Qube Cinema Brings Uncompressed 4K Projection to NAB

With Qube’s new Quad 3G interface, users can switch seamlessly between uncompressed 4K and 4K DCP playback.

Delivering Full 4K Review Capabilities to Postproduction with Quad 3G

NAB 2012, April 16-19, Booth SL7708

Las Vegas, NV: April 13, 2012… Qube Cinema, a world leader in 4K digital cinema technologies, will introduce the new Quad 3G interface for digital cinema projectors at the NAB Show next week in Las Vegas. The Quad 3G interface allows for integrated postproduction and digital cinema mastering workflows. Facilities can use one projector setup for both HD-4K uncompressed color grading and 2K-4K digital cinema playback providing a comprehensive review and quality control solution from one system.

At NAB, Qube Cinema will demonstrate the new Qube Xi 4K Integrated Media Block (IMB) installed in a Barco DP4K-32B projector. The new postproduction version of the Qube IMB features a Quad 3G interface with four BNC connectors that can be connected to color grading or finishing systems in order to stream uncompressed 4K digital content directly to the projector. The Qube XP-I D-cinema server offers a data throughput of up to 1,000 Mbps, sufficient for 4K dual-projector 3D playback from a single server, and the Qube Xi can support High Frame Rate playback and DCPs up to 500Mbps. Internal synchronization of the IMB allows for multiple-projector setups, for example, for stereo 3D playback or for venue entertainment projection. With the Quad 3G interface, users can switch seamlessly between uncompressed 4K and 4K DCP playback.

“As the development of 4K cinema continues to gain traction, the industry is going to need transitional tools,” said Michael Cioni, founder of Light Iron Digital, a postproduction facility in Los Angeles. “The Qube Cinema Quad 3G is the perfect example of a small but powerful solution that will help facilities offer filmmakers a simple pathway to 4K monitoring while making use of other 4K components that are readily available.”

“Rather than having to switch input boards, which can take hours to complete, facilities can now use one system for review and playback of all their 4K content,” said Rajesh Ramachandran, CTO of Qube Cinema. “This is a key piece of the new 4K pipelines that post houses are now hurrying to implement.”

Rather than requiring eight separate HD-SDI links to get 4K uncompressed playback, the Qube 3G interface uses four 3G-SDI cables, further simplifying 4K setups for post houses.
“As an industry leader in DCP mastering, Qube understands the importance of ensuring that digital cinema is brought to the screen in a way that reflects the vision of the director and the hard work of the cinematographer and colorist,” explained Ramachandran. “It’s about making sure everything looks the way it was intended to look. The Quad 3G makes that much easier to achieve.”

Visitors to NAB can see the new Qube technology first-hand at booth SL7708 in the Lower South Hall.

HARMAN’s Studer Announces Integration of EMBER Protocol with Studer(r) Vista Consoles at NAB 2012

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – At NAB this year, HARMAN’s Studer will show how efficiently it can control newsroom playout or production automation systems with its full range of broadcast consoles, demonstrating the expanded integration of the Ember protocol into Studer Vista consoles at booth C2619 in addition to the existing inclusion in Studer’s OnAir range of consoles.

The Ember protocol provides seamless integration of Studer Vista and OnAir series consoles with 3rd-party broadcast control systems & newsroom production automation systems. Such a workflow enables broadcasters to add and expand newscasting without adding overheads in newsroom operations, and improves workflow and newsgathering ability while retaining the ability to go to manual override for breaking news.

“Supporting the networking and routing needs of broadcasters is nothing new for us at Studer,” said Katy Templeman-Holmes, Marketing Manager for Studer in the USA. “Some of the world’s largest broadcasters have trusted Studer for over a decade to manage the integrity of their network operations with the Route 3000, Route 6000, Pro-Bel and now we will further support broadcasters’ needs with the integration of Ember.”

Ember is a control protocol implementation that allows many audio console settings to be controlled over TCP/IP, in addition to the Pro-Bel SW-P-08 protocol that is supported already. An additional bonus to broadcast is Ember’s ability to support multi-connection setups, making it an excellent choice for installations requiring redundancy.
Ember connectivity allows the external equipment to transfer signal labels, and to control input channel gains, solo, mutes, plus AUX send levels and mutes, along with N-X (mix-minus) bus levels and mutes. Master channel levels and mutes can also be addressed along with Group and Aux master channels.

EMBER control is available across the range of Studer consoles, including the new compact OnAir 1500 console, so it can be used from large-scale public broadcast situations to small local stations according to budget.

EMBER will be shown with the Vista 5 series of consoles on the HARMAN Studer booth C2619 at the NAB show, in addition to the showcase of Studer’s five other new products being launched at the show. The new Vista 1 Compact will also support EMBER, in turn presenting a robust all-in-one solution for broadcasters looking to cost-effectively consolidate their studio operations.

Archion Introduces Synergy IS Expansion Storage for Avid ISIS 5000

– Compelling Expansion Engine Builds on Archion’s Proven Success
of Providing Only True Expansion Option for Avid Shared Storage Users –

Burbank, CA (April 12, 2012) – Once again listening and responding to customer needs for reliable, powerful and more cost-effective expansion storage options for their Avid storage systems, Archion Technologies has introduced Synergy IS for the Avid ISIS 5000. The only alternative RAID protected add-on storage for the ISIS 5000, Archion’s Synergy IS with its patent pending technologies offers seamless, plug-and-play integration into ISIS 5000 shared storage systems. Since its introduction in 2010, ISIS 5000 has been recognized as a powerful component of Avid workflows. However, like the Unity MediaNetwork, Avid only offers expensive expansion options that can put undue pressure on budgets when it comes to adding expansion storage. Archion’s Synergy IS is the long-awaited storage option for Avid’s ISIS 5000.

“Since the successful introduction and widespread adoption of our Synergy system for the Avid Unity MediaNetwork, clients that use ISIS 5000 have been consistently requesting a solution from us that avoids that expensive upgrade path,” said Reuben Lima, Chief Operating Officer of Archion. “Today, we are pleased to announce we have once again responded to our clients’ demands with the introduction of Synergy IS, which offers a powerful expansion engine for the ISIS 5000 with a price that starts at a very attractive $22,995.”

During the last five years, an increasing number of post production and broadcast facilities across the country have come to rely on Archion’s solutions for future and past shared storage technology releases from Avid. In effect, Archion has positioned itself as the first choice in storage hardware for Avid users. They have become comfortable knowing that they can utilize Archion’s proven technology for years, while expanding with ease as their storage requirements continue to grow.

“Synergy IS is just another example of the flexibility of our patent pending innovative technologies to adapt to and bond with existing storage systems,” said James Tucci, Chief Technology Officer of Archion. “This technology allows us to provide faster, compatible and more reliable expansion storage for Avid and other content creation systems, with an unbeatable cost/benefit ratio.”

Patent Pending and Advanced Storage Technologies
Archion engineers originally developed the award winning and patent pending Vdisk™ in 2006 to enable plug-and-play integration of hardware parity RAID into Avid Unity MediaNetworks. Later, this innovative technology was expanded and enhanced to create greater compatibility among applications in creative and collaborative environments. Now, Archion’s more innovative technologies are being leveraged to deliver a completely compatible and seamless integration with Avid’s ISIS 5000 shared storage platform. Incredibly, ISIS 5000 owners can save nearly 50% when adding Synergy IS storage rather than Avid storage.

Synergy IS is as transparent to ISIS 5000 as Archion’s Synergy XTR is to Unity. The 3RU chassis is a direct replacement for the ISIS 5000 engine and offers all of the protection of the Archion standard RAID 5 4+1 configuration, which Avid adopted for use in ISIS 5000. Synergy IS cannot become or be used as a system director or failover system director. It is strictly designed as additional storage for ISIS 5000, connecting via 10gigE to the Force10 switch and the ISIS 5000 system director. Binding is done as with any ISIS engine, and storage groups and workspaces can then be created.

Technical specifications:
• Storage size: 16 and 32TB
• Protection: RAID 5 Three 4+1 with hot spare
• Connectivity: 10gigE for ISIS, gigE for management
• Physical size: 3RU (29” x 19”)
• Power: 2+1 power supplies 650W

The Synergy IS will begin shipping Q3.

Optical Devices Division of FUJIFILM to Introduce Long HD Field Lens with Attractive Price Point at NAB 2012

XA77x9.5 features OS-TECH image stabilization, FIND diagnostic system, 16-bit encoding, dust-proof and anti-fogging technology, macro shooting, and remote control

Wayne, N.J., April 11, 2012 – FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division announced that it will introduce the XA77x9.5 HDTV field lens during the NAB 2012 convention, which runs from April 14th-19th in the Las Vegas Convention Center (Booth #C7525). The XA77x9.5 is well suited for use within mobile trucks, at stadiums, sporting events, arenas, larger houses of worship – anywhere a long lens would be beneficial in capturing detail and close up images from far distances.

“This is a lens that makes high-quality, long-distance shooting possible for a much wider range of customers,” said Thom Calabro, Director, Marketing and Product Development, FUJIFILM North America Corporation, Optical Devices Division. “And it comes standard with several key features that ensure rock solid performance.”

Among them, the XA77x9.5 features the company’s patented OS TECH image stabilization. OS-TECH contains sensors that detect the slightest movement caused by vibration. A correction signal is applied to the optical system, which helps to maintain a stable image when shooting from an unstable platform, or in windy conditions.

The lens’ advanced diagnostic FIND (Focused Intelligent Network Diagnosis) system aids in preventative maintenance and troubleshooting by evaluating lens electronic and mechanical parameters.

The XA77x9.5 also incorporates FUJINON’s dustproof and anti-fogging technology. All FUJINON field lenses have a fixed front element that reduces dust contamination and serves as a protection for the front focus group. A concealed compartment that contains a drying agent reduces fogging in internal lens components due to humidity. All of this helps in maintaining long-term reliability and performance.

And 16-bit optical encoding output provides high positioning accuracy in virtual environments. An advanced back focus system on the XA77x9.5 allows macro shooting from as close as 2.7m from the subject. With an optional controller, the advanced back focus provides enhanced production features. Of course, this HD field lens is compatible with all existing FUJINON EFP controllers, and full remote control via RS-232 is standard.

HARMAN’s Studer Shows Axia Livewire™ AoIP Card Development at NAB 2012

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – HARMAN’S Studer is showing its commitment to integration of the Livewire AoIP standard at NAB with the first showing of the D21m interface card that may be used on Vista and OnAir console systems.

Livewire is the broadcast networking system that utilizes Ethernet to provide an easy way to route and share audio and logic throughout the broadcast plant. Under the Livewire Limitless License (L3) introduced this year, Studer is licensed to build a Livewire interface into any or all of its products, allowing instant one-cable connection to Axia networks and products from more than 30 other Livewire hardware and software partners.

“We decided to adopt the Livewire standard from Axia following consultation with many customers on our new product strategy,” said Andy Trott, HARMAN’s Vice President and General Manager of Mixers, Microphones and Headphones (Soundcraft, Studer and AKG). “Studer is embracing a very ‘open standards’ philosophy as we launch more and more broadcast systems and this is the first of many new partnership initiatives that we will be announcing over the next 18 months to provide our customers with increasing flexibility.”

“Axia clients realize that the value of the network isn’t the network itself-it’s the variety of devices the network can connect to,” says Axia President Michael “Catfish” Dosch. “The addition of Studer products to the already-impressive list of broadcast equipment that connects to Livewire underscores just how strongly broadcasters value standards-based networking.”

Other new products from Studer at NAB include the new Studer Vista 1 Compact mixing console, Vista Compact Remote bay, VISTA FX Lexicon engine, RTW TM7 Metering Option for Vista consoles, and integral EMBER control protocol for Vista systems.

HARMAN (www.harman.com) designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of audio and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer and professional markets – supported by 15 leading brands, including AKG, Harman Kardon, Infinity, JBL, Lexicon and Mark Levinson.
