Buster Beefs Up Creative Talent Roster: Joseph Kiely Named Executive Creative Director, On-Air Design, While Neville Burtis is Named Executive Creative Director for BusterINK
Los Angeles, CA, May 6, 2013 — Design and animation studio Buster has beefed up its creative talent roster by naming Joseph Kiely as the company’s new Executive Creative Director for motion graphics, and Neville Burtis as Executive Creative Director of the agency’s print, outdoor and digital division, BusterINK. Both men report to Buster’s Chief Creative Officer / Executive Producer Jonas Morganstein. Brad Roth and Mark Feldstein, principals of Stun Creative, the parent company of Buster, made the announcement.

As Buster’s new Executive Creative Director, Joseph Kiely returns home to Los Angeles, having spent the last ten years building and leading the design team at Viewpoint Creative in Boston. Kiely joins Buster’s on air design and motion graphics group, lending his strategic branding experience, and promotional acumen to all facets of the business. He brings a unique mix of design and conceptual big picture thinking to the Buster team.
While at Viewpoint, Kiely supervised high-profile brand makeovers for HBO and HGTV as well as consumer brands Staples, Lowe’s and Timberland.
Kiely began his career in the music industry, working with such iconic music brands and artists as Neil Diamond, Dwight Yoakam, The Grammy Awards, and Warner Music. He later transitioned into advertising, and while based in Chicago worked with several agencies including DDB, on behalf of consumer brands such as Dove, Whirlpool and State Farm.

HOLLYWOOD—Things were wild on Stage 12 at Hollywood Center Studios recently as a pair of gray wolves, two grizzly bears, a leopard, a lion, an African elephant and other exotic animals stopped by for their close-ups. The occasion was a 3-day shoot conducted by GreenScreen Animals, a Santa Monica supplier of specialty stock footage, that was seeking to add to its one-of-a-kind collection of more than 3000 stock images of wild animals.
There is a huge demand for stock images of wild creatures, especially hard to come by green screen shots, that are ideal for special effects purposes. While many of the virtual studio solutions currently on the market are expensive or technically complex, the NEON trackless virtual studio solution is a user-friendly system that simply requires software running on a PC. NEON supports up to five live HD/SD camera inputs and can be controlled via Hybrid’s Ozone software controller or through BPI I/O production switchers, such as Broadcast Pix, Sony, or Grass Valley production switchers.
Rather than camera tracking and calibration technology, the Neon 3D virtual studio solution enables virtual camera movements in real-time from fixed cameras on set. Despite its simplicity, the 3D virtual scenes are photo-realistic and anti-aliased. Users can either use Neon’s set design tools, or import virtual sets created using 3D Max, Maya, Softimage, or other common modeling software.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – May 6, 2013 – NY based independent VFX and design house, Phosphene, continues the expansion of its core creative team with the addition of CG Supervisor Vance Miller, Lead Digital Artist Eddie Porter, and Lead Compositor Scott Winston. In addition, Lead Digital Artist Aaron Raff has been promoted to VFX Supervisor.

Vance Miller, CG Supervisor
For over 25 years, Vance Miller has been an integral part of the immense growth and expansion of the visual effects world in New York. Early on in his career, Miller took to CG work, and by 1995 was serving as Vice President of CGI Operations for NY-based Pixel Light Communications. Soon after realizing he craved a more hands-on approach, Miller went on to become one of the most coveted freelance animator/modeler and lighters in New York. Over the next ten years he worked primarily in the commercial and gaming worlds for clients including AT&T, MTV, Best Buy, McDonalds, Jeep, Tropicana, and Verizon.
However, his heart was always in long-form where he says “there is more time for R&D and creative exploration,” so in the mid-00’s, Miller made the transition to film and television work where he took on the role of CG technical director and lighting/rendering specialist. More recently, Miller has been focused on character animation.
After collaborating with Phosphene partners Vivian Connolly and John Bair for many years, Miller was brought on staff to help Phosphene continue to expand its CG pipeline, with greater focus on character animation and 3D environments.
John Bair said of his new CG supervisor: “I have collaborated with Vance for over 10 years. He has an unmatched combination of creative talent and technical savvy with a real eye for innovative solutions to CG challenges.” Prior to joining Phosphene’s staff, Miller collaborated on many Phosphene projects including Tower Heist, The Adjustment Bureau, Salt and Doubt.
Eddie Porter, Lead Digital Artist
Eddie Porter got his start in 2006 as Lead Matte Painter/Background Designer on “Fat Guy Stuck in Internet” for Adult Swim. Following this project, Porter briefly left film and television to pursue opportunities working in the commercial world. Between 2006 and 2011, he had a range of roles from development and previs work to overseeing the completion of full ups on over 100 commercials. During this time, Porter remained passionate about working in film, and dedicated his free time to working on short films, including: Mean to Me, and Portal: No Escape.
After leaving the commercial world in 2011, Porter broke into feature work and episodic television again, working as a visual effects artist and expanding his knowledge of title design. As a freelancer, Porter was able to work on many of the exciting television shows and films that have come through New York City in the past few years including, Smash, The Borgias, So Undercover, Tower Heist, and Rampart, for which he was credited as Lead Digital Compositor. Porter also contributed work to the title design and compositing of the 3D credits for Hugo.
Scott Winston, Lead Compositor
Scott Winston is known in the industry as an extraordinary technical talent, as well as an incredible teacher and mentor to young artists. Winston was 17 when he began his first internship at a stop-motion studio. Having realized his passion for this work very early on, he went on to train as a traditional animator at New York’s School of Visual Arts and worked in traditional animation before transitioning to 3D animation and compositing work.
As a freelancer, Winston had the opportunity to work as both a compositor and as an on-set supervisor, contributing to more than 50 projects, including The Da Vinci Code, SeeMore’s Playhouse, and Sinatra: His Voice, His World, His Way. Between 2003 and 2006, Winston lent his talents as an educator to NYU, teaching the theories and practices of visual effects work to undergraduates and graduate students. Winston has been collaborating with John Bair and Vivian Connolly since 2005 on projects including The Adjustment Bureau, Salt, and Mildred Pierce, for which Winston was nominated for an Emmy as part of the Phosphene team.
Aaron Raff, VFX Supervisor
Phosphene’s Lead VFX Artist Aaron Raff is now the company’s second in-house VFX Supervisor. Raff, who has been working with Bair since 2008, has supervised Treme, John Turturro’s Fading Gigolo, and is hard at work in New Orleans on the set of HBO’s currently untitled series directed by Cary Fukunaga. Jess Levin, producer of both the Fukunaga project and Treme said of Raff’s talents, “Aaron has that perfect balance of creative and technical knowledge that we’ve long valued in Phosphene’s John Bair, and his collaborative attitude, fast-thinking, and ability to integrate post-production VFX expertise with on-set production needs has made him a great asset!”
In addition to Owner/Executive Producer Vivian Connolly and Owner/VFX Supervisor John Bair, Vance Miller, Eddie Porter and Scott Winston join a core Phosphene creative team that includes Aaron Raff, Digital artist Greg Radcliffe, Associate Producer Ariela Rotenberg, Senior Producer Renuka Ballal, and Producers Lea Prainsack and Beck Dunn.

For Phosphene, 2013 marks the release of sci-fi thriller “Europa Report,” a contemporary space adventure, developed by Wayfare Entertainment and Misher Films, with acclaimed Ecuadorian director Sebastián Cordero at the helm, the cast includes “District 9’s” Sharlto Copley, Michael Nyqvist (“Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”), Anamaria Marinca (“4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days”) and Daniel Wu. The film, which leans heavily on visual story-telling, boasts over 200 VFX shots by Phosphene.

Burbank, CA … Mojave Audio, a company founded by David Royer (known for his work with ribbon microphones), and its sister company Royer Labs, a leading manufacturer of high quality ribbon microphones, recently participated in the Folk Alliance International 2013 conference held at the Delta Chelsea Hotel in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Folk Alliance International exists to foster and promote traditional, contemporary, and multicultural folk music and dance and related performing arts. As part of this year’s activities, Mojave Audio and Royer Labs established a ‘Pop up Studio’ as a means of demonstrating the companies’ products and to give conference attendees the opportunity to experience the capabilities of these products first hand.
