RHAPSODY IS FIRST DIGITAL MUSIC SERVICE TO SUPPORT THE RECORDING ACADEMY®’S “GIVE FANS THE CREDIT” INITIATIVE

Service to Include Credits for Songwriters, Background Performers, Producers and Engineers

LOS ANGELES (May 7, 2013) — As the music business gathered at the annual NARM and Digitalmusic.org’s Music Biz 2013 Conference today, The Recording Academy® — a membership organization internationally known for the GRAMMY Awards® and for advancing creators’ rights — and Rhapsody International, the original on-demand music service, announced today that Rhapsody will be the first digital music service to support The Academy’s “Give Fans The Credit” initiative.

“Give Fans The Credit” advocates for the inclusion of credits for songwriters, nonfeatured performers such as session musicians and backing vocalists, producers and engineers in digital music, as they are listed in liner notes that come with physical media. Currently, the only credits consumers are able to see in most digital services are the song title, album, and featured artist.

“Rhapsody listeners are avid music fans who value the craft of musicianship and recording, and they want to know who was involved in bringing a song to life,” said Jon Irwin, president, Rhapsody. “We have a responsibility to our listeners to back this initiative, and further, view the inclusion of more complete credits as a truly useful feature that will only deepen our listeners’ connection to their favorite artists and songs.”

“Since we launched the ‘Give Fans The Credit’ campaign, we’ve seen an outpouring of support from music makers and music lovers alike,” said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy. “Fans want more information about the tracks they like, and we applaud Rhapsody for taking a leadership role on this initiative. Putting credits in the hands of fans is the next step forward in guiding fans to music discovery, as they find new songs and artists based on songwriters, producers or band personnel. It is our hope that other digital music services will follow Rhapsody’s lead.”

As the original subscription music service, Rhapsody has led the industry in its focus on music curation, with more than 10 years of original editorial content, features and playlists designed to guide listeners through its massive catalog. The added information about key players behind the songs will provide an additional lens on music discovery for Rhapsody listeners.

While the full implementation of the credits will occur over the following months, Rhapsody has already begun to curate music collections based on producers, songwriters and sidemen within the Rhapsody service including GRAMMY® winners Dave Grohl, Pharrell Williams and Timbaland.

“We are eager to integrate this feature into our products,” said Irwin. “At Rhapsody we are always striving to connect fans and artists, and ‘Give Fans The Credit’ is one more way we can create a great music experience that helps us deliver on that promise.”

Neumann Microphones Help RUNA Make Celtic Roots Music Come Alive

Old Lyme, Conn. – May 8, 2013 – RUNA is a Celtic roots band that fuses music from Ireland, Scotland, Canada and the U.S., creating refreshing contemporary arrangements of traditional, Celtic-based material. Now an internationally touring band that routinely plays at large national concert halls such as Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, the band quickly emerged from its humble beginnings playing coffee houses and dive bars in Philadelphia just four years ago.

RUNA’s live presentation is rich in its authentic Celtic instrumentation and dynamic storytelling through song — and is made all the more sonically engaging by the band’s choice of vocal microphone: the Neumann KMS 104 Plus and KMS 105 handheld condensers. This month on May 17th, the band returns ‘home’ to Philadelphia to sing the National Anthem before 40,000 some odd baseball fans at Citizens Bank Park to celebrate the Philadelphia Phillies’ Irish Heritage Night.

Lead singer Shannon Lambert-Ryan explains the band’s transition to Neumann on stage: “I had been using a popular competitor’s mic and someone suggested I try a Neumann,” she says. “We tried it at a gig and there was just no comparison. I heard better tone, warmth and clarity while singing through the KMS 104 Plus. It was like singing against silk, and I cannot speak highly enough about it.”

For RUNA, a band that prides itself on connecting with audiences through dramatic and lyrically vibrant performances, microphone clarity and sensitivity go a long way: “The Neumann KMS microphones pick up all of the nuances of the human voice,” observes Lambert-Ryan. “It provides the definition and clarity to cut through the mix, but also has a huge, warm tone. I’ve noticed that other microphones deliver great clarity, but often sound too thin and don’t have enough sonic definition.”

Over the last two years, RUNA — a five piece band consisting of Shannon Lambert-Ryan on vocals, Fionán de Barra on guitar, Cheryl Prashker on percussion, Dave Curley on mandolin/vocals, and Maggie Estes on fiddle — has been recognized with many industry awards and accolades. This year, they captured nominations in the Independent Music Awards for their song “Amhrán Mhuighinse” (Somewhere Along the Road), in the Irish Music Awards for Best Female Vocalist, and in the past have received multiple accolades from the Montgomery Buck Music Awards.

RUNA’s other vocalist, Dave Curley, has been using the Neumann KMS 105. “He was really struggling to find the right vocal mic that works for his voice, which is very gentle and has a different timbre than mine,” recalls Lambert-Ryan. “The first time he sang through the KMS 105 onstage, he said, ‘Wow – what is this?’ It was very smooth and had such a nice balance.”

For Lambert-Ryan, the Neumann KMS 104 Plus has given her more control over her vocal dynamics on stage: “Since we don’t have a bunch of electronic instruments happening in our style of music, the vocals tend to be much more ‘exposed.’ Therefore you need to hear all the nuances that are occurring,” she says. “With the KMS 104 Plus, Neumann has delivered here.”

Bexel Launches 4K Solution with Evertz Dreamcatcher

Purchase Adds Cutting-Edge Slow-Motion Replay Technology for Sports and Live Broadcasts

(BURBANK, CA) - Bexel, a unit of the Vitec Group's Services Division and a leading worldwide provider of broadcast services and solutions, has purchased two Dreamcatcher systems from Evertz, a leading global manufacturer of broadcast equipment. The acquisition serves as a cornerstone for Bexel's new 4K solutions, which provide turnkey packages that will be available to augment any major sporting event or live production broadcast.

Dreamcatcher represents the next generation in slow-motion replay technology and offers real-world 4K benefits. The product provides enhanced storytelling capabilities by allowing a production team to capture an event from all angles, without ever missing a moment of action. When 4K cameras are used, Dreamcatcher's zoom capability lets broadcasters zero in on the action and extract an HD image from a larger 4K frame. This high resolution zoom ability allows broadcasters to enhance the narrative and definitive coverage of close calls at sporting events. When used in conjunction with Evertz' patent-pending tracking feature, the 4K zoom functionality enables a totally unique replay experience. Dreamcatcher's proprietary Mosaic function synchronizes multiple angles that can be played out with the press of a single button, allowing a captured event to be shown from brand new perspectives.

Tom Dickinson, CTO of Bexel, comments, "Bexel is a leader in building server systems for a myriad of sporting events, and the addition of Dreamcatcher is a natural expansion of our offerings - and it's ready for 4K now. Dreamcatcher will be available to our customers as part of a customized solution that will deliver an elegant, streamlined 4K package that can be integrated into a sports production easily, and play a key role in providing 4K replay for live events. Dreamcatcher is a great storytelling tool that employs state-of-the-art technology to allow broadcasters to use 4K to its fullest extent on an HD production."

Evertz' Joe Cirincione, VP Sales-U.S. Sports and Entertainment, who has been on over a dozen shoots including the Super Bowl and Daytona 500, says, "Dreamcatcher allows an audience to experience an event like never before, and we know that it will make a perfect addition to Bexel's offerings. We have enjoyed a long and successful relationship with Bexel, and we are very pleased they have chosen Dreamcatcher."

"We engage many Evertz products in our systems and solutions," concludes Dickinson. "This is a logical expansion for Bexel and the Dreamcatcher's features augment the sports experience in exciting new ways, and for live content replay and multi-screen output for award shows as well as other live events. We're thrilled to add this to our fleet of solutions."

Fluid Turns the Tables on Customer Service with Advance America

Fluid Editor John “JP” Piccolo recently teamed up with Station Films Director Sam Cadman via agency Erwin Penland to tackle the business of customer service for a commercial campaign to promote Advance America.

The campaign captures the unscripted reactions of customers approaching a deliberately disrespectful hot dog vendor. JP crafts Cadman’s expansive footage into several :30s presenting a closer look at the confusion of each customer.

“I had a great time going through all the footage, watching the different ways people reacted to the situation,” Piccolo said. “Sam shot for a full day, capturing so many bits that I had five times the usual number of :30s to present to the agency in the first rough-cut screening, giving the agency and director a chance to pick their favorites.”

Erwin Penland teamed up with JP because of his subtle comedic editing style and his proximity to Fluid’s talented affiliates, Butter Music and Sound and Mr Bronx Audio Post. “JP found the funniest and most awkward moments in the footage and created great hidden camera spots while working together with our music and sound design guys. We were the perfect shop for these spots,” noted Fluid Senior Producer Leanne Diamond.

— New remote production truck is equipped with a 5.1 surround array of Genelec 8130A Digtal Monitors and a SE7261A subwoofer to match the Genelec monitoring in place at the ministries’ own post-production facility —

NATICK, MA, May 6, 2013 — Kenneth Copeland Ministries recently rolled out its first high-definition remote production truck, fitted with a 5.1 surround sound monitoring array from Genelec, the world’s longstanding pioneer in active monitoring. The system consists of 8130A Digital Monitors and an SE7261A Active DSP subwoofer, part of the Genelec GLM.SE™ system with AutoCal™ Self-Calibration System, which is used to optimize the monitoring array in the truck’s audio area. The new remote production vehicle travels to ministry events, recording the messages for broadcast, streaming and post-production media such as DVDs and MP3 downloads.

The Genelec monitors aboard the new truck also serve to create a seamless and consistent monitoring environment in conjunction with the ministries’ Audio Production Suite, designed by the Russ Berger Design Group and located on the Ministries’ 1,200-acre campus in Ft. Worth, Texas. There, three Genelec 1037C Tri-amplified Monitors form the L-C-R array, supported by four Genelec 1032A Active 2-way audio monitors for the surrounds. (These are used in two pairs; one set is aimed at the audio operator and the other at the producer/client seating.) The post facility also utilizes a Genelec 7073A Active Subwoofer. The truck is also used as a control room when the Copelands record broadcasts at the ministries’ television studio on the campus; the vehicle is housed in a neighboring truck bay that is connected via fiber to the facility.

“We now have complete consistency of monitoring throughout our production chain, from remote truck to home base,” observes Ralph Robb, Senior Audio Engineer at Kenneth Copeland Ministries. Robb says the Genelec 8130A’s offer him a monitoring experience that is superior to other monitors. “The Genelecs are a professional tool that are excellent for letting me hear the nuances in the sound,” he says. “This is all about the voice, the spoken word, the message, and my ability to separate it from any distracting sound or noise around it. When Mr. and Mrs. Copeland speak in a large arena or hall, the PA system is going to get into the recording. We use lavaliere microphones, but they are omnidirectional – they give us a smoother overall response, but they also pick up more sound from the room. I need to be able to carve the frequencies we don’t want out of the recording, and the Genelecs are better at that than any other speaker.”
