Hybrid’s New Sport Track Technology Enables Robotic Cameras to Automatically Follow Live Sports Action

Using “Robotic Camera Operators” Cuts Live Sports Production Costs

Montrouge, FranceHybrid, a leading provider of real-time graphics and robotic camera systems, has developed Sport Track, an exclusive, innovative technology that enables robotic cameras to automatically follow live game action.

The breakthrough technology sends the positional tracking data from the manned master camera to an unmanned slave camera so that it can follow the game’s movement.

“Sport Track enables sports broadcasters to reduce the number of manned cameras required to cover a live game,” said Olivier Cohen. “It not only reduces operating costs, it also enriches the quality of the program. Broadcasters and production companies can employ more cameras to cover the game while staying within increasingly tight, competitive budgets.”

When Hybrid began developing Sport Track one year ago, the technical challenge was daunting. While robotic cameras have long been used in fixed positions, Hybrid faced a new question, ‘How could a robotic camera be made to see and follow fast moving live game action like soccer or football in real-time?’

After considerable trial and error, Hybrid discovered the answer. A manned Cartoni motion tracking pan/tilt/zoom/focus (PTZF) camera serves as the master camera, which is networked to a Hybrid Titanium robotic camera head.

Using the newly developed software and drivers from Hybrid, all of the camera data—including position, angle, distance, and speed—is optically tracked, encoded and transmitted by the Cartoni camera over to the Titanium robotic camera head. These coordinates “tell” the Titanium (robotic slave) camera head how and where to move to follow the game action precisely.

“The idea for Sport Track was originally inspired by Host Broadcast Systems (HBS), who approached us with a need for this technology in the coverage of their live soccer championships,” said Cohen. Owned by Infront Sports & Media, HBS is the host broadcaster of major sporting events, including the upcoming 2014 FIFA World Cup Championships in Brazil. “We also found tremendous interest in this automatic camera system when we spoke with sports broadcasters and producers at the 2012 IBC Show and the 2013 NAB Show—who wanted to increase the number of cameras for a more visually interesting live game without increasing operating costs.”

Vaddio Launches IP Video Streaming Support for ClearVIEW HD-USB Cameras

Vaddio, the global leader in robotic PTZ cameras and camera control systems, announces a major software update to the ClearVIEW HD-USB PTZ camera. In addition to the current USB streaming, version 2.0 allows for IP HD video streaming and remote PTZ camera control through the Ethernet network interface. Integrators now have the design flexibility to choose between USB or Network streaming – all in one device.

Streaming Protocols supported are Real Time Streaming Protocol (RTSP) and HTTP Live Streaming (HLS). Encoding for video will be H.264 (Main Profile) and the audio encoding will be AAC. Streaming adaptive network bandwidth allocation is supported with Adaptive Bitrate technology by detecting a user’s bandwidth and CPU capacity in real time and adjusting the quality of a video stream accordingly. This results in a smoother more life-like motion streaming experience. Supported resolutions include both SD and HD high definition resolutions up to 1080p.

“We have been asked by our integrators for a number of years to build IP video streaming into our camera systems,” explained CEO of Vaddio, Rob Sheeley. “We also knew that if we were to give them streaming, we would also have to give them remote IP PTZ camera control as well. Now they can control the camera from wherever they are watching the stream. This latest free software update to the ClearVIEW USB PTZ camera does all this and more.”

New D1000 Decoder From Visionary Solutions Optimizes IPTV Delivery

Professional Decoder Supports SDI, HDMI(R), and DVI Outputs, Ensuring Cost-Effective Delivery of High-Quality HD Video and Audio

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — June 3, 2013 — Internet Protocol television providers now have a powerful new technology solution for bringing high-definition video and audio content to their viewers. Visionary Solutions, Inc. (VSI) today announced the D1000, a new H.264 and MPEG-2 based decoder that supports SDI (3G/HD/SD), HDMI(R), and DVI outputs with resolutions from 480i up to 1080p60. The D1000 bridges the gap between expensive IRDs and consumer STBs, offering IPTV operators an end-to-end solution for streaming 1080p60 video and audio content affordably.

“The D1000 is an exciting innovation for the IPTV market, where delivering fast, best-in-class HD video and audio at a cost-effective price point is vital to success,” said Jordan Christoff, VSI president and co-founder. “As IPTV operators continuously strive to improve their video and audio output, the D1000 offers the perfect balance of reliability, flexibility, high performance, and quality.”

The D1000 supports VSI’s widely deployed encoder series, which supplies exceptional performance and superior picture quality. After receiving H.264 or MPEG-2 audio and video content from a VSI encoder, the decoder outputs the content in real time into a high-quality 1080p, 1080i, or 720p HD stream at the lowest possible bit rate. The high-performance decoder is also able to ensure exceptional audio quality by supporting a wide range of audio standards, including AAC, MPEG-1/2, and optionally AC3.

Utilizing the D1000, operators can efficiently deliver professional-quality HD video and audio over IP networks at a very reasonable price point. The D1000 decoder is ideal for a wide range of markets, including broadcast, entertainment, enterprise, education, healthcare, and government, and offers an unmatched level of flexibility when compared with existing decoding technologies.

“Since expanding into the IPTV arena in 2004, Visionary Solutions has proven to be a pioneer in real-time transport of video over IP networks, and the D1000 marks the next milestone in those efforts,” Christoff added.

The D1000 works seamlessly with all VSI encoders and features a high-density, compact design that enables it to be housed in the same MP1700 or MPP200 chassis system as other VSI blade encoders, dramatically reducing operational costs and rackspace requirements. Additionally, an HTTP API allows easy integration with third-party middleware systems.

VSI will demonstrate the advanced capabilities and features of the D1000 at InfoComm 2013, booth 2431, June 12-14 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla.

Arby’s New National Ad Campaign Shot on Blackmagic Cinema Camera

Blackmagic Design today announced that Glendale, CA based production and post house Fisher Film Works used Blackmagic Cinema Camera to film Arby’s recent “King’s Hawaiian Roast Beef Sandwich” commercial, a nationally syndicated co-promotion with Adult Swim. The television spot, which features an artist painting a picture of the sandwich, was also colored using Blackmagic Design’s DaVinci Resolve, the world’s most advanced color correction tool.

Gavin Fisher, founder and owner of Fisher Film Works, used Blackmagic Cinema Camera to shoot the commercial in less than one week. Shot in 1080HD in compressed Apple ProRes, Gavin was able to capture high quality images and bring them into his editing and color correction workflow without the need for transcoding, allowing for the most efficient workflow possible for the project.

“I knew the quality of the footage would be great, because I’ve used the Blackmagic Cinema Camera before,” said Gavin. “But the resulting footage still impressed me. The skin tones, the colors of the artwork on the wall, all of the images were amazing, and we were able to do a lot creatively with the footage in Resolve.”

Another advantage during the shoot was the camera’s unique design, which allowed Gavin to work within a very confined space.

“We filmed in a small studio because we were trying to get the look of a cable access painting show,” said Gavin. “We didn’t even have room for a dolly, but the director wanted some movement in the shots. In the end, we were able to use some sliders, which we wouldn’t have been able to do with a larger camera. The compact size of the Blackmagic Cinema Camera proved to be a big advantage for us.”

The director, Paul Cummings, cut the commercial in Final Cut Pro and handed it off to Gavin who imported it into DaVinci Resolve via XML for final color corrections. Once the final commercial was finished in Resolve, it was exported straight to the client for airing.

“The Log workflow in Resolve just goes hand in hand with the camera,” said Gavin. “We were going for a specific look, a super saturated, high end cable access look. By shooting in ProRes film mode, which meant the images from the camera were flat, and then grading the commercial in Resolve, it was super easy to get that look. I prefer Resolve over anything else I’ve used, especially when using the Blackmagic Cinema Camera. The workflow between the two is seamless.”

PROOF Provides Previs, Postvis and Visual Effects for Universal Pictures’ “Fast & Furious 6″

Los Angeles, CA, June 3, 2013 — Proof Inc., one of the film industry’s leading visualization houses, has provided Previs services to Universal Pictures’ “Fast & Furious 6,” which was released May 24, 2013, it was announced today. According to Proof Creative Director/Founder Ron Frankel, Proof provided previsualization for six sequences of “Fast & Furious 6,” which involved the creation of 40 minutes of original animation. Proof also provided post-vis services for the film, and it produced 200 visual effects shots.

.Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz, Producer, “Fast & Furious 6,” said, “The ‘Fast & Furious’ films are all about extreme action with real cars and real cameras. I’m a big believer in Previs. It’s the best way to develop the intense action that our fans expect long before anyone even shows up on set. We’ve been working with Alex Vegh and the team at Proof for years and they really have the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise dialed in.”
Proof’s Previs Supervisor Alex Vegh, who has been the Previs Supervisor for the second through the sixth entries of the “Fast & Furious” franchise, adds, “We were involved very early on this film with director Justin Lin in the development process, and stayed on until the end of the picture. I had the opportunity to work with Justin on developing the ideas for the action sequences and to create the action beats. We then animated the shots and designed the sequences in Previs. I took the Previs with me on set and had the chance to supervise some splinter unit scenes, which was very interesting and a lot of fun. Due to the escalated level and quick pace of the production of this film, I concurrently worked with teams on both Previs and Postvis. This was the first film where we used an all British crew in London – 20 people – as well as a team based in Los Angeles. I even traveled with the production when they went on location to the Canary Islands!”
Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson lead the returning cast of all-stars as the global blockbuster franchise built on speed races to its next continent in “Fast & Furious 6.” Reuniting for their most high-stakes adventure yet, fan favorites Jordana Brewster, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, John Ortiz and Elsa Pataky are joined by badass series newcomers Luke Evans and Gina Carano.
Building on the worldwide blockbuster success of “Fast Five” and taking the action, stunts and narrative to even greater heights, in “Fast & Furious 6” sees director Justin Lin back behind the camera for the fourth time. He is supported by longtime producers Neal H. Moritz and Vin Diesel, who welcome producer Clayton Townsend back to the series.
Founded in 2002 in Los Angeles by Ron Frankel, Proof Inc. is one Hollywood’s leading providers of high-quality visualization services for the feature film and live entertainment industries. The company has already been retained to provide Previs services for “Fast & Furious 7.”
In addition to “Fast & Furious 6,” the company’s other recent projects have included “The Hangover, Part 3,” “42,” “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters,” “The Amazing Spider-Man,” “The Hunger Games,” “Underworld: Awakening 3D,” “Fast Five,” and “The Green Hornet,” to name just a few. Upcoming projects include “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “R.I.P.D.,” “Riddick,” and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.”
From the start of development through to delivery, the talented digital artists of Proof help filmmakers tell their stories and realize their visions. Whether a major studio feature film, a large-scale architectural installation, a TV commercial, or a live concert, Proof’s unique blend of visual artistry and technical expertise ensures that the company’s work on any project is as accurate as it is evocative.
Proof specializes in four areas of creative services:
Previs: A collaborative process using 3D animation software and real-time computer graphics to generate preliminary versions of shots or sequences;
Virtual Production: Proof provides on-set visualization, the synchronization and compositing of live photography with 2D or 3D virtual elements, for immediate visual feedback;
Postvis: This is a creative process whereby filmmakers can direct the parts of their film that weren’t captured during photography because they were either impractical or impossible to get in camera;
Event Visualization: Proof’s artists have the ability to create accurate visualizations to test designs for any kind of event, ranging from a theme park ride to a fashion show, and from a concert to an urban scale multi-media projection.
