Cinedeck Teams With Industry-leading Partners To Demonstrate File-based Workflows at NAB 2013

CINEDECK SPOTLIGHTS “YOUR WORKFLOW, YOUR WAY…” AT NAB 2013 (Booth #SL14911)

Cinedeck LLC (www.cinedeck.com), pioneering developer of capture systems for motion picture and broadcast production, will spotlight “Your Workflow, Your Way”, as it demonstrates versatile, file-based, multi-stream acquisition-to-post, video ingest and playback options at NAB 2013, (Cinedeck Booth #SL14911).

Cinedeck recognizes that each production follows its own distinctive path, and that no two workflows are the same. At NAB 2013, the company will demonstrate how its Cinedeck MX and RX3G recorders – with their vast range of I/O connectivity, support for the widest range of codecs and file formats, and simple user interface ¬– deliver highly-flexible options for live, on-set, post-production and broadcast environments.

Cinedeck is teaming up with Big Foot Mobile, a leading builder of on-set/DIT carts, SAN/NAS manufacturers Facilis and Oceantides, digital film production software developer Pomfort, and on-set grading vendor Colorfront. Also presented will be the Pronology ingest and content management system.

At the show, Cinedeck will demonstrate multiple camera and video feeds being encoded via Cinedeck MX and RX3G to the Oceantides’ QOS and Facilis Terrablock SAN systems, with the ability to pre-grade this material in real-time using Pomfort LiveGrade. Footage from the Cinedeck MX and RX3G will be further refined using Colorfront On-Set Dailies, running on a Retina MacbookPro. The final dailies will be reviewed on a Modbook Pro pen-and-tablet computer, and delivered for editing on Avid Media Composer.

Currently in use on major broadcast events and multi-cam productions, Pronology’s asset management system will be shown with Cinedeck recorders at the center of ingest and playout operations. Cinedeck will also show several remote control options, and how the MX and RG3G can ingest, playback and transcode content from flash cards and other external recording devices.

Cinedeck will also show further advancements in the flexibility and ease-of-use of the Cinedeck MX and RX3G with the latest v4.2 software release. Highlights include an improved user-interface, clip and subclip playlist capabilities, segment record (user-defined chunking), more flexible file, folder and project management, and the introduction of ARRIRAW recording and new LUT shaders.

CINEDECK SHOWCASES GROUNDBREAKING NEW FEATURES FOR CINEDECK RX3G AND MX RECORDERS AT NAB 2013

Innovations include support for ARRIRAW, CinemaDNG, CanonRAW, JPEG 2000, OpenEXR and ACES, plus significant operational enhancements

Cinedeck LLC (www.cinedeck.com), pioneering developer of capture systems for motion picture and broadcast production, will showcase a string of ground-breaking capabilities for its dual-channel RX3G and quad-channel MX record, playback and monitoring systems, at NAB 2013 (Cinedeck Booth #SL14911).

Cinedeck MX - quad channel recorder

With these new capabilities, available in forthcoming software upgrades, Cinedeck will significantly expand the toolsets of its flagship recording systems for on-set and post-production professionals working in digital cinema, episodic broadcast and live event production. Highlights include support for a wave of new cameras and formats including ARRIRAW, CinemaDNG, CanonRAW, JPEG 2000, OpenEXR, LUT shaders and ACES color workflow, plus a range of trailblazing advances that streamline and speed the transfer of recorded media into post production.

Extended Camera and Format support:
Cinedeck RX3G and MX will support the capture and realtime playback of ARRIRAW. Forthcoming upgrades will also support JPEG 2000, now the standard for DCI-compliant “cinema packages”, CinemaDNG, Canon RAW and OpenEXR, the high dynamic-range (HDR) image file format developed originally by Industrial Light & Magic, and now generally available to the industry.

LUT Shaders:
Cinedeck will show the import and application of non-destructive, viewing LUTs (Look-Up Tables) to recorded content, via the on-board displays on the RX3G and MX, as well as to output monitors. This capability is especially useful when a production is shooting RAW unprocessed images.

ACES Color workflow:
Cinedeck will be supporting the IIF/ACES workflow, developed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Science and Technology Council to establish a standard format to maintain color accuracy for digital production and post.

Operational Enhancements:
Playlisting – Cinedeck recorders effectively have a simple, non-linear editor, built-in to the interface, enabling a range of new playback and review capabilities. These allow users to select multiple clips to be played in a desired sequence with a clean cut between clips, and Cinedeck’s playlist function allows the arrangement and re-arrangement of clips in any order and from any folder. Additionally, the playlist functions enable users to set in and out points on a clip to create sub-clips, which can be included in a playlist. Multiple sub-clips can be created from a single clip. Playlists can include different types of clips and will soon support mixed frame rates.

Enhanced RS422 Deck Control – Cinedeck RX3G and MX have long had basic RS422 capability allowing them to be controlled as a player by external devices. The latest enhancements include the ability for external devices to control the RX3G and MX as recorders, effectively allowing the user to create assemble-edits in a file-based world. Additionally Cinedeck RX3G and MX will be able to directly control other machines in a “machine-to-machine” editing mode where the Cinedeck is the recorder or the player.

Segment Record – also known as “user-defined chunking”, Segment Record allows long recordings to be split into segments of specific shorter duration. During recording, each time the specified duration is reached, the current file is closed and the next segment file begins. Previous segments can be fully-accessed for playing and copying, etc.. Additionally, breaking large recordings into smaller pieces allows storage with file size limits to be utilized such as FAT32 drives.

Future developments:
Cinedeck will also preview a range of further enhancements, set to ship later in 2013.

Insert Edit – the RX3G and MX will be the first file-based recorders to support true Insert Editing of video/audio from a source to an existing MOV or MXF file, whether that source is a tape deck, non-linear editor such as Avid or FCP, or another file.

Time Delay Playback – FIFO (First In First Out) – this capability is commonly used in broadcast and network operations for applications such as back-up channel playout and live program corrections. Cinedecks will have the capability for user-programmed time-delay playback of incoming signals.

Edit While Record (EWC) – also known as “growing files”, this allows users to access an ongoing recording, for playing and editing in near realtime, enabling many concurrent operations to occur before a program has even finished.

Cinedeck will also release new control applications. Currently, Cinedeck recorders have a TCP/IP based, multi-machine control interface for the Windows platform, which manages control and settings for up to 24 Cinedeck channels. Coming soon will be an updated multi-machine interface for PC, Mac as well as iOS and Android mobile devices.

CINEDECK USERS APPLAUD TAPELESS PRODUCTIVITY GAINS

Cinedeck file-based recorders deliver significant time and money savings for major episodic TV shows, live events and houses of worship

Cinedeck LLC (www.cinedeck.com), pioneering developer of capture systems for motion picture and broadcast production, today reported how major broadcasters, production companies, rental facilities and houses of worship are all reaping significant productivity rewards after implementing Cinedeck solid-state recorders in tapeless workflows across episodic TV, live and mobile OB productions.

Bravo Channel’s popular culinary show Top Chef, FX Networks’ hit sitcom Anger Management, reality-TV giant Bunim/Murray Productions, multiple children’s series on Nickelodeon, plus live shows including The Rolling Stones NY Concerts and PBS’ Live At Lincoln Center: American Songbook, have all used Cinedeck recorders at the heart of their workflows. More will follow as new customers for Cinedeck’s quad-channel MX include NBC Universal, Madison Square Garden, while Apple, MTV and CNN have purchased dual-channel RX systems.

The production and post teams on FX Networks’ hit comedy series Anger Management have the challenge of delivering 90 shows over a two-year period. At the heart of the production are a trio of dual-channel Cinedeck RX recorders, which streamline the workflow by eliminating physical tape and traditional ingest processes. Crucially, the Cinedecks are configured to record four channels of DNxHD175X directly to ISIS, Avid’s shared storage system, enabling the show’s post team to review takes and commence editing within minutes of a scene being shot.

“Most sitcoms shoot three episodes per month. We’re doing double that,” says Anger Management associate producer, Howard Brock. “We need the efficiency to edit as soon as we shoot, and Cinedeck gives us that. We just literally drag-and-drop files, let ISIS index them, and it takes no time at all. The days of realtime ingest are history. We’re probably saving one day every shooting day on ingest alone.”

Bunim/Murray Productions experienced similar benefits when it used multiple Cinedeck RXs for the multi-cam production of Stars In Danger: The High Dive, a two-hour special for Fox Broadcasting Network. It was the first time the company had used Cinedeck technology.
“Mobile OB productions cost thousands of dollars per hour. Normally, you would have to wait as the media is copied off a server or tape onto a hard drive, with equipment and labor costs racking up,” says Mark Raudonis, senior VP post, Bunim/Murray Productions. “With the Cinedeck, you just don’t have those worries. It’s cheaper than tape, and since you’re recording in a native codec, there’s no transcoding needed. When you see these processes side-by-side, you realize what a major step forward the tapeless workflow really is.”

Vendata Solutions, based in Van Nuys, CA, has deployed Cinedeck RX recorders on a variety of Nickelodeon shows, including the new comedy series Sam & Cat and Haunted Hathaways. Cinedeck RXs were also used previously on the slapstick sci-fi series Marvin Marvin and the sitcom See Dad Run.

“File-based workflows are taking off in live and episodic production, and the Cinedeck RX fits right into the existing rack infrastructure that tapedecks have traditionally occupied,” says Vendata’s CEO Scott Heames. “The RXs ability to record master and/or proxy copies on separate channels in a wide variety of codecs, plus the SSD internal record and connectivity options for multiple write destinations add up to a lot of flexibility in how they can be deployed. Compared to tape, Cinedeck RX delivers dramatic savings in time – editors and producers are thrilled.”

Bellevue Baptist Church, based in Memphis Tennessee, is spearheading its transition from SD to full HD production and post with four dual-channel Cinedeck RXs at the heart of its tapeless workflow. The Cinedecks record three services of worship every Sunday, along with additional productions throughout the year. Each Cinedeck is connected to a 24TB Facilis Terrablock SAN via Gigabit Ethernet. This results in dual copies of the media, and enables editorial to commence work on the line cut as soon as services end.

Bellevue Baptist Worship Center

“Cinedeck RX is perfect for us as we transition from SD to HD production and post because, unlike other systems, it supports both workflows in the same device,” says video editor Noah Sidhom at Bellevue Baptist Media. “As the RXs connect directly to our SAN, the ingest time for editorial now takes just a matter of minutes, rather than hours with tape, and we get more time to fine-tune the final edit. Ultimately, we can finish productions to a much higher-standard than we have in the past, and in a lot less time.”

Production-services company Remote Digital Media Inc, New Jersey, has supported a range of broadcast and corporate productions for MTV, mtvU, CBS, Food Network, PBS, TED Talks, AOL and Vevo, with its Cinedeck RXs, and also integrated multiple RXs with ISIS, Avid’s shared-storage system for ABC’s Glasshouse reality-TV series. One of its most recent projects was PBS’ Live At Lincoln Center: American Songbook, starring Josh Groban and Kristin Chenoweth.

“As we have so many different clients, each with different workflows, we have to be format agnostic,” says Sandor Bondorowsky, president of Remote Digital Media Inc. “With Cinedeck we know that whatever platform and codec the client decides to edit on, we can accommodate their request. The ability to connect Cinedecks to SAN systems is a major advance, as this eliminates the need to ingest or transfer media completely. Obviously, not every show needs to edit as soon as they capture, but now they can if they want to.”
Video equipment rental company, SIM Digital, recently deployed a pair of Cinedeck RX’s in a tapeless workflow on YTV’s episodic children’s TV show Life With Boys, and this success has resulted in the company winning further TV shows with the RX.

“The paradigm has changed. There’s a growing clamor amongst content producers to get rid of videotape completely and Cinedeck is a great VTR replacement technology,” says Brian McSweeny?, VP Post/Facilities, SIM Digital Toronto. “Lightbulbs go on whenever we show the RX. There’s no voodoo – it’s simple to demonstrate, and producers quickly realize it will save them time, effort and money as there’s absolutely no need to digitize anymore.”

VISTA Installs Front Porch Digital’s Migration and Content Storage Management System

Front Porch Digital’s CSM and Migration Suite Enables VISTA to Offer Online Archiving and Content Management Services

LOUISVILLE, Colo. — April 5, 2013 — Front Porch Digital, the global leader in cloud-based content storage management (CSM) solutions, today announced that global media solutions service provider VISTA Worldlink (formerly VISTA Satellite Communications) has installed a complete CSM and migration suite that includes an advanced DIVArchive(R) CSM system, a DIVAdirector(R) media asset manager (MAM), a SAMMAsolo migration appliance, and access to the LYNXSM cloud-based disaster recovery (DR) and media asset storage service. With the new system in place, VISTA now includes online archival service and management in its portfolio of services available to clients around the world.

“Many of our clients had been asking about digital archiving, disaster recovery, and tapeless workflows, so we decided to put a system in place that would give them a customizable way to organize and manage their asset libraries online,” said VISTA President Roy Liemer. “By offering content storage management to our clients, we’re taking something that has typically been a capital purchase and turning it into an economical service. Our service supports all of a customer’s locations without the expense of multiple location-specific capital investments. With secure access to VISTA, users have instant online access to their content from anywhere in the world.”

VISTA serves a wide variety of clients with many different types of content and differing CSM requirements. Using Front Porch Digital’s CSM solution, VISTA’s service enables the customer to digitize and archive each individual asset in a single pass, thus preserving the value of the content and the original asset. The SAMMA process moves the unprotected content from videotape to digital files, creating preservation and intermediate (edit) masters, as well as proxy and XML metadata files. SAMMAsolo delivers the files to DIVArchive for management and protection and, at the same time, delivers proxies and content metadata to DIVAdirector for online access.

“A lot of what we do is time-sensitive, so it’s important to do it as quickly as possible,” Liemer said. “Whereas before it would have taken multiple passes to process a given piece of content, now we can process content more efficiently — whether it’s a live event or recorded material — because the system performs multiple processes simultaneously and automatically, which saves us both time and manpower and meets our clients’ needs for urgency.”

The DIVAdirector MAM offers a browser-based search interface for keyword searching of client archives. Search results are viewable using the archive proxies, allowing authorized users to see the video before ordering restoration. Clients order the content for restoration via DIVAdirector, which triggers DIVArchive to deliver the restored content to FTP sites or to specific areas within VISTA for copying to hard drives or other physical media.

With LYNX, VISTA offers clients an additional level of library protection via a hosted, off-site content protection service. Content that has been migrated by VISTA’s SAMMAsolo and managed by its DIVArchive CSM can be automatically replicated to LYNX, or VISTA can ship data tapes to the LYNX site. Depending on client requirements, VISTA can also use LYNX and DIVAdirector together as the access and distribution point for client content.

Front Porch Digital’s CSM and migration suite met all of VISTA’s requirements for a complete, robust CSM solution — the most important of these requirements being reliability, service, and scalability. The CSM system has the flexibility to integrate with VISTA’s existing MAM system, and it provides a customizable, intuitive interface with processes and actions that are familiar to clients. The technology is backward-compatible and flexible enough to evolve and grow with VISTA’s needs.

“Front Porch Digital has supplied VISTA with an end-to-end solution that has allowed it to expand its business into content preservation and library management — a new endeavor,” said Mike Knaisch, president and CEO of Front Porch Digital. “VISTA started with the cost-effective suite to launch its service, knowing that our solutions can expand to any size required to match growth.”

Front Porch Digital will display its products at the 2013 NAB Show in booths SU3602 and SU3605. More information about Front Porch Digital products is available at fpdigital.com.

CACHE-A UNVEILS TRAILBLAZING ARCHIVING FEATURES AT NAB 2013

Fast simultaneous LTFS copies and operational enhancements make Cache-A archiving even more productive for media and entertainment users

Cache-A Corporation (www.cache-a.com), manufacturer of award-winning archiving appliances for the media and entertainment industries, will unveil a set of new, trailblazing productivity features that make archiving even faster and more efficient, as it debuts its complete range of LTO-6 LTFS appliances, at NAB 2013 (Cache-A Booth #SL11109), Las Vegas.

Cache-A flagship Pro-Cache6

Cache-A will premiere its complete LTO-6 product family at NAB 2013: desktop Prime-Cache6, flagship Pro-Cache6, high-performance Power-Cache, and flexible Library 24/48 automation systems. With the introduction of LTO-6, Cache-A is also unleashing a brand new set of industry-leading features that significantly boost productivity in archive operations.

“Read once/write multiple” – simultaneous high-speed LTO-tape duplication:
Cache-A will showcase “Read Once/write multiple”, a unique, high-speed, LTO-tape copying capability. This groundbreaking advance allows archivists to make concurrent duplicate LTFS tape copies, rather than sequential copies, delivering dramatic boosts to productivity and vital time-savings. With this feature, the Pro-Cache model can create two simultaneous LTFS tape copies, and the Power-Cache model can create up to four simultaneous copies. This dramatically improves the workflow and speeds up the delivery of copies for production, post production, main archive and offsite disaster recovery.

“The really powerful thing about the way Cache-A has implemented multiple, simultaneous duplicate tapes is that the content on the source is only read once from network attached volumes or direct attached storage,” said Ken Fuhrman, VP of Engineering for Cache-A, “This means that without any additional strain on storage and networking resources Cache-A can deliver multiple copies at close to the same speed as a single copy.”

“Discovery” and quick metadata access on LTFS tapes:
Based on collaborative work with Discovery Channel, Cache-A has developed the ability to format LTFS tapes such that metadata.xml files are automatically placed in the index partition, which allows Cache-A tapes to conform to the “Discovery Communications File Based Footage Delivery Policy v2.0” specification. This metadata file can be easily restored at a later date, slashing access time for that information. Custom policies allow users to specify their own files for this special treatment.

Also new for NAB 2013 are several powerful features that Cache-A has been shipping in its current release, including:

Command Queue features:
Cache-A’s powerful new command queue feature lets users stack-up archive and restore operations for each LTO drive in their library. The command queue can now be edited and prioritized, delivering maximum flexibility in automated archive/restore operations. New dialogs also confirm the status of archive/restore operations and improve management of Cache-A Library systems.

Email Notifications
Cache-A has introduced a host of new operational tools and improvements, which increase archiving efficiency even further. Users can now receive e-mail notifications upon the completion of archive/restore sessions on their smartphone or computer, giving them the freedom to engage in other activities, and the confidence that they will be emailed upon successful completion, or advised in case of any error.

MD5 checksums:
As part of its continuous quest to provide users with the highest confidence in the integrity of the archives they manage, Cache-A has added calculation of MD5 checksums of each file in an archive session. This makes possible a range of double-checks to give users and even higher level of assurance in the data accuracy.

“Media and entertainment users can store more and archive faster with the new generation of Cache-A LTO-6 appliances,” said Phil Ritti, CEO of Cache-A. “The boosts in productivity, delivered by the latest Cache-A innovations, are particularly advantageous as they give users increased archiving speed, data mobility and the ability to share content organization-wide in new and exciting ways.”

About Cache-A Corporation:
Cache-A’s award-winning, archive appliances are employed daily by thousands of users worldwide, in media/entertainment, Fortune 500 corporations, government departments, higher-education and houses of worship, to securely archive, search and retrieve vital digital assets. Cache-A’s product range includes desktop and rack-mount appliances that are compatible with Windows, Mac OS and Linux/Unix networking infrastructures. Renowned for their ease-of-use, Cache-A products deliver leading-edge performance in video and digital film workflows, and lead the field in using the secure, portable, interchangeable, industry-standard LTFS and tar formats on LTO-6 media. Cache-A’s Pro-Cache was awarded Creative Cow’s prestigious Blue Ribbon in 2011 for “Best Archiving System”, and Power-Cache won Studio Daily’s 2012 Prime Award for “Best User Interface/User Experience”. www.Cache-A.com

ROCK LEGENDS, PRIMETIME TV AND UNIVERSITIES RELY ON CACHE-A TO SAFEGUARD THEIR TREASURED ASSETS

Cache-A Corporation (www.cache-a.com), manufacturer of award-winning archiving appliances, today revealed details of how its LTFS LTO-tape-based archive appliances, are being used by major TV broadcasters, in on-set production environments, higher education and rock legends, to safeguard the increasing amounts of data and video-related media they generate. Cache-A is showing its full LTO-6 product range at NAB 2013, Las Vegas, at Cache-A Booth #SL11109.

Broadcasters including BBC UK, BBC America and TBS in Japan have all recently purchased Cache-A appliances. Smithsonian Channel, a joint venture between Showtime Networks Inc. and The Smithsonian Institution, made the strategic decision in 2012 to base its archive future around LTO-tape, using the LTFS format on Cache-A’s versatile archive platform. The channel broadcasts award-winning original documentaries, series and groundbreaking programs highlighting America’s historical, cultural and scientific heritage. It also maintains a large collection of original field footage, plus production copies of archival material from the Smithsonian Institution, the US National Archives and establishments such as NASA. It harnesses Cache-A Power-Cache with dual LTO-5 drives to undertake this vital aspect of its work.

“With Cache-A we have found a really user-friendly, scalable solution, that can grow as we grow,” says Smithsonian Channel archivist Karma Foley. “It allows us to protect all of these assets for posterity, while facilitating a working archive so that we can repurpose material as required for new programs and other uses.”

Tamalpais Research Institute, also known as TRI Studios, is a virtual music venue in San Rafael, CA, created by legendary Grateful Dead founding member, and 1994 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, Bob Weir. Weir regularly hosts interviews and performances from leading musicians, such as Sammy Hagar Lukas Nelson, Dave Schools and Phil Lesh, which are broadcast live across the Internet. The associated media, typically HD video and ProTools audio files, are preserved to LTO-tape using Cache-A’s Pro-Cache appliance, with dual copies being made for storage at separate locations.

“As a state-of-the-art facility, we only deal with best-of-class equipment, and you can’t argue otherwise when it comes to archiving with Cache-A,” says John Harkin CTO at TRI Studios. “The Pro-Cache does exactly what it says it does – it archives our stuff, and retrieves material whenever we need it again. It’s the sort of no-nonsense hardware that we love.”

Cache-A has also impacted in higher-education with appliances at Clemson University, Louisiana State University, MIT and Harvard. Each of the 450 students taking film and media courses at University of Texas, Austin, TX, are encouraged to use Prime-Cache to archive their projects and the accumulated media associated with their studies. Typically, this includes native footage from an array of DSLR, HD and digital cinema cameras, such as ARRI Alexa, as well as non-linear editing and audio finishing systems, and 3D animation tools. The university’s radio, TV and film department has also recently used Prime-Cache to archive the award-winning Portrait Of Wally, the story of the discovery Egon Schiele’s painting that was looted by the Nazis, directed by University Faculty-member Andrew Shea.

“We use Prime-Cache pretty much every day, and it has proven a reliable, well-thought-out, highly-affordable and easy-to-use product,” says Susanne Kraft, Post Production Supervisor, Radio TV-Film Department at University of Texas. “With students producing increasing amounts of data, it’s just not cost-effective, or safe, for them to store media on hard disks for the long-term. We recommend they safeguard their media with LTO-tape. For just a few dollars they get huge storage capacity and a great feeling of security.”

In Europe, Egg Post Production, Dublin, Ireland, is making a return on its investment in Pro-Cache by archiving RAW camera material for primetime TV shows, including Sky One’s Sinbad and BBC’s Ripper Street. Shed Media, one of the UK’s leading broadcast production houses, has harnessed Pro-Cache, and its LTFS capabilities, as part of a larger DIT solution, into the on-set production workflows of its most recent primetime series – the BBC’s Turn Back Time, in which families experience what life was like for their ancestors in bygone times, and on Channel 5’s romantic reality show The Bachelor.

“Due to the volume of material we create, particularly on multi-camera productions, we knew the capabilities of LTFS would be a great benefit for working with assets after they have been archived,” says Adam Downey, group head of post production at Shed Media. “Once we heard that Cache-A had LTFS working properly and that it was stable, we invested in their Pro-Cache5. From the on-set system we now get protected copies of material, and faster turnaround to edit. It’s cost-effective, as the production already has data wranglers on-set, and the routines with the Pro-Cache5 are simple, so it’s easy for them too.”

TSL PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS’ PIETER SCHILLEBEECKX DISCUSSES 5.1 FOR LIVE SPORTS BROADCASTING AT THE 2013 NAB SHOW

LAS VEGAS, APRIL 5, 2013 — TSL Professional Products Ltd.’s ( TSL PPL) Pieter Schillebeeckx, Product Manager for the company’s SoundField series of Surround Sound Microphones and Processors, will present a seminar entitled, “Broadcasting the Surround Experience – Making 5.1 Simple for Live Sports Broadcasting from Capture to Delivery,” on Monday, April 8, 2013, from 11:30 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. at the 2013 NAB Show’s Pro Audio Pit (Booth C3155), at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

As 5.1 surround audio takes hold as the norm for broadcasts, it has presented many broadcasters with the challenge of easily capturing surround – particularly during live events. Schillebeeckx will deliver an overview presentation addressing these issues as well as stressing the need for stereo/mono downmix compatibility. The presentation will relay simple methods for the capturing of surround sound, as well as stereo to 5.1 upmixing through to monitoring.

Additionally, Schillebeeckx will discuss the traditional methods of surround capture, which often produce audio that suffers from phase incoherency and results in artifacts when downmixing to stereo or mono. Schillebeeckx will show how broadcasters can entirely eradicate this issue through the use of “single point source” “phase coherent” surround microphones.

Attendees are also invited to visit TSL PPL at Booth #N1124 to gain a firsthand look at the technology and equipment discussed at the seminar.

This seminar is open to all NAB attendees.
