribution across multiple platforms.

Phoenix Video is an end-to-end solution that includes Digital Vision’s leading image manipulation DVO software toolset for highly automated restoration and enhancement of video content stored on various tape formats, such as 1″, U-Matic and Betacam SP, or later transferred to digital tape formats. The system handles image defects such as drop-outs, severe noise, cross color artifacting, line sync problems (shifts/stretching) and more. Additional features include motion compensated frame rate conversion and high-quality upscaling as well as full support for common broadcast codecs.

These new video restoration tools have also been added to Digital Vision’s high-end restoration offering Phoenix Finish. The system can now restore material from analogue videotape archives up to 4K film restoration handling a combination of video and film related issues. With the new video restoration toolset included, Phoenix Finish now provides users with a unique system that fulfils all requirements regardless of acquisition format or quality of original material.

Torbjörn Dyrvold, Phoenix & DVO Product Manager says, “We are delighted to introduce this new integrated video restoration toolset at NAB. Phoenix is the only high-end restoration and mastering solution that provides both film and video restoration capabilities. The addition of the video tools enables our customers to expand their services and bring new life to valuable content stored on tape. The first user of Phoenix video will be Deluxe 142 in Soho, London who will add the system to its full range of digital restoration services.

Phoenix Video is available as a standalone product or integrated with Phoenix Finish the company’s flagship restoration system, which combines the power of film and video restoration in one system. CRASH+SUES Helps Subaru “Share the Love” In Carmichael Lynch’s Dealership Video For Automaker’s Annual Charitable Giving Event

CRASH+SUES Helps Subaru “Share the Love” In Carmichael Lynch’s
Dealership Video For Automaker’s Annual Charitable Giving Event

Minneapolis, MN: Once again CRASH+SUES editor Carrie Shanahan has teamed with Carmichael Lynch/Minneapolis to cut a dealership video heralding Subaru’s annual “Share the Love” charity event. The two and a half minute short, which is displayed at Subaru dealerships nationwide, promotes the automaker’s 2011 end-of-the-year initiative, which donates $250 to one of five participating charities for each new Subaru purchased during the run of the event.

Subaru has raised $15 million from its past “Share the Love” campaigns; the automaker hopes to donate $5 million more this year to benefit American Forests, the ASPCA, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Meals On Wheels Association of America, and the Special Olympics.

“It’s been an honor to cut this video for Carmichael Lynch for the past four years,” says Shanahan. “It’s always great to work on projects that highlight the charitable side of advertising and deliver such a positive message. ‘Share the Love’ inspired me to sign up as a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels with my little boy.”

The dealership video includes clips from the “Share the Love” broadcast spot, which spotlights Subaru owners wearing philanthropic T-shirts: a surfer clad in a “I Stand By My Manatee” top, a busy young woman claiming that “I’m greener than this [very green] shirt.” The voiceover explains how Subaru was inspired by its customers to create the “Share the Love” event four years ago as vignettes illustrate the good works of this

year’s five participating charities: tree planting by American Forests; a legacy of helping cats and dogs by the ASPCA; granting wishes to seriously ill children by the Make-A-Wish Foundation; volunteers at work for Meals on Wheels; and athletes competing in the Special Olympics.

The video ends with an animated “Share the Love” tag and a clip of the surfer and her Subaru wagon on a beach as animated type spells out “L-O-V-E.”

Shanahan integrated footage from Subaru’s “Share the Love” broadcast spot with clips provided from the five participating charities. “Having cut these videos for the last three years, I’m familiar with the content and mood,” she says. “It’s always a pleasure working with Carmichael Lynch whose creative teams and producers are some of the best in the business.”

SUE employed Digital Vision’s Nucoda Film Master to color correct the video and enhance the supplied video from the charities to give a consistent look to all of the footage.

AC-ET Enjoys Successful Green Hippo & PixelRange Open Days

A.C. Entertainment Technologies (AC-ET) Ltd. enjoyed a busy turnout to its recent ‘Video and Lighting Convergence’ UK open days, which showcased the latest products and innovations available from Green Hippo and PixelRange.

Staged at both AC-ET’s southern HQ in High Wycombe and northern office in Leeds, a good mix of people from many different industry sectors took up the opportunity to visit – including schools and educational establishments, theatres, venues, individuals working in broadcast and a cross-section of freelancers.

In a fast-moving industry constantly demanding quicker and more flexible control of multiple video sources and playback surfaces, the events emphasised the on-going creative and technical fusion between lighting, LED sources, ‘pixels’ and video technologies as a complete visual environment.

Attendees were able to delve deeper into the award-winning Hippotizer range of Green Hippo media servers. Product demos highlighted inventive new features of the latest v3 software like UberPan, for the control of multiple Hippotizer media servers as a single canvas, and VideoMapper, to fit and shape content across different scenic surfaces.

Visitors had the chance to discover why PixelRange are one of the industry’s most innovative providers of LED lighting solutions, with demos of the SmartLine versatile and powerful battens range, the QPar high output Par fixture and PixelSmart Par, which combines a vast colour palette with warm white LEDs for a brilliantly bright white.

To showcase today’s seamless convergence of lighting and visual elements, Green Hippo Hippotizer media server content was ‘pixelmapped’ onto the PixelRange SmartLine battens.

The format consisted of two sessions – morning and afternoon – separated by lunch and refreshments throughout the day. This casual format provided an ideal networking opportunity for guests to meet and discuss ideas with each other, as well as representatives from AC-ET, Green Hippo and PixelRange.

“Everyone was really impressed with the open days” reports A.C. Video’s Peter Butler. “The attendees really appreciated the chance to get hands-on with the products, and took the opportunity to discuss any inquiries directly with the manufacturers and AC-ET.”

Tom Warden from Milton Keynes based Impact Production Services comments that the events were “really useful”. He took the opportunity to quiz the Green Hippo representatives about the full product range, and take a close look at PixelRange’s newest LED technologies.

Eddie Stephens from the BBC comments on how “interesting and useful” the day was, adding that there was “a very pleasant lunch”.

AC-ET is the exclusive UK and Ireland distributor for Green Hippo and master European distributor for PixelRange.

Please visit the AC-ET website and Facebook pages for more information on future events.

ANTON/BAUER HELPS THE OUTDOORSMAN TAME THE WILD WITH CONSISTENT BATTERY PERFORMANCE

SHELTON, CT, MARCH 8, 2012—For more than 20 years, Anton/Bauer®, part of Vitec Videocom, a Vitec Group company, and a premier global provider of batteries, chargers, lighting and other mobile power systems for the professional broadcast, video and film industries, has crisscrossed the globe with Buck McNeely, host and producer of the outdoor adventure television series The Outdoorsman with Buck McNeely. From the frozen wilderness of Siberian Russia to the steamy jungles of Africa and many points in between, Anton/Bauer designs its products to deliver consistently reliable performance even in the most challenging shooting environments. Perfect for McNeely and his crew, Anton/Bauer batteries power the thrilling video that has propelled the exciting series to become the largest syndicated outdoor adventure program in the world. The crew’s recent two-week, on-location filming of an African safari is the latest example of Anton/Bauer batteries’ ability to ensure the show goes on, even in the most extreme environments.

McNeely and his crew traveled to Africa to film a safari storyline about a father and son documenting African wild life. The crew filmed stock footage of a virtual menagerie of animals in their natural habitats, including elephants, rhinoceros, baboons and Cape buffalo.

“In extreme climatic conditions, from deserts to the frozen wastes of the Arctic, and mountains to swamplands, we’ve found that Anton/Bauer products hold up,” says McNeely, founder, Outdoorsman International and producer of The Outdoorsman with Buck McNeely. “They perform very well, even in the chaotic filming environment of chasing wild animals as they leap and bound across the African plains. We also like the longevity of the Anton/Bauer batteries, because when we’re shooting, it’s usually from dawn to dusk. Additionally, the batteries are very portable, which enhances our ability to get into remote locations and shoot great footage.”

Currently, The Outdoorsman crew is relying heavily on DIONIC® 90 and DIONIC HCX batteries. Also in the crew’s arsenal are two CINE VCLX batteries, which are used during production with monitors, lights and wireless receivers. McNeely was drawn to Anton/Bauer almost two decades ago, when he found himself in the snow of the Rocky Mountains with a dying battery right before a crucial shot. At that moment, McNeely knew he needed a more reliable and durable power source. Today, he carries six to eight Anton/Bauer batteries when his crew goes on location and uses four batteries on average per day.

The DIONIC 90 was designed by Anton/Bauer to deliver consistently reliable performance even in the most challenging shooting environments on Earth. It offers a RealTime® display that continually updates the operator on how much run time remains and on the state of the current charge. Weighing only 1.7 pounds, the DIONIC 90 can be transported without restriction under the IATA and DOT safety regulations (http://www.antonbauer.com/Support/TransportationInformation). The 95 Wh battery can handle a maximum load of six amps, and offers run times ranging from six hours at 15 watts to 1.75 hours at 50 watts.

The DIONIC HCX offers 124 Wh battery capacity and a unique motion detection sensor, which puts the battery to “sleep” after a two-day period without a power draw. This feature significantly reduces self-discharge and provides extended storage and battery life with nearly zero capacity loss. To “awaken” the battery, customers need only move or attach it to a device. When airplane travel is required, DIONIC HCX users can carry on up to two batteries per person per flight.*

While in Africa, a region where unusually high power surges are typical, The Outdoorsman with Buck McNeely crew experienced severe issues with power spikes. In one incident, an extremely high power surge caused a spike to break through a surge protector and incapacitated a charger. McNeely located the nearest Anton/Bauer dealer, who immediately provided a contact for assistance. After having the charger fixed, another power spike completely incapacitated the charger, necessitating the need for a replacement charger. The Anton/Bauer dealer came through again, providing a loaner to ensure that production would not be halted in any way.

“Anton/Bauer means reliability. From its dealers to customer service to the folks at the corporate office, Anton/Bauer comes through every time,” says McNeely. “The Anton/Bauer team helped us to overcome our challenges and put on a great production…in fact, we may even have enough footage for half a dozen new episodes based on the content we shot in Africa. If not for Anton/Bauer, this excursion would not have been nearly as successful.”
