Turn Your Computer Screen Into a Movie Set With iStopMotion 3.1

    Puchheim, Germany – May 17, 2013 – iStopMotion 3.1, the latest upgrade to Boinx Software’s award-winning stop motion animation software, now includes a Screen Capture feature, requested by many users. Artists can easily capture frames from the screen to create stop motion animations or timelapse movies by pairing the software with illustration programs such as Photoshop or InDesign, or any other app, for example, to document the creation of a drawing. They can then export movies in Apple® ProRes format (if the codec is installed), and import directly into Final Cut Pro® X for further editing, without the need to transcode. iStopMotion 3.1 continues to be perfected with bug fixes for better functionality.
     
    The iStopMotion screen capture feature is exceptional. It is a real pleasure to watch the application in action,” comments Cody Creed, an art teacher from Manitoba, Canada who tested out the new screen capture capability in iStopMotion 3.1. “As an artist, I wish to share my process. This feature makes it easy to show how I create images from scratch in a dynamic and interesting way. I also find it works great in spaces. That way you can capture without the visual clutter of two applications at once. It has a great deal of potential, which will be realized when the art community gets their hands on it.”
     
    Creed has been using both the Mac and iPad versions of iStopMotion in the classroom for years and has students animate things like scientific processes and current events. He says the interactivity and ability to see certain processes sped up in a stop motion animation helps students better understand certain concepts.

    Charlie Collier, a 20-year-old Texas native, also uses iStopMotion for all of his stop motion animation needs. Most recently, he created a music video for singer/songwriter Lincoln Durham’s song “Ballad of a Prodigal Son,” using iStopMotion to animate handmade props and scenery perfectly to the music.
     
    I really like iStopMotion. It’s really helpful and that’s what I like about it – it’s not overly complicated, allows you to do some editing, and is effective without trying to be something it’s not,” says Collier. “You can import the audio track and see the waveform in the timeline. That was an awesome feature to have when I was animating Lincoln’s character to play along with the guitar. If it wasn’t for that feature, I’d be really angry.

    Clay Paky Sharpy Washes Join Fleetwood Mac on Tour

    Fleetwood Mac is back on the road and Clay Paky Sharpy Wash 330 fixtures have joined the iconic band on the Fleetwood Mac Live 2013 World Tour.

    The new tour, which began in Columbus on April 4 and will wrap in Scandinavia in October, marks the first for the band since 2009′s sold-out Unleashed tour. This year is also the 35th anniversary of their “Rumours” album, one of the most successful in recording history with sales in excess of 40 copies. It remained on top of the pop charts for more than 31 weeks and produced four Top Ten singles.

    Lighting designer Paul “Arlo” Guthrie of Minneapolis-based Toss Film + Design is Fleetwood Mac’s long-time lighting designer. “I have to cater to four different personalities (Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks) and bring them together as one team,” he explains. “For this show we have four big LCD panels and 32 Sharpy Washes on curved lighting pipes, some of them on the floor, some on the rigs and some in pods that come out. They hang on weird angles and move during the show – some are on 45, 90 and 120º angles. They’re well featured – the main workhorse washlight of the rig.”

    Clay Paky’s Sharpy Wash 330 is a compact, lightweight 330W washlight, with the luminous efficiency, graphic and optical performance of a 1000W fixture. It is extremely silent and quick and is fitted with a complete CMY color system, special colors, 6.5°-48° zoom, mechanical dimmer, beam shaping filter and motorized top-hat. It is an eco-friendly light, allowing considerable running and consumption cost savings.

    Guthrie says that he “tried to design a rig that moves and has dynamic elements so I can change the look of the show. I chose the Sharpy Washes because I needed something small and bright. I was curious to see if I could use them as a beam effect without any haze – the band doesn’t like to work in haze.”

    He discovered that “the beam reads really well in just the atmosphere. With their great wash capability they’re equally good as a tuning light that adds to the theatricality of the show.”

    According to Guthrie the Sharpy washes are “working great – exactly as promised. They’re just fantastic. I think I’ll keep them! George Masek at A.C.T Lighting was awesome with his support.”

    DATATON BRINGS ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY TO LIFE AT SWEDEN’S FOTOGRAFISKA

    Founded by brothers Jan and Per Broman, Fotografiska is Stockholm’s pioneering centre for the appreciation and advancement of the art of photography. Far more than simply a photographers’ gallery, Fotografiska is a cultural space that hosts lectures and workshops, inviting visitors to take a fresh look at the diversity and complexity of the photographed image.

    Through the Fotografiska Academy, the venue also acts as a location for educational courses aimed at those wanting to improve their knowledge of photography and their work as photographers.

    To round out its offering, Fotografiska acts as a social hub, offering indoor and outdoor cafés, hosting live-music events, and renting out a variety of event and conference spaces to third-party organisations.

    As part of its innovative approach to its subject, Fotografiska uses both of Dataton’s key product lines: the PICKUP audio guide system and WATCHOUT multi-display presentation software.

    “We’re always thinking about what makes a great experience, and ways in which we can complete that experience for the end user,” comments Jan Broman. “We want to offer people not just a space that gives them a chance to look at great photos, but which fulfils the needs of people who want to do more than simply be a visitor to a museum; of people who want to learn. That is really what Fotografiska is all about.”

    Daniel Bodenfors, Digital Editor at Fotografiska, works with both the PICKUP and WATCHOUT systems, and has witnessed the way in which they have enhanced the venue’s offering at first-hand. Explaining the use of PICKUP, he says:

    “As well as guided tours of Fotografiska, we also offer tours of our temporary exhibitions. For these, we give each photo a PICKUP microtag located next to the photo. If a visitor wants to know more about a particular photograph, they simply point their individual PICKUP at the photo, press the button, and the audio guide for that item begins playing through their headphones.

    “Recently we have been lucky enough to have some photographers record conversations with exhibition curators which we have then uploaded to the PICKUP system, so that visitors actually hear the creative background behind some of the images directly from the artist’s mouth, as it were, as they view each one.

    “The PICKUP system is incredibly intuitive to use, and its ability to store up to 100 hours of audio means we are never short of space for more information!”

    As well as conventional gallery spaces, Fotografiska also has a variety of conference and event spaces, of which the centrepiece is the Eventhallen or ‘F1’ as it is now known. Since January this year, the walls of this room have been used as a giant immersive projection screen. Using WATCHOUT, the images from the room’s projectors are seamlessly blended together and warped to correct for the geometry of the corners of the room.

    “With the help of WATCHOUT, this room can have just about any visual backdrop we choose,” says Bodenfors. “It can be something as simple as images of disco light-bulbs, or as complex as multiple images from one of our exhibitions being merged together and replayed in a pre-programmed, fully synchronised sequence.

    “Since we dressed the room in WATCHOUT we’ve used it for countless events, and the effects have been breathtaking. WATCHOUT is an excellent event tool that allows us to change the whole character of the room in seconds.”

    Fredrik Svahnberg, Marketing Director, Dataton, says that while the Fotografiska project is only the latest in a long line of visitor attractions to make good use of the company’s technology, it is one of the most inspiring:

    “To be able to listen directly to a photographer’s description of the image they have taken while viewing that image, and to be immersed in those images in new and exciting ways, both under the same roof, is really quite something. Fotografiska is at the forefront of enhancing our appreciation of photography and graphic art, and we are delighted that Dataton has been able to provide two different yet complementary product lines to assist the facility in achieving its creative goals.”

    For all its pioneering work with new technology, however, Fotografiska is continuing its journey with Dataton. Bodenfors concludes: “Our next step will be to integrate the two systems together, bringing PICKUP into the WATCHOUT event space so that we can have some truly interactive experiences.
