Product Highlights at the 2013 NAB Show

New UTAH-100/UDS Routing Switchers With 4K Signal Capabilities
At the 2013 NAB Show, Utah Scientific will introduce an exciting extension of the UTAH-100/UDS routing switcher family to provide support for the new 4K (6 Gbps) signal format.

Routers in this new series range from 32 x 32 to 144 x 144 and offer the same control options as the very successful UDS routers introduced in 2012. Complementing the new 4K routers will be a new 4K signal-processing module that provides multiplexing and demultiplexing of 1.5 Gbps and 3 Gbps streams to and from the 6 Gbps signal.

New UTAH-400 Series 2 Routing Switcher for Smaller Systems
The newest member of the UTAH-400 Series 2 family of routers is a 72 x 72 frame that extends the family’s powerful feature set, which includes embedded signal processing to smaller-matrix applications. The new router offers a uniquely flexible architecture that makes it configurable in a full range of sizes, from 128 x 12 to 12 x 128 in addition to the traditional square matrix layout.

New UCP-LC3 Control Panel for UTAH-400 Routing Switchers
At the 2013 NAB Show, Utah Scientific will announce a new addition to the UCP-LC family of menu-based router control panels. The new panel features a high-resolution, full-color LCD display and buttons with dynamic labeling, offering a new level of user-friendly operation for today’s increasingly complex routing systems.

New iPad(R) Router Control App
Utah Scientific will also be demonstrating its new iPad(R) app for controlling UTAH-100/UDS and UTAH-400 routers from the iPad. This new control surface provides a user-configurable panel for complete control of Utah Scientific routers via Wi-Fi(TM) connections.

Utah Scientific Quote:
“We are very excited to share our new solutions for 4K signal-handling with NAB visitors and to learn from them their expectations of the future requirements for high-data-rate routing systems. Our customers have always been very important members of our product development team, helping us to address their current and long-term needs.”
– Tom Harmon, President and CEO, Utah Scientific

Fox Theatres in Pennsylvania Goes Digital with Christie Projectors

Christie® is helping the Fox Berkshire theatre, Reading, Pa., enter the modern age of digital cinema, following the complete upgrades of its eight screens exclusively with Christie Solaria® Series projectors. Formerly the Wyomissing 8, the facility recently celebrated its return to the Fox Theatres family after being under different management since 1996.
.
The movie house’s integrator and one of Christie’s preferred partners, Entertainment Supply & Technology (ES&T), selected Christie’s Managed Services team to install eight DCI-compliant Christie projectors, including two Christie CP2230s, one Christie CP2220, and five Christie CP2210s. As part of the agreement, Christie’s Managed Services team, in addition to projection, provided an integrated hardware package comprised of sound, networking and theatre management systems and will continue to provide onsite technical field services and 24/7 remote monitoring and telephone support through its Network Operations Center.
.
Donald Fox, President of Fox Theatres, has been pleased with the progress. “ES&T was instrumental in readying the facility for the conversion, and in the timely delivery and installation of all the equipment,” he said. “Working with Christie’s Managed Services team, they had Fox Berkshire up and running in time to show all the holiday blockbusters. Christie projectors wowed our audiences with the exceptional clarity, brilliant colors, and sharpness of the images. They were a hit right from the start.”
.
“Fox Theatres has a long history of entertaining the local community, ensuring that movie-goers get the best possible cinematic experience,” noted Sean James, vice president, Managed Services, Christie. “ES&T and Christie have always been strong supporters of independent chains like Fox Theatres, which are vital to the economic health of the communities they serve.”
.
Christie projectors will also feature strongly in the future of Fox Berkshire, according to ES&T, which said it looks forward to installing them at four new screens scheduled to go up in 2013. These include a large-format theater with a giant screen, which will be added to the complex during the second phase of renovations. Total revitalization plans include adding Dolby® Surround 7.1 in all the auditoriums, renovating the lobby, entrance, restrooms, concession stand, and signage, as well as installing new seating in existing rooms.
.
According to Bruce Schneiter, vice president of technical services, ES&T, the smooth installation of Christie projectors was a reflection of the experience and professionalism of ES&T. “We are a strong advocate of performing thorough field checks and site surveys at the client’s location prior to the delivery of the equipment, ensuring a perfect match of components, fast and efficient installation, and minimum downtime.
.
“ES&T is committed to helping exhibitors realize their vision of designing modern facilities that reflect the latest innovations in lobby and auditorium design, as well as digital entertainment,” Schneiter continued. “Our association with Christie has always been strong, built upon our mutual commitment to providing our customers with the highest quality products and technical support.”
.
Added Craig Sholder, vice president, Entertainment Solutions for Christie: “We are very pleased that Christie projectors were selected to bring the movie-viewing experience to the next level of entertainment for the people of Wyomissing, with cutting-edge technology that includes High Frame Rate (HFR) and 3D digital cinema capabilities. We look forward to continuing our excellent relationship with ES&T to help exhibitors across the country make the move to digital.”

Productions on Kodak Film Set the Gold Standard

The 2013 Academy Award® best picture nominees include six movies that were shot on Kodak film: Argo, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Django Unchained, Beasts of the Southern Wild, and Les Miserable.

In the 84-year history of Oscar®, no Academy Award®-winning best picture has ever been made without motion picture film.

"We congratulate all of the 2013 nominees for their remarkable achievements,” says Andrew Evenski, president and general manager of Kodak’s Entertainment and Commercial Films Group. “We are honored that so many talented filmmakers continue to choose Kodak technology to tell their stories and create extraordinary images.”

Movies made on Kodak film received a total of 56 nominations. In the four acting categories, an overwhelming majority (16 of 20) of the nominated performances were captured on motion picture film. Additionally, three of the five nominees for best cinematography relied on Kodak film to create their compelling imagery, as did three of the five directors acknowledged in their category.

Evenski also notes that Kodak is still making billions of feet of film. “Many of those reels will be loaded into cameras that are capturing movies that will contend for Academy Awards in 2014.”

Barry Manilow Returns to Broadway and grandMA2 is in the House

Multi Grammy Award-winner Barry Manilow returns to the Great White Way for the first time in more than two decades and this time he’s accompanied by grandMA2 consoles. Bandit Lites supplied the consoles to the St. James Theatre for the entertainer’s limited-run Broadway engagement featuring a huge catalog of his hits. A.C.T Lighting is the exclusive distributor of the grandMA in North America.

Production designer Seth Jackson began using grandMA2 products during the programming process. “We did a lot of the programming while the band was on the road, then we had a lot of stuff to re-program and no window to do it all at once,” he recalls. “So we did most of the programming with grandMA2 onPC command wing in California during rehearsals. Then we took the onPC command wint to New York to do a lot of ESP programming. It was a massive amount of work, and with the command wing, it was like having the real consoles.”

Once settled into the St. James Theatre Jackson began to use a pair of grandMA2 ultra light consoles to control more than 70 lights, most of them moving heads. The desks also control a front of house truss with conventional fixtures.

Jackson runs a pair of d3 media servers on Art-Net through the consoles as well. “It’s very helpful to have the grandMA2s for that purpose. They run seamlessly.”

When Manilow finishes his New York engagement his show will revert to a touring model, Jackson reports. But for now, “the grandMA2s are rockin’ away” on Broadway, he says. “I hear only positive things about them from the producers.”

Jackson programmed with his two associate designers, Nathan W. Scheuer and Brent Sandrock.  The lighting director for the tour is Jason Workman
