Leader of TV Everywhere Division Brings Focus, Experience to U.S. and Canadian Markets

READING, U.K. — March 6, 2013 — Snell today announced the appointment of Paul Martin as president of Snell North America. Martin is taking on leadership of sales, marketing, and service functions for the North American market.

“At Snell, we see how the pressures of TV Everywhere and the ongoing evolution of consumer electronics are driving transformation of the broadcast business, and we understand the economic and technical impact of this shift on our customers,” said Martin. “As our customers respond to these challenges and embrace new technologies and workflows models, we work right alongside them, ensuring they have the right media management and playout solutions that maximize revenue opportunities and operational efficiencies. Our router, switcher, modular, and conversion product lines are used across the United States and around the world in broadcast operations of all sizes, and we continue to deliver future-proof solutions that support broadcasters’ changing operations.”

In addition to his new role, Martin maintains his role as global managing director for the TV Everywhere division, where he oversees Snell’s product development, sales, delivery, and support functions for playout automation, channel-in-a box, media asset management, and second-screen solutions. Previously, Martin ran the company’s global manufacturing, supply chain, service operations, and customer satisfaction agenda. Before joining Snell, he worked at British Telecom in senior business-transformation roles, leading the company’s drive to deliver excellence in customer experience. He also served in various manufacturing, logistics, and program management roles at Motorola Semiconductor in the United States. He earned his bachelor’s in business administration from the University of Texas at Austin and his MBA from the University of Cambridge.

“Paul is an ideal choice to succeed Jonathan Goldstein,” said Snell CEO Simon Derry. “Under Jonathan’s leadership we experienced strong sales growth in the Americas and earned high marks for customer service. Paul brings that same focus on customer service, along with a proven track record of organizational development, which will help us continue to build our operation in North America. Broadcasters in the United States and Canada are industry leaders, and we are proud to be a trusted partner for so many customers in these markets. We take our responsibility to these customers very seriously, and with Paul’s guidance, we will continue working hard to make sure that we provide the right technology and the right customer support at the right time.”

Digital Artist Benjamin Von Wong Gets Creative with FOR-A’s VFC-7000 Variable Frame Rate Camera

Toronto, Canada – FOR-A Corporation of America, a leading manufacturer of video and audio systems for the broadcast and professional video industries, announces that Montreal-based photographer and visual engineer Benjamin Von Wong recently used its VFC-7000 HD Variable Frame Rate Camera for two artistic video projects.

When he first laid eyes on the lightweight, compact VFC-7000 camera at a Toronto tradeshow last summer, Von Wong was impressed with the camera’s slow motion capabilities. He capitalized on the camera’s ability to capture high-speed HD recordings when he later used it to shoot a creative video that focused on his long hair. Von Wong subjected himself to water, eggs, and flour being thrown at his head during a cold night, along with some fire thrown into the mix – all in the name of exciting slow motion footage. He paired FOR-A’s VFC-7000 with a LensBaby Composer lens for the video shoot.

“The VFC-7000’s functionality was fantastic,” said Benjamin. “Other than the FOR-A solution, we didn’t use any other extremely high-end equipment for the shoot. We also were dealing with a low-light situation. My team and I even used car lights for lighting part of the video. Even with these challenging circumstances, the camera performed well and exhibited a great deal of sensitivity.”

The award-winning VFC-7000 is an all-in-one self-contained camera that offers high-speed play out and recording in full frame HD at up to 700 frames per second. The unit comes complete with a camera head, main body, an F lens mount and recording component. With its high-sensitivity CMOS color sensor, the VFC-7000 features an electronic high-speed shutter that can operate as fast as 1/200,000 second for filming fast moving events and subjects without blur.

In addition to shooting The secret behind Von Wong’s epic hair, Benjamin also used the VFC-7000 to shoot a medieval pumpkin destruction video, which he entered into a Halloween filmmaking competition. You can read more on the pumpkin project shoot and view the video here: http://www.vonwong.com/blog/epic-pumpkin-destruction-700fps/

Benjamin explains, “This was my first time using a camera system with such high-speed capabilities, so I wasn’t sure what to expect from the VFC-7000. I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to operate the camera, which allowed me more time to focus on other elements of the project. I came away from these video projects confident that FOR-A’s VFC-7000 is a high-quality camera that offers anyone the chance to shoot rich action video in uncompressed HD.”

XL Events Supplies Scenic LED for UK Premiere of A Good Day To Die Hard

For the UK premiere of the fifth installment of the Die Hard franchise, Twentieth Century Fox brought in Premier to produce the London premiere of A Good Day To Die Hard.

Reflecting the full-on action of the movie, and providing a backdrop for the arriving stars including Bruce Willis and Jai Courtney, the Leicester Square premiere included a genuine ex-active-service helicopter alongside the red carpet outside the Odeon.

To add a little extra glamour to the heavy machinery, Premier brought in XL Events to provide scenic LED along the base of the 17m long flatbed truck on which the helicopter sat.

The low level of the truck provided XL with a challenge as there was limited space around the base in which to rig the LED. XL Events supplied 56 tiles of Pixled FX-11 for the event.

Pixled FX-11 was selected for the job due to its lightweight 450mm square tile size and suitability for outdoor use. The size and weight of the LED – just 3kg per tile – made working around the truck much easier.

Content for the LED was controlled by one of XL Events’ Catalyst media servers managed by Hugh Davies-Webb.

Mark Rooney, Project Manager for XL Events commented, “With the LED being at ground level and the helicopter alongside the red carpet it was important to ensure the displayed content could be seen from above and the side. Pixled FX-11 was a good solution for this event as its 160 degree horizontal and vertical viewing angle ensured that all attendees had a great view.”

Alongside Mark Rooney, the LED crew included Alain Demey, Sandro Bruni and Jolyon Olivier who rose to the challenge of installing the LED in the limited space around the helicopter.

“It was a pleasure to work with the team at Premier on this event,” continued Rooney. “We always enjoy helping make their creative ideas reality.”

A/V Solutions Provider Creative Technology Expands Offering of Riedel Intercom Systems

GLENDALE, Calif. — March 6, 2013 — Riedel Communications, provider of pioneering real-time video, audio, data, and communications networks, today announced that renowned A/V solutions provider Creative Technology (CT) has expanded its communications rental portfolio with Riedel technology including the comprehensive Artist digital matrix intercom, Performer digital partyline intercom, and RockNet audio distribution systems.

“After many years of successfully deploying legacy analog comms systems to meet customer specifications, the next logical step for CT is to embrace a completely digital event communication solution,” said Chuck “Chopper” Boyle, senior intercom engineer at CT. “We put Riedel technology at the core of our new digital intercom systems because of its acceptance across multiple industries and because the integration of a matrix intercom system with digital partyline capabilities opens up a whole new set of possibilities for our customers. We also work with Riedel because of the companys exceptional support before, during, and after the sale. In fact, we consider Riedel to be more of a partner than a vendor.”

“CT’s reputation for exceptional customer service and top-tier technical and operational personnel complement the company’s innovative application of the latest technology, including our acclaimed intercom systems,” said Patti Gunnell, entertainment solutions manager at Riedel Communications. “We are pleased to see yet another industry leader relying on Riedel technology for world-class events.”

CT is an international A/V solutions provider specializing in event-staging services, and the company already has used the new Riedel systems for projects for AutoTrader.com(R), Home Depot(R), the Toyota(R) Camry launch, Sony(R) E3 press, Land Rover(R) Evoque International Press Day, BlizzCon, and the Riot Games(R) World Championships.

In addition to providing broadcast-quality digital audio, the Riedel Artist digital matrix intercom offers the distinct advantage of seamless scalability, which makes it easy for users to expand their systems to form larger matrices of up to 1024×1024 non-blocking ports. Artist’s redundant ring topology protects the system against single points of failure. Interfacing with a wide array of both digital and analog industry-standard intercom systems, the system also facilitates flexible, cost-effective deployment.

IKA Collective Produces Powerful Launch Campaign For New FOX Thriller THE FOLLOWING

Creative Production/Post Hybrid Transforms Industrial Property into Multiple Television Stages For One-Day Shoot With Kevin Bacon, James Purefoy and 100 Additional Cast And Crew

NEW YORK, NY — For the launch of the new psychological drama THE FOLLOWING, which marks Golden Globe winner and Emmy Award-nominated actor Kevin Bacon‘s primetime series debut, Fox Broadcasting Company (FOX) again turned to the creative production/post studio hybrid IKA Collective to produce one of the multi-spot promo campaigns that led to the series’ highly-rated premiere. IKA had previously worked on successful series launch promo campaigns for several other FOX series, including NEW GIRL, RAISING HOPE and THE MINDY PROJECT. They also produced the extravagant promo for last season’s SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE premiere.

“We’re proud that FOX again entrusted us with this crucial series launch,” Ian Karr, Founder/Director at IKA Collective and Executive Producer on this project, says. “Launches are a huge deal — for the networks and for IKA. Whether it’s assembling an A-list team, or coming up with creative solutions to logistical and production challenges, we thrive in that high-stakes environment.”

Directed by Kerry Shaw Brown and lensed by Anthony Arendt, production on the two promos (entitled “Footsteps” and “The Raven”) proved especially challenging because it called for multiple, visually unique promos to be shot in just one day. That meant finding a location that not only captured the sense of urban dystopia that drives the creative, but one that also provided enough space to build a jail cell and an FBI office set.

Karr and his production team used an abandoned grain elevator in Brooklyn as the primary location for the sequence in which series co-star James Purefoy and his many followers walk through a graffiti-filled, decaying building, leaving behind bloody footprints as they walk toward a stone-faced Bacon. The other sets were built in an adjacent structure, creating a “pop-up” production studio on the Brooklyn waterfront.

“The FOX team came to us with epic creative concepts and everyone performed at their very highest level,” Karr adds. “The spots turned out great and more than 20 million viewers tuned in for the premiere. It doesn’t get much better than that.”

About IKA Collective:
Founded by noted brand strategist/director Ian Karr, IKA Collective is more than a production company. IKA Collective is all about communicating in a way that entertains and gets results. ABOUT THE FOLLOWING:
Airing Mondays (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), THE FOLLOWING is a fast-paced psychological thriller that follows a former FBI agent who is called out of retirement to track down a devious and diabolical serial killer, the mastermind behind an ever-growing web of murderers.

THE FOLLOWING is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Outerbanks Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television. The series is created, written and executive-produced by Kevin Williamson. Marcos Siega (“Dexter,” “The Vampire Diaries”) also serves as an executive producer and directed the pilot.

DIVAdirector(R) V5.1 — Easy and Efficient Media Asset Management System
DIVAdirector(R) V5.1 is Front Porch Digital’s newest update to its DIVAdirector media asset management (MAM) system. It is a permission-based Web application that enables complete access to file-based content stored by DIVArchive(R) content storage management (CSM) systems. DIVAdirector V5.1 contains new features that make it even easier for any media organization with DIVArchive to manage its digital files, especially if that organization is using Front Porch Digital’s new LYNX(SM) platform for moving, archiving, and publishing video to the cloud.

With cloud operations starting to dominate the industry, DIVAdirector 5.1 addresses LYNX-specific workflows and requirements such as site awareness, with a single DIVAdirector system showing the enterprise content view of assets stored in different archive systems — local, networked, or cloud-based systems, or any combination thereof — with integrated user permissions controlling access.

DIVArchive V7.1 also enables a complete range of world-class video transcoding and workflows and is directly integrated with Telestream’s Vantage(R) Transcode and Vantage Transcode(R) Pro. The enhancements to DIVArchive extend its applicability to media operations of every kind — broadcasters, educational and heritage institutions, the film industry, and government entities.
