Jands Vista Gets Festive at White’s Chapel UMC

Three Jands Vista T2 consoles, each running the next generation Vista v2 software, are controlling lighting and media at White’s Chapel United Methodist Church (UMC) in Dallas, Texas, USA.

In the run up to Christmas a spectacular show, “Celebrate The Light”, is being projected onto the front of the impressive 250 ft wide by 150 ft high façade of the church building. Drawing crowds of up to 5,000, and running six times a night, a Vista T2 is in control of this popular show.

Tim Georgeff, the Church’s Creative Director, had been dreaming about producing a Christmas projection presentation on the building for some time. With the help of Steve Alford of leading technical production company Alford Media – who supplied three Barco 20K FLM projectors and a pair of Green Hippo Grasshopper media servers – as well as local graphic designer David Koss this became a reality.

The Vista controlled the Grasshopper media servers to create the detailed Video presentation the team were after. Vista’s graphical interface made the process fast, accurate and smooth.

Throughout the duration of the festive season White’s Chapel run events including a major annual Christmas musical. This year’s production, “Born Where the Shadows Lie”, has lighting designed by Keith Allen from Alford Media.

Fixtures include VARI*LITE VL 3000s, Martin Professional MAC 550s and GLP Volkslicht LED washes , Chroma-Q™ Color Block DB4™ LED battens, plus ETC Source Four profiles, PARs and fresnels.

Tim comments that the ease of programming on the Vista made creating both these shows a very time-efficient process, remarking on how simple it is to get the most from whatever technology they choose to use – whether moving lights, conventionals, LED, or media servers.

White’s Chapel have been running the Vista v2 software for some time, with Tim highlighting that information is clear and readable; its fast setup is “fantastic” and it is “so easy” to navigate.

Tim explains that they loved the first Vista T2 they bought so much that they went out and purchased a second for their smaller venue! Both are in constant use with the busy schedule in its two worship facilities – the main 2,500 capacity auditorium and the second 650 capacity facility, ‘The Bridge’.

Karen Monid became the first sound artist to present a stand-alone acoustic artwork for York’s annual “Illuminating York” digital arts and lighting festival. “Contours” brought a fresh, provocative and highly entertaining medium through which visitors to the 2011 Festival could explore and enjoy the city’s rich cultural history.

The ground-breaking decision to stage the piece – exploring the poetic, religious and musical culture of ancient York’s Viking settlers and Anglo-Saxons – in the city’s Dean’s Park received great critical and popular acclaim. It was experienced by over 50,000 visitors across 4 evenings.
This year’s Festival theme of ‘Voices from the Past’ – the first time it has had a content signature – enabled the Festival event to broaden into some new platforms and parameters whereby the public could explore, interpret and understand the city as a place with a living breathing past. Contours was one of these toe-dipping installations.
York is also the home to a number of famous ghosts, and has a thriving night time tourist and local economy based on its ghostology, which gave the historical value of the piece additional resonance and meaning.
Monid has created soundscapes for two previous Illuminating York Festival projects, both of them accompanying visual works by large format projection specialist Ross Ashton. The dual site ‘Accendo’ in 2008 and last year’s ‘Rose’ son et lumière at York Minster were both exceptionally well received, and whilst researching and creating these, Monid built up an intuitive feel and affinity with the City and the importance to it of this specific historical era.
“I was extremely proud to be asked to present Contours in York,” says Monid, “I felt it was a real compliment to and an extension of my previous work there, and I was even more delighted with the turnout”.
Contours was physically set up as a circular soundfield that could accommodate up to 400 people in the centre for each 10 minute looped session. It was mixed as a quadrophonic soundtrack with no synthesised sounds applied – all source material being originated from raw recordings.
“The presentation blended past tradition and modern technology,” she explains, adding that this basic approach creates a very rich, real and enveloping atmosphere in which the guest becomes immersed.
Monid recorded poetic recitations in seven different languages – Old Norse and Old English – as per the originals – and then translations into modern Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Icelandic and English. These were fragmented yet all worked continuously as one rhythmic communication.
“The idea is that people experience the power and emotion at the very essence of the sounds and spoken words, and reproduce their own autonomous ranges of accompanying images in their heads,” explains Monid.
All the instruments involved in the Contours soundscape are genuine reproduction articles from the period played by Monid herself. This includes a seventh century lyre modelled on one found at Sutton Hoo and reproduction wooden pan-pipes, based on an original set unearthed at the Jorvik excavations in York. She also plays a sheep’s bone flute custom made for the project in Norway.
The texts were taken from the Poetic Edda, a collection emanating from Medieval Iceland and based on the mythologies and allegories of Beowulf, an epic Anglo Saxon poem written in Old English.
Monid wrote an original piece of kulning – a song used by shepherdesses, primarily in Sweden, to recall cattle at the end of a day’s grazing – in a very British style, which is integrated into the work. Its tonality is traditionally designed to project over large landscapes and can carry for several kilometres.
Choosing the right site in York was vitally important. It had to be well endowed with elements of nature and as far as possible, quiet, which is always challenging in an urban setting. Having full acoustic control was paramount due to the importance of the words and the idea of recreating the vibe of walking into a Bardic campfire scene and hearing stories told by the Bard and his lyre.
Monid decided to add a circle of light to the installation to denote the soundfield and encourage people to walk in and listen, for which she worked with lighting designer Neville Milsom. It was a simple set up with lighting fixtures changing colours along with the flow of the piece. Lighting equipment was supplied by Stage Electrics.
The d&b loudspeaker system of four C7 speakers and four Q-SUBS were supplied by The Stage Management Company. The speakers were positioned 20 metres apart, and Monid designed special weatherised hides for these which were built by Raise The Roof. In the dark, the speakers were invisible, blending into the trees, foliage and other surroundings. The soundtrack was played back via an Alesis HD 24 machine via a small sound console. Also part of the technical staging team was Illuminating York production manager Ben Pugh.
The positive feedback has been spectacular and should set the scene for further developments to the festival and the more potential for both audio and combined sound and visual projects.
Editor’s Note :
Contours was originally commissioned for Odin’s Glow, where it was designed and presented as a large outdoor surround sound installation near a small village bordering Newton-Under-Roseberry in Cleveland for Redcar & Cleveland Council. It was re-mixed and adapted by Monid to work in the completely contrasting setting of York

OOBAXS Brings Switches Capable of Mixing CATx & Fiber to US Market

High Definition (HD) KVM DVI Draco matrix switches are capable of mixing both CATx and fiber optic connections

Hollywood Studios Jump on New Technology

OOBAXS (pronounced Out of Band Access), the console access authority for data centers and broadcasting today announced that it is bringing High Definition (HD) KVM DVI Draco matrix switches capable of mixing both CATx and fiber optic connections between source and target to the US market. The switches are manufactured by IHSE Germany, a leading developer and innovator in high speed, high definition DVI and KVM/Video extension and switching solutions.

OOBAXS, one of Hollywood’s leading technology integrators will provide installations, support and guidance on deployments at numerous post-production facilities. “The Draco series is the fastest core switching product on the market,” said Alan Frank, technology strategist and founder of OOBAXS. “IHSE’s willingness to be a responsive partner with their end-users has led to the evolution of a product that is changing the way movies are made.”

The Draco offers DVI video extenders over CATx or Fiber for “mission critical” server and computer access, as well as, fiber optic HD-KVM matrix switches. The Draco, featuring ZERO blocking, high speed switching, HD DVI to 1920×1200, and four HID, has already made its impact on Hollywood studios.

Working with OOBAXS to design and deploy a solution using Draco, Shapeshifter Post was the first post-production facility in Hollywood to embrace the high speed technology. “We had been researching KVM Matrix switching/extension options for many months, and needed a robust solution that could support all our input devices without issue, including our Avid Symphony, DS, and Media Composer, as well as De Vinci Resolve, and Final Cut Pro workstations,” said Russo Anastasio, president of Shapeshifter Post. “We knew that by installing the IHSE Draco, we would increase our productivity, but didn’t realize the extent of that increase would be such a game changer!”

“Post-production tasks can be time consuming and draining on resources and typically depend on individual hardware and locations,” added Alan Frank. “An editor may have traditionally worked in one bay for picture editing, but then would need to move to a new location to add in special effects or color-time. With the Draco, an entire production house worth of resources becomes accessible at any single end-point.”

OOBAXS (pronounced Out of Band Access) provides anywhere, anytime console access to broadcast facilities and data centers. The company has a long track record integrating access solutions to help data center managers gain access to any appliance or piece of equipment in their network. OOBAXS.COM has been instrumental in bringing the latest technologies to data centers helping them improve anytime access, image/video quality, productivity, access speed, and a more flexible infrastructure. OOBAXS has brought modern data center tools and techniques into the broadcast world. The result is a client list that includes the world largest movie, recording, radio and television studios as well as Fortune 100 company data-centers. As video, speed and visual interfaces continue to improve; OOBAXS will remain a leading resource for CIOs, CTOs, and broadcast engineers.

Colour Sound Supplies EPIC Show at Alexandra Palace

London, UK rental company Colour Sound Experiment (CSE) supplied lighting, lasers and LED screens for the two day Bass Culture / Together Winter Music Festival at London’s Alexandra Palace venue, which culminated in an incendiary EPIC performance – Eric Prydz in Concert.

Also on the weekend bill were some of the best names in techno, trance, electro and drum ‘n’ bass including Pete Tong, John Digweed, Simian Mobile Disco, etc. while Friday night’s Bass Culture was equally as exciting, headlined by Chase & Status. Three other Halls at Ali Pali were in action for the two completely sold out all-nighters produced by the Lock ‘n Load Events team.
Colour Sound is a regular supplier to their events, and Haydn Cruickshank comments, “It was great to be involved in this fresh new event which united a lot of familiar faces on the production team. The main challenge was the complete turnaround in the Great Hall across the two days”, although with an intensive summer of festivals behind them, the Colour Sound crew took this completely in their stride.
The lighting rig for the Great Hall was specified and designed to accommodate the requirements of both headline acts. The very serious changeover started at 6 a.m. on the Saturday morning after the event closed, resulting in two very diverse productions facilitating the two nights of superlative dance music.
Colour Sound also supplied all the trussing, motors and rigging to fly the EPIC set, which amounted to 50 points.
A total of 130 moving lights were utilised, a mix of GLP Impressions, Martin Professional MAC 250 Beams and Clay Paky Stage Zoom 1200s, which were distributed around the trussing and band sets.
This was the third and final of three EPIC show performances this year with visuals created by Immersive’s Mark Calvert, the show’s creative director and production manager. The EPIC stage is defined by a series of wide scenic panels stretching out far beyond the stage, plus two vertical columns towards the centre with rotating and static sections.
These surfaces are all fed with images stored on an Addict media server, which are mapped beautifully to the shapes and contours of the set. The show also incorporates a large Musion holographic screen fitted into a 45 degree angled truss frame filling the downstage area in front of the DJ booth. Content is beamed onto this from LED panels laid flat on the floor – also supplied by Colour Sound and fed by content from the Addict server – producing really bright and effective floating 3D visuals that match and contrast with the main projections.
Colour Sound supplied the moving mechanism for the set columns, in the form of custom 100Kg editions of Robe’s Stage Banner rotating pole.
On the Friday night, the same 7 x 4 metres of LED panel laid on the floor for EPIC’s holograms was used to line 11 trusses in a thin strip effect.
The lighting for EPIC was run by Dave Parry using an Avolites Pearl, and the house lighting rig operated by Chris Steel using one of Colour Sound’s Chamsys MQ300s. Colour Sound also supplied a Pearl Expert with a Touch Wing for some of the other band’s LDs. Chase & Status’s LD Neil Carson brought in his own Chamsys desk
The lasers were four 6 Watt Vlitz Tippo greens, which were controlled by a Pangolin system.
In addition to these, there were a number of acts bringing in festival style ‘specials’ packages which also had to be integrated on both nights. This was again a seamless operation for Colour Sound’s 11 crew, chiefed by Andy Melleney, who applied their vast fund of green-field experience in this decidedly more urban environment – without having to worry about the weather!
In Room Two, the lighting rig included GLP Spot Ones and Robe ColorWash 700E AT moving lights, Sunstrips, Moles, PARs, ACLs and 8 x 4 metres of Colour Sound’s own BT37 LED screen with a Hippotizer media server, plus an Avo Pearl Expert console run by Dave Kyle.
The other two smaller rooms were provided with basic stage lighting rigs and LED uplighters around the walls to boost the atmosphere.
The event was a massive success, and looks sure to set a trend for ‘winter festivals’ to grow in popularity.
