All Mobile Video Upgrades Its Broadcast Trucks With HARMAN Studer Vista 9 And Vista 5 M3 Consoles

NEW YORK, New York – All Mobile Video (AMV) is one of the country’s premier providers of end-to-end video and audio solutions for broadcast, entertainment, programming and events, with sound stages and studios throughout Manhattan, while also maintaining a fleet of mobile trucks nationwide. The company was one of the first to embrace high-definition video and keeps itself in the vanguard of broadcast technology, as evidenced by its recent purchase of HARMAN Studer Vista 9 and Vista 5 M3 digital mixing consoles for two of its broadcast trucks.

The Vista 9 is being installed in AMV’s “Revolution” truck, a 53-foot double-expando trailer formerly known as “Resolution.” The Studer Vista 5 M3 is going into a 50-foot broadcast truck called “NYLA.” Both vehicles are being completely refurbished with the latest video and audio gear. Once back on the road, both trucks will be ready to handle any mobile broadcast situation—AMV has done production for the MTV Video Music Awards, the Metropolitan Opera’s live-to-theater broadcasts, the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show and many other high-profile events.

AMV has a long history with Studer, having purchased its first Vista 8 console eight years ago and being the first company in the USA to install a Studer console on a mobile truck. “At the time, it was a big gamble and we were making a real statement to the industry about our confidence in the product,” said Ian Vysick, AMV Audio Development Specialist. When AMV decided to upgrade the Revolution truck, the Vista 9 was AMV’s only choice. The Vista 8 formerly used in Revolution isn’t being retired—it’s being moved to one of AMV’s Manhattan sound stages.

“From the minute we started using Vista consoles it quickly became clear that aside from their exceptional sound quality they offered outstanding ease of use,” Vysick said. He noted that AMV crews manage different jobs every day with different people and the ability to quickly bring users up to speed is crucial. “The Vista 9 and Vista 5 M3 make it easier to get people comfortable with technology in a short amount of time.”

For Vysick, “it’s always been about the Vistonics™ touchscreen,” which places key control elements up front and displays everything in real time. He finds the FaderGlow™ color-coding to be invaluable as it allows AMV to configure all their broadcast and studio consoles with the same color-coding for the same functions.

“From a user standpoint one of the most important attributes of the Vista consoles is that the controls are fast and responsive and don’t overshoot—on some digital consoles there’s a lag between the time you move a control and the time it responds, meaning that you’re always going back and forth until you get to where you want things to be,” Vysick pointed out. He also likes the consoles’ ability to momentarily gang select all inputs at once and make changes to all the selected channels instantly—a real timesaver for AMV when configuring a console.

Things don’t always go as planned in live broadcast mixing and Vista consoles are the ones Vysick wants in his corner when the unforeseen happens. “The History mode is a huge advantage,” he stated. “If a problem occurs for whatever reason, you can look at the meter bridge, identify the issue and resolve it without any guesswork required.”

In the unlikely event Vysick might lose a fader or a screen, he finds the Vista 9, 8 and 5 M3’s repeating modular control layout—he calls it “sections of 10”—and dual redundant computers operating in real time enable him to configure the console live and in real time.

Studer’s level of factory and hardware support is a key factor in the equation. “If something does go wrong and we can’t fix it on site, we need to know a company has people we can get in touch with and parts in stock to ship,” Vysick noted. “When I call and say I’m going live tomorrow at five, I’m not kidding! Studer is always there to help and listen and take suggestions from people in the field. For me, keeping things running smoothly is as much about support as it is about hardware and software.”

Blackmagic Design Announces a Major New Update for ATEM Production Switchers!

New software update includes Save and Restore for all ATEM Production Switchers and 1080p progressive video formats for the ATEM Production Studio 4K model!

Fremont, CA – July 3, 2013 - Blackmagic Design today announced ATEM 4.1 software update which lets customers save and restore full or partial switcher states on all ATEM Production Switchers, plus adds 1080p 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 50, 59.94 frame rates for the ATEM Production Studio 4K model.

The new progressive frame rates allow customers to work in 1080p 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 50, 59.94 progressive video formats, which means ATEM Production Studio 4K now connects to an even wider range of HD devices including low cost consumer HDMI and professional SDI cameras, routers, media playout servers and more!

This new ATEM 4.1 software update also allows all ATEM customers to save and restore switcher states on any ATEM Production Switcher! With powerful macro like control, save and restore can be used in three ways. Save and restore the entire switcher state, save only a piece to restore, or load just a piece of an entire saved state. For example, you can recall a complicated chromakey setup without affecting the rest of the switcher state during a live production!

Now customers can simply save to a laptop, hard disk or USB and plug in to load saved states at the next session using any ATEM production switcher, in any location! Each new saved state is conveniently saved to the folder as a new file with time and date stamp, which means that customers can confidently save multiple states throughout a broadcast without worrying about accidentally saving over the top of another. With all the saved versions in one folder, it’s easy to go backwards and forwards in time restoring favorite settings instantly!

“It’s incredibly exciting to be able to give our customers powerful macro like control of their ATEM switchers! Now they can save entire switcher states or just part of a switcher state for keyers, audio mixer and even SuperSource on the ATEM 2 M/E to XML files. Customers can save as many settings files as they like and recall them as they want, just like macros.” said Grant Petty, CEO, Blackmagic Design.

Video Hawks Uses Blackmagic Design for “World War Z” Video Assist Carts

Fremont, CA – July 3, 2013 - Blackmagic Design today announced that Los Angeles based Video Hawks built three innovative video assist carts used in the filming of the summer blockbuster “World War Z.” The carts were built around Blackmagic Design’s Compact Videohub routers and Videohub Smart Control panels, HDLink Pro DVI and numerous Mini Converters.

Video Hawks, founded by its current President, Tom Loewy, is one of the industry’s leading video assist companies. Having partnered with technology genius, Technoprops’ founder Glenn Derry, Video Hawks has built and operated ground breaking video assist, camera, VFX support and motion capture technology for some of the biggest movies ever made, including the augmented reality system Simulcam made famous for its use on “Avatar” and “Real Steel.”

For “World War Z,” Video Hawks provided video assist carts used across international shooting locations, including the United Kingdom, Malta and Budapest. The carts gave the film’s director and DP the ability to improve lighting and camera angles, see raw footage immediately and view shots with effects added in real time, showing where masses of zombies, soldiers and unhappy victims were located in the shots and how the final images would appear.

“‘World War Z’ just is not a clean film in terms of what is happening on the screen and on the set. Smoke, explosions and constant action had to be mixed with hordes of zombies, including actors in makeup and wearing motion tracking suits, and areas where CGI zombies would need to be added later,” said Dan Moore, co owner, Video Hawks. “Filming was a down, dirty and extreme challenge, and the director and DP needed to see what they shot, make changes and set tone and ambiance right on the set while taking into account all of the extra imagery needed.”

Each cart had multiple Compact Videohubs for routing of media, Videohub Smart Control panels, HDLink Pro DVI devices for monitoring and a number of different Mini Converters to handle the various feeds from multiple cameras and graphics and effects systems. Once a shot was completed, Video Hawks’ co owners Glenn Derry and Dan Moore recorded footage and incorporated needed effects in real time, allowing the director and DP to view and adjust shots, lighting and actor and prop placement.

“On set control and giving the director and DP the ability to see the final look was vital on ‘World War Z.’ With Blackmagic Design as the core of these carts, we were able to provide that and have the flexibility to answer any request made of us. And the products are built to fit in perfectly with any workflow we throw at it. With the Videohubs in particular, I could manually change inputs or manage them from my laptop or iPad,” said Moore.

“Also, this was not an easy shoot on any of the equipment. We went from the amazing heat of Malta in the summer to winter in Budapest and had to deal with smoke, bombs going off, grit and dust. Blackmagic equipment has muscle and durability though,” continued Moore. “The great thing about working with Blackmagic equipment is that I can sleep at night knowing it just won’t fail. And an added bonus is that the great looking design of Blackmagic products lets our carts look beautiful as well.”

SSL C-Series Digital Broadcast Consoles Power HD Audio Production For Yle Finland

TAMPERE, FINLAND – A Solid State Logic C100 HDS Digital Broadcast Console and a C10 HD Compact Broadcast Console were chosen to power the HD audio productions for Yle, the national broadcasting company for Finland, and one of 23 founding broadcasting organizations of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU). Serving a viewing population of 5.3 million people across five television and seven radio channels, the mandate for full HD production required upgrading facilities in Helsinki and Tampere to meet the demand for the new formats. The SSL consoles, residing in two production studios in Tampere, offer the professional feature set necessary to for the state-of-the-art Yle facilities.

“To complete our move into HD production, we upgraded our smaller live control room with the C10 and built a new room entirely for the C100,” says Antti Immonen, technical producer, Yle. “The consoles were introduced to us at IBC and then we visited SSL in England as part of the equipment research process. We were very impressed with what we saw. Broadcasters in general and public broadcasters specifically, really need to watch the bottom line when it comes to expanding production facilities. SSL won the tender because the consoles offer the power and advanced capability we needed for this application at a cost-efficient price point.”

The SSL installation at Yle carries with it the entire suite of SSL Production Assistant software packages that includes Dialogue Automix, a program ideal for panel-type productions, and 5.1 Upmix to create surround audio tracks from stereo tracks. DAW Control allows Yle to maximize its post production experience by offering integrated control of the resident Pro Tools DAW when live programs are also recorded for future release in different formats. The consoles are connected to the rest of the studio complex through SSL’s Alpha-Link Live I/O units.

“As both studios are really new, we are just starting to use several of the Production Assistant features with good results,” continues Immonen. “Shows that are broadcast in 5.1 usually go through a post production stage here in our dedicated post production studios, however, in summer we broadcast live entertainment and sports events, and those productions are in 5.1. The 5.1 Upmix feature gives us the power to easily insert stereo tracks into the mix, maintaining the surround field. We also like the Dialogue Automix feature. We produce some shows where as many as 10 people could be talking at one time and this feature makes easy work of this type of production.”

Yle uses the Riedel MediorNet router for station networking. The seamless integration of the SSL consoles with MediorNet has streamlined the production process.

“Everything about our facility upgrade is working according to plan or better, including the integration between our router and the SSL digital consoles,” states Immonen. “For the audio side, the learning curve for the engineering staff was straightforward, as the SSL consoles offer a user interface that is reasonably uncomplicated to learn. Some nice things mentioned by the staff are that you can clearly see all your signals at all times, the sound quality is spot on and they do not have to page down into menus to make changes to a signal. The SSL consoles do what we need them to do for the live broadcast part of our operations.”

UEFA Under-21 Championship Enhanced With Orad PlayMaker Sports Replay Server

July 3, 2013 – Orad, leader in broadcast graphics solutions, today announced its PlayMaker sports replay server played a significant role in the production of the UEFA Euro Under-21 Championships. The 15-game tournament, held over a period of two weeks, was produced by Mizmor Productions. Mizmor has used PlayMaker for major sports productions extensively over the past four years.

“PlayMaker enabled a great variety of camera angles to be replayed during the game,” comments Daniel Lankry, CEO of Mizmor Productions. “In addition, with PlayMaker’s file sharing between multiple servers, we were able to edit three types of highlights: a 10-minute recap of each half, summary of all goals and best plays, and all other major events such as red cards, substitutions, etc.”

In this high profile production, the group stage games were covered by 12 cameras, two of them super slow motion, at three times less the normal speed. With its eight-channel servers and flexible configuration, only three PlayMakers were required for the task, with each operator having two outputs for back-to-back playout of replays with a mix effect. In the semifinals and finals, an additional PlayMaker was added to cover a total of 14 cameras; three of them super slow motion, with one of the PlayMakers mixing super slow motion and standard cameras simultaneously.

Lankry adds, “The actual production started two hours before the match and consisted of editing the highlights of the players’ arrival, warm-ups and the pre-game ceremony. The highlights were then transmitted to the EBU satellite to be used by other broadcasters.”

PlayMaker’s Smart Event touch screen tagging tool provided the operators the ability to instantly tag every play or clip with all relevant metadata such as player’s name, action, etc. to be immediately sorted and recalled according to the director’s request.

PlayMaker’s PlayNet module with fast Gigabit connection provided instant clip sharing between multiple servers, for highlights editing and bumpers playout from any angle.

With PlayMaker Ethernet-based import and export tools, all pre-game segments were easily imported from a standard windows NLE environment, instantly available for playout.
