XL Video Supplies The BRITs 2013

XL Video supplied LED screens, projection, camera, PPU and screen management system for The BRIT Awards 2013 with MasterCard, staged at London’s O2 Arena and presented by James Corden.

It’s the eleventh consecutive year that XL (and Production Manager Paul Wood) have been involved as Video supplier for the high profile annual Music Awards, again working with BRIT Awards Productions (Papilo) and BRITs TV.

This year’s show featured show-stopping live performances from Muse, Justin Timberlake, Robbie Williams, Taylor Swift, Emeli Sande and One Direction amongst others.

Peter Bingemann’s set design included a dynamic backdrop of three dimensional Ribbons of varying sizes, half of which were simple light boxes and half were “Video Ribbons” using a total of 120 square metres of Pixled FX-11 LED tiles to fill them.

The main stage screen – which flew out to allow band entrances and exits – was made from Absen 6 mm LED and measured 6 metres wide by 10 metres high.

During band changeovers, a 6 metre wide by 3.5 metre high ‘closedown’ screen built from Lighthouse 12mm LED screen and 3 video ribbons flew in downstage whilst Awards were presented on the B Stage in the middle of the audience.

For One Direction, XL supplied the two LED screens needed for an oversized scenic pinball machine on which the UK’s number one boy band performed. A five metre square section of Barco NX6 (6 mm resolution) formed the Scoreboard, and the playfield floor was made up of Pixled F12 (12mm resolution) 3 metres wide by 6 metres high.

Two eight metre wide by 4.5 metre high Lighthouse R7 screens were supplied in the standard stage left and right positions, with four 16’ x 9’ ‘repeater’ projection screens positioned around the O2 Arena to ensure that everyone had a good view of the stage action and nominations’ packages.

Wolfgang Klippel To Present 134th AES Convention Heyser Lecture In Rome

“Small, Loud-Speakers: Taking Physics To The Limit”

ROME: 134th AES Convention Chairman, Umberto Zanghieri, has announced that Wolfgang Klippel will present the Richard C. Heyser Memorial Lecture. Founder of Klippel GmbH, and developer of innovative control & measurement systems dedicated to loudspeakers and transducers, Klippel is a distinguished educator and an AES Fellow. The convention will be held May 4 -7, 2013 at the Fontana di Trevi Conference Centre – Rome, Italy,

Entitled Small, Loud-Speakers: Taking Physics To The Limit, the Heyser Lecture will address the challenge in engineering diminutive speakers that can also be loud, have high efficiency and low distortion. The loudspeaker is the weakest part of the audio chain, and the basic construction and principle of the moving coil speaker has remained unchanged for a century. However, understanding of its operation and limitations has increased considerably. Modern signal processing techniques, coupled with innovative design can create small drive units with optimum trade-off between the crucial design factors. An abstract of the lecture is posted at

LOGAN Reunites with 72andSunny for Activision’s Skylanders SWAP Force™

Infused with a childlike sense of fun and excitement, the two-minute Skylanders SWAP Force spot directed by LOGAN’s Jens Gehlhaar is an energetic showcase of character animation. The new spot is also a testament to the potency of collaboration, its eye-catching visuals and clever concept developed and executed in tandem with creative teams from 72andSunny and Activision Publishing, Inc.

Skylanders SWAP Force is an extension of the Skylanders Spyro’s AdventureTM and Skylanders GiantsTM toy and game line, now offering kids the ability to swap the top and bottom halves of SWAP Force characters. Approaching the spot with an inspired idea, the Activision, 72andSunny and LOGAN teams orchestrated an homage to a now classic Fat Boy Slim music video. As the song plays, the characters swap body parts to create new hybrids, all the while dancing in time with the beat.

“Our office is just down the street from both Activision and 72andSunny, so our three companies worked together very closely. Everyone was involved with just about every aspect of the project – from writing, storyboarding, and board-o-matics to blocking to modeling, animating, lighting, rendering, and final touch up in Flame – everyone contributed to the final product,” explained Gehlhaar. “Luckily we have some fantastic character animators at LOGAN who were able to take everything that was being thrown at them.”

“The amazing thing about Activision is that they’re so willing to push boundaries. The Fatboy Slim concept was a bit of creative risk – referencing a band that was popular before a lot of the games’ fans were even born. This is definitely a youthful spot, but we didn’t feel at all limited by the target audience,” added Gehlhaar.

LOGAN was also energized by its return to agency 72andSunny, a creative partnership that has continued over several projects. “The folks at 72andSunny are always a blast to work with,” noted Founder and ECD Alexei Tylevich, “They’re a very ambitious and talented team with a strong creative vision.”

RTW Appoints Christopher Spahr U.S. Director of Sales and Operations

Spahr Will Oversee and Develop U.S.-Based Sales and Marketing Strategies for RTW

LANCASTER, PA, MARCH 25, 2013 – RTW, a leading vendor of visual audio meters for professional broadcast, production, post production and quality control, is pleased to announce the appointment of Christopher Spahr as the company’s new U.S. Director of Sales and Operations in the United States. Spahr, who began his new role on March 1, 2013, will be based out of RTW’s new U.S. facility, located in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He will work along with Group One, RTW’s exclusive U.S. distributor, to support the company’s dealer base in the United States. In addition, he has spent time as a recording engineer, providing audio engineering and production services to a roster of top-tier record companies and artists, including a Grammy-winning Latin jazz CD with Arturo Sandoval. Spahr holds a Recording Arts Specialized Associate’s Degree from Full Sail University and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Barry University.

Having Spahr in place to head up the U.S. sales force will be a key factor in the company’s continued success and future international expansion. TNDV Advances to the NCAA Final Four Big Dance Concert Series

Mobile Production specialist to produce live concert audio and video for partial broadcast

NASHVILLE, March 25, 2013TNDV heads to Atlanta early next month with its 40-foot expanding side mobile production truck, Aspiration, to produce audio and video for multiple live concerts during the NCAA Final Four tournament. The free, three-day Big Dance Concert Series event, taking place at Centennial Olympic Park near the Georgia Dome, will provide entertainment for Final Four attendees, with portions airing on CBS and streaming live to the web.

The Big Dance Concert Series brings several local and national acts to the same stage each night. Each concert is treated as a unique event, with different daily sponsors and special needs for each band. TNDV will work alongside production specialist GoVision, which hired TNDV and will provide all large format video displays for the concerts; and Unlimited Visibility, which will oversee lighting and staging among other production tasks.

Aspiration is built to support large, multi-faceted productions such as the Big Dance Concert Series, with multiple cameras, high-capacity routing and switching, and a comprehensive audio suite on board. However, the production challenges of injecting additional excitement across multiple events — and re-creating that excitement for home viewers — requires intense focus and dedication.

“This is a tough balance to achieve,” said Nic Dugger, president, TNDV. “The on-premises crowd wants to see the show better. They want tight shots of Zac Brown, and want to see the details of the instruments that the Dave Matthews Band is playing. Home viewers want a more complete story, with wide crowd views and establishing shots that make them feel as if they in the venue. Our talented crew will work alongside GoVision and Unlimited Visibility to accommodate both needs.”

Dugger anticipates special audio needs given the multiple band rotations, with TNDV producing special re-mixes for live broadcasts. TNDV will use festival style patching with a digital stage box and MADI fiber to feed Aspiration, and add crowd microphones to ensure that the live sound is authentic with local crowd flavor. The complete Aspiration audio production workflow will include ProTools multi-track recording and JoeCo MADI recorders.

On the video side, Dugger expects on-demand Deko graphics and Harris Broadcast HView SX Hybrid multiviewers to play big roles, with multiviewers used inside and outside the truck to monitor live signals. TNDV will also use multiple Aja Ki-Pro Recorders to provide quick recorded media turnaround to participating bands, and employ various up, down and cross-conversion tools to accommodate the GoVision displays and live broadcast feeds.

“The nightly change in sponsors creates significant operational challenges, including the ability to quickly reconfigure the technical infrastructure for different web streams,” said Brady Haass, director of sales, GoVision. “Aspiration clearly has the capacity to accommodate three major sponsors and all of their interactive needs from a mobile production standpoint.”

Wild(child) Misbehaves in Honor of Women’s History Month

If, as feminist historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich once said, “well behaved women seldom make history,” then the creative editorial boutique known as Wild(child) made a play for the history books last week, throwing a raucous celebration in honor of Women’s History Month. Co-hosted by independent sales representative Roxeanneandco. and film production company goodstory, the Thursday event brought together a selection of women and men from dozens of NYC ad agencies and production companies to Wild(child)’s sprawling Flatiron studio for an evening of food, art, and good old-fashioned misbehaving.

Vista Systems’ Spyder Goes Large in Leading Energy Company’s Collaboration Room

Once again Vista Systems’ Spyder is the video processor of choice at one of the country’s leading energy companies. This time a top independent oil and natural gas exploration and production company is deploying a Spyder X20 8×8 in its collaboration room where staff analyze geological maps in close detail.

“Spyder is used to edge blend two dual-link DVI projectors, each 2560×1600 native,” says Mitchell Warren of Ford AV, which designs, installs, services and rents professional sound, video and lighting systems from its base in Oklahoma City. “While Spyder primarily does edge blending, it also does some switching” for the 192×65-inch display in the high-end collaboration room. Sources for the big-screen display include laptops, high-resolution PC towers with dual-link DVI outputs, and videoconferencing.

Warren notes that Spyder delivers unique capabilities to the collaboration room. “I don’t know of anything else that will edge blend dual-link DVI resolutions,” he says. “Once you get above 1080p you don’t have many options besides the Spyder.”
