AmberFin and ATG Broadcast Supply HD Standards Converters to Associated Press in its Journey Towards File-based Workflows

AP selects AmberFin iCR HD conversion and content normalization platform as it ramps up high definition broadcast services

AmberFin, a leading developer of file-based media ingest, transcoding and unified quality control solutions for content owners, broadcasters, sports organizations and post-production houses, and its UK channel partner, ATG Broadcast have announced the sale of AmberFin iCR high definition (HD) standards converter systems to the Associated Press (AP). The project is part of AP’s global transition to high definition (HD) operation with file-based workflows.
In parallel, ATG Broadcast has completed the construction of a new HD master control room (MCR) at AP’s international hub of global video operations in London. AmberFin’s iCR systems are being deployed in this facility as well as in the USA, and will assist the development of the news agency’s HD file-based workflow. AP selected AmberFin as a technology supplier after evaluation of appropriate vendors, stating that for HD frame rate conversion and down-converting from HD to SD AmberFin iCR offers an efficient solution.
Alongside HD conversion, AmberFin iCR will play an important role in what AP calls the ‘normalization’ of content that it receives. As one of the world’s leading international news agencies, AP receives news content from a broad range of sources ranging from video captured by a smartphone on the streets of Cairo to a broadcast quality file sent directly by its broadcast partners. iCR helps AP to ensure that all media files delivered across the AP network are fit for purpose for broadcasters to place within their editing and transmission workflows.

“We were attracted to AmberFin because of the quality of their file-based HD conversion and also by the company’s heritage in terms of its patent portfolio,” said David Hoad, AP Director of Global Video Technology. “Since that initial decision, we’ve found that AmberFin’s technical team is really good at resolving issues. They are incredibly responsive to our needs.”
Hoad reports that AP is more than half-way through its migration to file-based workflows. “We are pleased with AmberFin and look forward to continuing to enjoy our relationship in the future,” he said.

iartists Launches With International Mixed-Media Roster

With a mission to connect high-end talent with awesome brands, iartists has launched in Los Angeles to represent directors, designers, animators, visual effects pros, storytellers and digital experts, working across platforms, devices and spaces. Founded by Danixa Diaz and Ed Rivero, the company’s progressive artists rep model engages hybrid production and mixed-media talent with broadcast networks, advertising agencies, gaming companies and brands from around the globe.

iartists Executive Producer/Partner Danixa Diaz

iartists has curated a worldwide roster that includes Prologue, a design and filmmaking collective founded by industry visionary Kyle Cooper; design and live-action production company Süperfad for broadcast, gaming and US Hispanic commercial representation; and exclusive representation of creative shop Iron Claw, Uruguay-based VFX and motion graphics studio Aparato, Madrid-based VFX house La Huella, and COPA, a virtual creative entity founded by visual effects experts Alex Frisch (founder of Method Studios) and former Rhinofx partner Vico Sharabani.

“As a longtime advocate of mixed-media companies, we launched iartists to fill a void in how they’re represented,” remarks Danixa Diaz, partner/executive producer of iartists. “The creative shops and renowned global talent on our roster are not ‘post’ houses. They are full-service production companies with creative capabilities and directors, in most cases treating live-action, visual effects, design and animation as one process.”

“The new breed of directors is more dynamic in all aspects of production,” adds Ed Rivero, managing partner. “They have a strategic, conceptual way of looking at the entire scope of a project, and how everything falls into place, increasing efficiency and continuity. Now we have a more robust budget because it’s being spent on the whole concept versus just one component.”

Diaz will guide iartists drawing from her deep industry roots in branding, production, post-production and mixed media. Prior to iartists, Diaz was Director of Business Development at Imaginary Forces for seven years. In addition to her active involvement with several industry organizations, she has notably served on the PromaxBDA board since 2003, and is currently a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Title Design Executive Committee for the Emmy® Awards.

As hybrid studios continue to play a more integral role in creating content for commercials, broadcast and gaming, iartists aims to bring that trend to the forefront of the industry promoting the full-service capabilities of its client niche. With a single director or team overseeing the project to completion, iartists sees a holistic production approach from which network and agency clients will benefit.

Explains Diaz: “Many jobs are simply more suitable for these companies because nowadays we have designers and VFX artists who are also amazing live-action directors. In the commercial realm, their skills often go hand-in-hand with production and shouldn’t be treated as post; moreover, on the broadcast side, many of them are already acting as creatives for networks developing concepts and producing content from beginning to end. Lots of projects still call for the traditional approach, but we’re here to advocate the alternative when it makes sense in order to get the smartest, best work possible.”

The “i” in iartists stands for “international,” representing the company’s multifaceted mission. On the business landscape, iartists will bring international talent to the U.S. and conversely, it will take American-based talent to international markets.

iartists has already closed several projects for its roster including an ad campaign, branding, promo and main title work for clients in Latin America, Europe and the US.

New Christie SKA-3D Cinema Processor Enables Virtually Any Alternative Content Source on a Digital Cinema Projector

>Christie® has announced the launch of the new Christie® SKA-3D™ digital cinema processor, a powerful product innovation that delivers flawless audio performance and 2D/3D image playback from virtually any content source on any brand of projector with separate L/R eye dual DVI inputs. It is a true, high-caliber “all in one” cinema processor that ends equipment rack clutter by combining multiple units typically found in a projection booth – an audio processor, digital crossovers, video scaler, 3D decoders, video cross conversion and more – into a single, lightweight and compact box.

.

On the video front, the new Christie SKA-3D, featuring full support for SENSIO® Hi-Fi 3D and RealD Format, seamlessly switches between multiple 2D/3D alternative content sources – including pre-show advertising servers, Blu-ray players, Sony PlayStation®, set-top boxes, personal computers and satellite feeds – which in turn facilitate new revenue streams for digital cinema owners through the playback of any content available to them.

.

Additionally, the Christie SKA-3D provides audio support for up to 16 DCI-AES input channels from the cinema server/Integrated Media Block (IMB) and is configurable with up to ten balanced analog outputs and five, two-way crossovers, as well as built-in support for Hearing Impaired (HI) and Visually Impaired-Narrative (VI-N) audio outputs. It is fully equipped with high-end audio processing features such as 1/3 octave EQ for main channels, parametric EQ for LFE channel, adjustable lip-sync delay, individual speaker channel delays, microphone input, and flexible input to output channel mapping to support any installed equipment.

.

Beyond that, with numerous analog/digital audio connectors and extensive support for Dolby® and DTS® multichannel audio formats, this is the only cinema processor that is up to the task of making a cinema owner’s alternative content sound as spectacular as the sound heard in feature presentations.

.

“The Christie SKA-3D is ideal for new digital cinema installations where performance and value are critical in today’s budget-conscious environment. It is also a cost-effective upgrade to those existing installations with older processors that cannot accept digital input from their cinema servers, IMBs, or various alternative content sources,” noted Don Shaw, senior director, Entertainment Solutions, Christie.

.

Swiss Army Knife of Cinema Processors
Many older installations today use multiple boxes for alternative content support, video scaling, A/D & D/A conversion, audio processing, and digital crossovers. “To upgrade their systems, owners would need to add a digital-to-analog converter that can cost thousands of dollars or upgrade their audio processor – all expensive propositions,” said Shaw. “The Christie SKA-3D delivers the digital input these older theatres need, while upgrading their processing and connectivity capabilities and integrating the widest range of alternative content feeds and interfaces in a single product and at a reasonable price.”

.

No other audio processor on the market today can match the scaling/processing/switching capabilities of the Christie SKA-3D while providing 3D playback from any consumer product into a digital cinema projector, added Shaw. “With Christie SKA-3D, exhibitors can expand their portfolio offerings at a lower cost, while improving and enhancing the audio quality of their digital cinema presentations,” he noted.

.

“Because it can be used with any projector and brand – not just D-cinema – it can provide professional audio processing for the most popular A/V products and gaming systems in the market,” said Shaw. “In fact, although not its primary market, one can even envision the Christie SKA-3D forming part of the ultimate home theater set-up in the future.”

.

The Christie SKA-3D will be on display in Christie booth #2111 and in the Milano Room at CinemaCon 2012, held April 23 – 26 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Streamline Content: New York Production Company Places a Premium on Efficiency in Everything from Producing Spots to Building Reels

Los Angeles— Streamline Content is aptly named. The New York-based production company, headed by director Peter Kagan and executive producer Brian Bennhoff, has reduced the business of producing commercials to its essentials: “creative thinking, production smarts and a sharp focus on what’s needed to maximize the potential in a storyboard.” That simple formula has led it to compile an enviable track record for repeat business with such well known brands as Dannon, Blue Cross, MTV and the U.S. Army.

Given the company’s near obsessive concern with efficiency and value, it’s not surprising that in selecting a media management platform, it chose Simian. “We researched all the available platforms and in terms of functionality, support and cost, everything pointed to Simian,” says Bennhoff. “I test drove the system and was impressed. I especially liked the access we had to the development team. It gave me confidence that we would continue to receive great support as we implemented and employed the system.”

MediaCom and DAT Provide Full HARMAN Upgrade To Luxury Radisson BLU Hotel In Tunisia

NORTHRIDGE, California – The five-star Radisson BLU Hotel, located in Tunisia, recently completed a full upgrade of their audio system to coincide with a comprehensive renovation. Local HARMAN distributor MediaCom SA designed a system including JBL, Crown, and BSS Audio components with the installation handled by local contractor, DAT. Situated on the resort island of Djerba, the luxury hotel’s upgrades include new bars, restaurants, conference rooms and a spa.

For sound reinforcement MediaCom SA chose JBL Control 24CT loudspeakers, the Control 19CS 8″ ceiling bass driver, as well as Control 25AV surface-mount speakers. Four of the conference rooms were equipped with the JBL Control 200 series, favoring the ultra-wide ceiling speaker coverage from the 6.5″ coaxial drivers. Control 226C’s, with integrated back can, were featured in the hotel’s conference room. Control 227C’s were deployed in the remaining rooms. The lobby, spa, and pool areas also utilized the Control 226C’s.

The JBL speakers were assigned to a combination of six Crown CTs 8200A and two Crown CTs 4200A amplifiers. This system was networked with HARMAN HiQnet System Architect(tm), which allowed the amplifiers to deliver comprehensive monitoring and control functionality along with digital audio transport. Additionally, all signal processing in the new areas of the hotel is handled by BSS Audio Soundweb London devices.

Commenting on the system MediaCom chairman, Ridha Ourzli stated, “This audio solution provides great ease of use for the technical staff, the hotel’s technical engineer can receive full system feedback and diagnostics on the networked audio system from his computer.”

Ourzli added that since DAT are regular customers of HARMAN brands, their familiarity with the systems made the integration straightforward. “The client is delighted, and extremely satisfied with the solution we have provided.”

HARMAN (www.harman.com) designs, manufactures and markets a wide range of audio and infotainment solutions for the automotive, consumer and professional markets – supported by 15 leading brands, including AKG, Harman Kardon, Infinity, JBL, Lexicon and Mark Levinson. The Company is admired by audiophiles across multiple generations and supports leading professional entertainers and the venues where they perform. More than 25 million automobiles on the road today are equipped with HARMAN audio and infotainment systems. Brickyard Filmworks Produces Feature Documentary “From Nothing, Something”

Doc to Premiere April 29 at Boston International Film Festival

Boston, MA (April 24, 2012) – Director Tim Cawley tapped frequent collaborators at Brickyard VFX to produce his feature documentary From Nothing, Something, through their feature division, Brickyard Filmworks. The documentary chronicles the creative processes behind such great minds as Tom Perrotta, Sara Quin of Tegan & Sara, Neville Page, Preston Scott Cohen, Huma Bhabha and others ranging from cancer researchers to celebrity chefs, to uncover where people get their ideas and how they bring them to fruition. The film premieres Sunday, April 29 at the 10th annual Independent Film Festival Boston (IFFBoston), in Boston, Massachusetts.

Cawley, an award-winning group creative director at Boston-based ad agency Hill Holliday, has worked with Brickyard many times through advertising campaigns for clients such as Dunkin Donuts and Major League Baseball. He also worked with the Brickyard team for his recent short film, 2009’s Big Day of Fishing. When it came time to put his team together for From Nothing, Something, Cawley said, “I knew we needed folks who weren’t just talented – that’s a given – we needed folks who were next-level passionate about the things they make. I’d already worked with Geoff and the Brickyard team and I knew they fit that bill one hundred and ten percent.”

Brickyard’s Geoff McAuliffe, Amy Appleton and Henrique Ghersi worked with Cawley on the project from start to finish over the course of two years. McAuliffe explained, “This was such a different process from our usual projects, and it was an amazing learning experience for a lot of the team members. This was a passion project for all involved, working in locations all over the country, doing all of our own lighting and shooting, and so much more. It was great food for the soul.”

DP McAuliffe and cameraman Ghersi shot all of the sit-down interviews in 4K with a RED camera and all b-roll with two Canon 5Ds. They also received additional footage in a variety of formats including Canon 7D, Panasonic 154 AVCCAM, Panasonic HVX, Flip Cameras, DBetas, HDCAMs, DVDs and scanned materials. This footage not only varied in format, but also in frame-rate and resolution. Transcoding the various footage into a specific format, resolution and frame-rate was a major undertaking for the Brickyard team. Once uniform, the footage was cleaned up in Autodesk Flame and delivered to editor Kat Baker. Brickyard ultimately ended up with 10 terabytes – around 100 hours – of footage, stored across 20 drives.

Brickyard also provided cleanup and finishing work for the documentary via Brickyard VFX.

“Brickyard didn’t just work on the project, they absolutely lived it, from conception to production, through filming and post,” said Cawley. “Together, we achieved something near impossible: we made a downright beautiful feature film with just a handful of hardcore, passionate people. It never would have gotten done without Brickyard.”
