Robert Juliat Aledin LED Profile Spots Solve Power Needs of Silverdale Baptist Church

Silverdale Baptist Church

Silverdale Baptist Church

ankin Media Systems Inc. (MMS) of Franklin, Tennessee helped Chattanooga’s Silverdale Baptist Church find a cost-effective lighting solution for the renovation of existing space into a 2,000-seat auditorium, which includes integration of 15 Aledin 85-watt LED profile spots from Robert Juliat.

Initially, the church planned a new auditorium, but when funding shortfalls required significant budget cutbacks MMS was tasked with figuring out how to retrofit its lighting design into a room that could be renovated. MMS worked with structural engineers to design a catwalk to add lighting capabilities to the preexisting space while lowering the ceiling for a more intimate feel. The main challenge remained, however: a limit on the electrical supply to the facility since the cost of increasing power capacity to the room would be enormous. Power consumption therefore became a major consideration.

The solution that MMS engineered was to specify LEDs for house and performance lighting since LEDs required significantly less power and offered a longer lifespan than conventional fixtures.

Specifically, MMS chose 10 Robert Juliat Aledin 634SX-CW, three Aledin 631SX-CW and two Aledin 633SX-CW LED profile spots for the renovated space. “We selected Robert Juliat because they offered the only fixtures on the market that met our price point, had all the features we wanted – including moving shutters – and delivered the brightness we needed,” says MMS project manager Stephen Roberts.

Robert Juliat’s Aledin LED profile spots were the first products of their type to achieve significant output and framing/projection ability from an extremely low-powered LED source. They are ideal choices for environments with limited power supplies.

Having met the low power consumption and pricing needs of Silverdale Baptist Church the Aledins are now making their mark in terms of performance.

“The client is very happy,” Roberts reports. “The lights are working great. The church has had to do no maintenance on them, and although they move them around a lot they always perform just fine.”

ev1.tv Delivers News, Live Sports Coverage with Broadcast Pix

Billerica, Massachusetts – Broadcast Pix™ today announced that ev1.tv, a local TV station covering the Emsland and Grafschaft Bentheim district in Lower Saxony, Germany, is using a Granite™ 5000 Video Control Center in the control room of its brand-new studio and a Slate™ 1000 Video Control Center in its OB van. Primarily, the station uses its systems to produce a daily newscast and talk show in the studio, while the production van is used to cover football games.

“In fact, everything you see on ev1.tv is produced with Granite or Slate,” said Nico Stähle, chief engineer for ev1.tv, which distributes its programming via cable and online. The new Broadcast Pix systems were purchased last summer through Studio Hamburg Media Consult International (MCI), which handled the Granite installation (Stähle installed the Slate in the production van).

Stähle said he chose Granite because he needed a 2 M/E mixer that was easy to operate. “For us, there’s no other bundle of hardware with the cost effectiveness of Granite or Slate,” he explained. “We can operate all components from the panel with no need for other external equipment. Plus, Granite fits perfectly in our workflow with our Final Cut Pro workstations.”

ev1.tv uses a number of Fluent™ built-in workflow tools in both systems, including the animation store and Harris CG to create animated lower-thirds. Fluent-View is used to display all sources and keys on a 52-inch LCD monitor in the control room, and Stähle appreciates the “attention to detail,” such as the integrated clock in the display.

“We do a lot with Fluent Macros,” Stähle added. “For example, for the open of our news show, the intro starts and automatically fades to the camera in the studio, the lower-third appears, fades away, and cuts to another camera. We also use a macro for the end of the show to display a crawl and other titles on an animated background.”

Programming is currently produced in SD, but Stähle noted there is no problem upgrading to HD or a mixed HD/SD production environment with Granite. With several months of productions complete, he said the Broadcast Pix systems have performed very well. “No problems at all,” Stähle said. “It is so easy to operate that, with the help of some macros, even our trainees can run a news show.”

Clay Paky Sharpys and grandMA Help Give Dynamic Look to NBA All-Star Game Halftime Show

NBA All-Star Game Halftime Show

NBA All-Star Game Halftime Show

Pro sports leagues and their fans demand spectacular halftime shows these days, and the NBA All-Star Game Halftime Show on February 26 was no exception. Lighting designer Otis Howard got some assistance from the grandMA and 30 Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures, which lent their unique look to high-octane performances by Pitbull, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo and Nicki Minaj.

“When you go into a show like this you need to appeal to the NBA, the client and the artists,” says Howard of Otis Howard Design in St. Petersberg, Florida. “They wanted a dynamic halftime show – something on a par with the NFL. There’s always the challenge of making a show like this look big, and the 2012 show was the biggest they’d ever done. We had to come up with a lot of bells and whistles.”

Howard had seen Sharpys in action and was looking for an opportunity to use them. “They seemed like the right tool for the application: The unit was dynamic, and we needed something low profile that was small and fast. Sharpys are as fast as a mirrored head – that’s quite an innovation.”

Mixed in with lasers and a large lighting complement the Sharpys really stood out, Howard reports. “They delivered a lot of bang for the buck. We had 20 on stage and created a lot of different looks with them, including grouping them in clusters to create a helix like you get with helicopter blades. We put the additional 10 fixtures under a four-foot high plexiglass disk that was rolled out for Ne-yo. Nothing else moves that quickly.”

Howard says, “I can’t use the word ‘dynamic’ enough to describe Sharpys. They’re so low profile but have this amazing output – it’s crazy!”

A grandMA console was used to control the lighting instruments. Howard teamed with programmer Mark Butts on the show, calling him “a great collaborator.”

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, adds, “We’re proud that our Sharpys are involed in such a high profile project. Mr. Howard is a great designer and it shows in the projects he works on. We’re glad to be able to help with our innovations.”

CHRISTIE SPYDER X20 VIDEO PROCESSORS PLAY A KEY ROLE AT SAS WORLDWIDE HEADQUARTERS

SAS

SAS

SAS installed four Christie Spyder X20 video processors at its worldwide headquarters in Cary, North Carolina. Two manage and control the content displayed on the Christie(r) MicroTiles(r) walls while the other two manage and control the content on auditorium screens.

SAS, the largest independent vendor in the business intelligence market, provides business analytics, data management and IT management software and services to the financial services, government, retail, energy, life sciences, manufacturing and numerous other industries.

Morrisville, North Carolina-based Thorburn Associates Inc., an international acoustics, technology and lighting design firm, worked closely with SAS to determine the company’s needs and recommended the optimum solution. Derek Meares, associate principal at Thorburn Associates and the project’s lead designer, says the Christie Spyder X20 software played a key role in the product’s selection.

“It had the functionality we were looking for: It was easy to manipulate, set up looks, and change them in an automated fashion. This was especially important in the auditoriums where SAS takes its “on-the-road events” in-house – the events are very interactive and they often need to make changes on the fly. Although the content of the MicroTiles walls is more stable, SAS needed the ability to change those looks, too.”

Two Christie Spyder X20 video processors are dedicated to SAS’s two auditoriums. Both spaces feature two rear-projected Christie HD10K-M projectors with a Christie Spyder blending content on 28-foot by 10-foot screens. Two Christie HD6K-M projectors in each auditorium display content for two smaller, flanking screens.

Christie Spyder Manages and Controls Content on Five Christie MicroTiles Walls

A 4 units wide by 2 units high Christie MicroTiles configuration greets visitors as soon as they enter the building and the new SAS headquarters is platinum LEED certified for its green sensibilities. A second 5 units wide by 4 units high MicroTiles wall is nearby in the lobby.

The standout display is a 40-foot long Welcome Wall, in a 28 units wide by 4 units high configuration, which acts as the backdrop for the registration area. The lobby’s 12 units wide by 3 units high Future Wall displays current and upcoming events. In the executive wing on the sixth floor, the fifth MicroTiles wall, measuring 7 units wide by 3 units high, displays computer models, cable television content and digital signage; content from the auditoriums and meeting rooms can also be sent to this Executive Wall.

SAS can transform the lobby into a technology showcase and use the Welcome Wall, in conjunction with the Christie Spyder X20 video processors, to display themed backgrounds and logos for the conference registration areas. Each Christie MicroTiles wall can be repurposed several different ways just by changing the content fed to it by Christie Spyder.

“From my perspective, design support was really critical to this installation,” adds Meares. “We got excellent design support from Vista throughout the process.”

At Thorburn Associates, David Covington was the project designer for the installation. Integrator AVI-SPL installed the Christie MicroTiles at SAS after gaining expertise with the technology from several other large installations.
