HARMAN’s Studer Introduces Radically Lower-Priced Vista 1 Compact Console at NAB 2012

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Spearheading an amazing lineup of no less than six new products from HARMAN’s Studer at NAB is the Studer(r) Vista 1 Compact, a true Studer Vista console in a compact and low-cost configuration that will surprise many engineers. The new desk comes complete as a single chassis, with control surface, I/O connections and DSP all integral, considerably reducing weight and footprint.

The new desk is highly suited to both fixed and portable systems, such as newsrooms and game shows, while its compact size makes it a natural choice for OB and ENG vans, with a price under $80,000.

The Vista 1 is based largely on the Vista 5, so existing Vista users will be immediately familiar with all the functionality of the Vistonics(tm) user interface and Studer Vista control surface, plus features such as true broadcast monitoring, talkback, red light control, GPIO, N-x (Mix Minus) busses, snapshot automation and DAW control.

With an integral DSP engine of 96 channels, the Vista 1 can handle mono, stereo and 5.1 inputs with ease, and is provided with 32 mic/line inputs, 16 line outputs and eight stereo AES inputs and outputs on rear panel connections. Both 32-fader and 22-fader models are available.

I/O can be expanded using the standard Studer D21m card slot on the rear, to allow MADI, AES, AoIP, ADAT, TDIF, CobraNet, Dolby E/Digital, SDI connections etc. A MADI link can connect to any of the Studer Stagebox range for XLR connectivity as well as other formats.

New to the Vista family on the Vista 1 is an integral jingle player, played from audio files on a USB jingle stick (such as station ID or background FX), and triggered by a series of eight dedicated keys in the master section.

The Studer Vista 1 also features a redundant PSU for peace of mind, and RELINK integration with other Studer Vista and OnAir consoles means the Vista 1 can easily share signals across an entire console network.

Other new products from Studer at NAB include a new Vista Compact remote bay, Lexicon FX engine, RTW MT7 Metering Option for Vista consoles, EMBER broadcast/news automation control protocol and a Livewire AoIP card for the D21m system.

Gold Sharpys From Clay Paky Shine at Academy Awards

Gold was everywhere at the 84th Academy Awards ceremony last month in Hollywood: Gold glitzed from the red carpet, gold Oscars were handed out to lucky winners and gold Sharpy lighting fixtures from Clay Paky helped illuminate the telecast for millions of viewers around the world. A.C.T Lighting is the North American distributor for Clay Paky.

Lighting designer Bob Dickinson specified 12 Clay Paky Sharpys to add pop to the show. The powerful yet compact lights were supplied in a newly available gold housing, which blended seamlessly with the décor and set design of the auditorium. Dickinson is known as the go-to lighting designer for major international events, including previous Oscar, Emmy and Grammy Awards shows, the opening and closing ceremonies at the Vancouver Winter Olympics and events at Expo 2010 Shanghai China.

Sharpy is a 189W moving head with an unprecedented brightness usually achievable only with far greater wattages. Tipping the scales at just 16 kg, Sharpy produces a perfectly parallel, laser-like beam with an incredible output of 5,100 footcandles at 65 feet. It is also groundbreaking in the purity of its beam, which is sharply defined and free of any halo or discoloration around the edges. It offers an interchangeable color wheel with 14 fixed colors and an interchangeable gobo wheel with 17 fixed gobos, allowing users to change the shape of the beam and create an array of spectacular mid-air effects.

The complement of gold Sharpys for the ceremony was supplied by VER. A.C.T Lighting President and CEO Bob Gordon commented, “Having Bob Dickinson specify these fixtures is an honor. He is such a consummate professional that his choice of the Sharpy says so much about the fixture. Susan Tesh at VER was integral in this process and we certainly owe her our gratitude.”

Francesco Romagnoli, Clay Paky Area Manager for North and Latin America, adds, “We’re thrilled to see our new gold Sharpys at such high profile event. They really helped make the awards ceremony shine.”

Thinklogical Expands Video & KVM Routing to Address Small to Medium-Sized Computing Environments

Compact, 6.22 Gbps and Protocol Agnostic MX48 Video and KVM Router Will Be Showcased at NAB 2012; Already Shipping to Customers

Milford, CT — Thinklogical today announced that it is expanding its video and KVM routing solution with its new MX48 router. The new router allows for flexible deployment configurations in a variety of small to medium sized computing environments such as regional or local broadcast facilities, smaller post-production facilities, smaller command and control centers, corporate conference rooms and hospital or higher education presentation rooms. The MX48 will be showcased at NAB 2012 (booth SL10424). The new router is already shipping to customers.

The MX48 is a compact, high bandwidth (6.22 Gbps, the highest single thread bandwidth in the industry) and high performance solution for complete, end-to-end routing of video and peripheral signals over multi-mode or single-mode fiber optic cable. The protocol agnostic router supports a variety of formats, including DVI, Dual-link DVI, 3G, HD, SD SDI, Dual-link SDI, USB HID, USB 2.0 (high speed, full 480 Mbps), FireWire 800, serial and bi-directional audio. The router is scalable from 16 ports up to 48 ports, and is compatible with all Thinklogical KVM and video extension systems.

“Thinklogical has a robust history of delivering industry best solutions for KVM and video routing, delivering the highest levels of performance and security, in large and very large, complex computing environments. We are delighted to now bring our unique technologies to customers in small to medium sized computing environments,” said Joe Pajer, chief executive officer of Thinklogical. “With the introduction of the MX48, we are significantly expanding the number of customers who will benefit from Thinklogical solutions.”

The MX48 router is also designed to be easily configured and controlled immediately upon installation. It is engineered with a range of innovative control features designed to simplify operation in visualization computing environments, including a convenient touch panel display with an intuitive user interface. The touch panel can be either integrated into the product (accessible from the front of the router) or be positioned separately in a rack mount format. For customers who prefer to make connections right from their desktop, there is also an option for a small desktop touch panel. For larger configurations Thinklogical’s X4 Configurator, an advanced control management software program is also available, which provides a convenient, browser-based user interface to the router from remote locations. In addition, it is compatible with third party control systems.

“With the MX48, customers with small to medium sized computing environments can now take advantage of premium features and functions from Thinklogical. For instance, one of Thinklogical’s key technologies, which is included in the MX 48, is a unique, pluggable, Small Form Factor Pluggable (SFP) transceiver design which allows our customers to build an optimized system by mixing electrical SDI, NTSC/PAL, or HDMI/DVI without experiencing video scaling artifacts. Together with 6.22 Gbps of bandwidth per fiber, customers will have an ideal routing solution,” said Kevin Keefe, vice president and co-founder of Thinklogical. “Our customers continue to entrust their infrastructures to Thinklogical’s video and KVM routing solutions because our technology continues to grow and expand with their needs.”

Dalet Broadens Integration Options with NLEs

Dalet Xtend is fully integrated with the Dalet MAM platform. Genealogy metadata linking the editor’s material to the original sources can be preserved and content is better referenced throughout.

Dalet Xtend module now provides seamless media and metadata exchanges between Dalet MAM platform and Avid NLEs, Adobe Premiere and Apple Final Cut Pro

Paris, France – April 9, 2012Dalet Digital Media Systems today announced more flexible and comprehensive integration support with several non-linear editing platforms. The Dalet Xtend module, originally created to facilitate a more fluid workflow between the Dalet Media Asset Management platform and Apple Final Cut Pro® systems, is being expanded to include similar media and metadata exchange capabilities with Avid Media Composer®, Avid NewsCutter®, Adobe® Premiere®, and other NLEs. This interoperability significantly increases productivity and collaboration for editing workgroups. Dalet Xtend for Avid will be demonstrated at NAB 2012 on the Dalet Stand (SL4615). Dalet Xtend for Adobe Premiere will be available later this year.

“Dalet Xtend makes the production workflow much more seamless in every scenario, whether it is for new production, program prep or sports. Designed originally for integrating with Final Cut Pro, Dalet Xtend has gotten excellent feedback from customers and we are pleased to make similar functionality available with other industry standard NLEs,” says Raoul Cospen, Director of Marketing, Dalet. “It relies on open development technology and allows editors working on NLEs to be tightly integrated into the overall production workflow rather than functioning in operational silos. Dalet Xtend also gives customers the flexibility to assemble their preferences for best-of-breed choices for production tools with the assurance that they can change their preferences in the future.”

With Dalet Xtend editors have access to media (videos, EDLS, shot selections, etc) and metadata that are stored in the Dalet content catalogue directly from their NLE workstations. From their Dalet workstations, prep-editors have access to incoming feeds while they are being recorded, and they have access to powerful search tools to find relevant material in the archive. They also have a rich set of prep-editing tools available from the same application that cover many pre-production tasks such as clip selection, storyboarding and even voice over recording. Clips, EDLs and videos are directly accessible from 3rd party NLEs, where more complex editing can be done. The finished work can then be exported back to Dalet as a new title, or saved against a placeholder – all with the appropriate metadata entries as the exchange process is not destructive to the metadata. Crucial information such as descriptive locators and usage rights flow back and forth and are tracked by the Dalet content catalogue thanks to intelligent genealogy.

The Dalet MAM engine expertly controls the metadata and media processes. Genealogy metadata linking the editor’s material to the original sources can be preserved and content is better referenced throughout, making searches of the content catalogue and archives more efficient; content is more readily accessible to everyone who needs it. Dalet Xtend can significantly reduce expensive in-suite production time, streamline the workflow and improve media management.

HARMAN Appoints Paul Shorter to Technical Services Manager for Soundcraft, Studer and AKG

NORTHRIDGE, California – HARMAN has appointed Paul Shorter to the position of Technical Services Manager for its Soundcraft, Studer and AKG brands. A 22-year veteran of the pro audio industry, Shorter joined HARMAN in 2009 as Field Applications Engineer, specializing in support for the Soundcraft and Studer digital console ranges. In addition to his new position of Technical Services Manager, Shorter continues as an active field engineer throughout the continental United States and provides technical sales support.

Shorter was one of the first digital console and editorial field service engineers in the world. For 20 years, he worked closely with some of the biggest names in the broadcast and post industries, such as BBC, NHK, Warner Bros, Disney, SWF, OPTUS TV, Carlton, and Shepperton and Pinewood Studios. At the beginning of 2000 he started his own company, Backup Audio Visual Ltd., providing a combination of pro audio and video services, including sales, rental consultancy and specialist support.

Shorter started his electronics career in 1979 as an apprentice for a small TV and video rental store and service department in southeast England. He studied TV and industrial electronics at Southend College of Technology (now known as the South East Essex College of Arts and Technology), then spent six years working for GEC/Marconi Avionics testing Airborne Radar line units for Tornado aircraft before entering the pro audio world in 1989 working for AMS.

“As the Soundcraft, Studer and AKG brands continue to grow in the United States, we embrace the responsibility of scaling our customer support infrastructure accordingly,” noted Keith Watson, Marketing Director, HARMAN Mixing Group. “Having such a talented and experienced engineer as Paul Shorter already in the HARMAN fold made his appointment an easy decision and we can think of no individual more capable of tackling the challenges of his new position.”

“Joining HARMAN two and half years ago was a wonderful opportunity and I consider myself very fortunate to be presented with my current challenges in this new position,” Shorter said. “The combination of leading a great team of people to provide the best possible customer support, the ability to remain in the midst of a diverse customer base and the chance to work closely with our dynamic sales team on new projects is proving very exciting indeed. Having spent 20 years in post-production, I am enjoying the challenges broadcast and live sound are adding to my personal knowledge base.”

HARMAN (www.harman.com) designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of audio and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer and professional markets – supported by 15 leading brands, including AKG, Harman Kardon, Infinity, JBL, Lexicon and Mark Levinson. The Company is admired by audiophiles across multiple generations and supports leading professional entertainers and the venues where they perform. More than 25 million automobiles on the road today are equipped with HARMAN audio and infotainment systems. HARMAN has a workforce of about 13,000 people across the Americas, Europe and Asia, and reported net sales of $4.2 billion for twelve months ending December 31, 2011.

Such is the case on Common Law, the upcoming comedy-drama television series created by Cormac and Marianne Wibberly for cable channel USA Network. Produced by CBS Television Studios and Junction Entertainment, the series stars Michael Ealy and Warren Kole, and their constant bickering prompts their commanding officer, Captain Mike Sutton, to send them to a couples therapist, Dr. Emma Ryan, in hopes of resolving the situation. When it comes to the show’s location sound requirements, keeping up with action is quite a challenge. That’s why wireless microphone technology from Lectrosonics is on the set. more
