The LED panels include a high-density version with 78 button keys, 72 of which can be configured as source or destination keys for increased flexibility. The LCD panels include a rotary encoder control knob for user-friendly “paging.” The new Luna Series models are compatible with all current Snell routers, feature an ultrashallow rack mounting depth of less than 2 inches (50 mm), and can be powered from an external +12V DC supply or using POE (Power Over Ethernet).

Sirius 800 Series Routers Add Frame Syncs to Built-In Advanced Hybrid Processing Technology — Taking Routing/Processing to a New Level
The Sirius 800 family of enterprise-class routing switchers has been enhanced with the availability of frame synchronization on the units’ AHP (Advanced Hybrid Processing) input and output cards. The resulting router architecture enables independent processing of audio and video signals with no restrictions on signal formats, timing between signal types, or number of audio channels. IRVINE, Calif. — Feb. 13, 2013 — Sonnet Technologies today announced an upgrade to its Tempo(TM) SSD and Tempo SSD Pro 6Gb/sec SATA PCI Express(R) (PCIe(R)) 2.5-inch SSD cards to support booting in Mac Pro(R) computers (early 2008 and newer). With the update, users can boot from a Mac Pro even in a RAID 0 configuration with two solid-state drives (SSDs). Booting is also supported for Windows(R) 7 and 8 computers as well as Server 2008 and 2012 (although not from a RAID drive).

With the Tempo SSD and Tempo SSD Pro, users can purchase one or two SSDs separately and then easily mount them on PCIe cards. Unlike other PCIe SSD cards, the Tempo SSD Pro and Tempo SSD utilize widely available 2.5-inch SATA SSDs (sold separately), giving users great flexibility in selecting the SSD capacity and performance that best suit their needs and budget, as well as the option to upgrade easily as required. With the ability to boot from attached SSDs, Mac Pro users can now extract the best performance possible from their systems with significantly faster operation.

Delivering performance that cannot be matched by spinning-disk drives, SSDs have become important components in systems requiring extremely fast data transfer speeds and large numbers of I/O operations. Instead of relying on proprietary SSD modules, Sonnet chose to support standard 2.5-inch SATA SSDs to allow users access to the most common SSD form factor, which is generally available at better prices than proprietary SSD modules. The Sonnet Tempo 6Gb/sec SATA cards offer twice the bandwidth of the Mac Pro’s native 3Gb/sec SATA bus for superior performance.

The Tempo SSD card uses a high-performance 6Gb/sec SATA controller and a PCIe 2.0 interface. It features a unique modular design that supports one SSD with the card at half-length, or two SSDs with an included bracket that extends the card to full length. The Tempo SSD supports sustained read speeds of up to 500 MB/sec from a single SSD or up to 660 MB/sec from two SSDs configured as a RAID 0 set.

The Tempo SSD Pro card can mount two SSDs in a full-length PCIe slot, such as those in the Mac Pro. The Tempo SSD Pro features a higher-performance 6Gb/sec SATA SSD controller that supports sustained read speeds of up to 960 MB/sec from two SSDs configured as a Mac Pro-bootable RAID 0 set.

The Sonnet Tempo SSD and Tempo SSD Pro cards install into a Mac(R) or Windows computer’s PCIe slot, or into a Thunderbolt(TM) expansion chassis for PCIe cards such as Sonnet’s Echo(TM) Express line, or the xMac(TM) mini Server PCIe 2.0 expansion system/1U rackmount enclosure. With SSDs attached, both cards are narrow enough to occupy the space of only a single-width card.

HSL Delivers Visual Design for 2013 TPi Awards

Leading UK lighting and visual rental specialist HSL created the lighting and video design for the 2013 Total Production International (TPi) Awards, and supplied all the necessary trussing, motors, rigging and control infrastructure plus crew needed to rig over 350 Robe lighting fixtures in the Ballroom of the Novotel, West London.


Working for TPi Awards show producers Mondiale Publishing and with Event Manager Ben Chadwick, the visual design was created by HSL’s Tim Fawkes in collaboration with Mike Oates. HSL’s event Project Manager was Spantax.
The basic concept was to make it “Funky, fun and more rock n roll than in previous years,” states Fawkes, adding that the biggest challenge was being under pressure to produce something amazing looking to impress all the top industry professionals who were present!
The Awards honour the most popular technical production, industry events and personalities of the year, and over 1000 guests attended to network, party, and appreciate the industry’s achievements in the last 12 months in the action packed Awards ceremony, presented by Lauren Laverne.
Other challenges for the event design included low ceiling height and limited roof weight loading in the room, which was greatly helped by the light weight of the Robe LED fixtures!
Multiple trusses were installed in the roof to provide all the lighting positions. The room was long width-ways, so it was important to try and ensure that everyone was pulled into the onstage action when it started, and also to involve a substantial number of tables further back in the middle section.
Fawkes decided on an innovative asymmetric video screen look for the stage, with a mixture of portrait and landscape format LED screens hung at different depths at the back.
He matched this with the lighting design. To bring a beamy rock ‘n’ roll edge to the room he used Robe LEDBeam 100s in clusters of four – ACL style – in-between the onstage screens and also dotted around the stage and the room. “The sheer speed and the great colours of these fixtures gives numerous options for modern looks as well as being able to create more traditional ACL looks” he explains.
At the back of the room they installed a scaled down version of the same screen design (all screens were supplied by VER) also interspersed by batches of LEDBeam 100s – Fawkes used a total of 132 Robe LEDBeam 100s!
Eighty-two Robe CityFlex48 LED multi-purpose fixtures were dotted around the room, 24 were used in high res mode against the black in the back wall, and the rest up-lighting the shimmering voile room-wrap (supplied by Blackout).
Of the 32 x Robe ROBIN MMX Wash Beams, eight were used over the stage, covering back light and creating breakup / beam effects, while the other 24 were placed on various trusses around the room to pick up on the walk-ups and make up comprehensive table looks and breakups.
Twenty-four of Robe’s new DLF LED wash lights were chosen as the work horse for the stage light – “The internal barn doors allowed for great control over the light spill when working in close proximity to the tables and the LED screens”.
Thirty three LEDWash 600s were used for the majority of the table lighting all around the space, and the B-Stage in the centre of the room was covered with four LEDWash 600s.
Fawkes operated the show using a Hog 3 Full Boar console and all the Robes were supplied by Robe UK.
HSL’s crew boss Mark Scrimshaw led a team of seven techs, and they plus Fawkes and Spantax commenced the get in on the Sunday at 7 a.m. and were ready for the show on Monday at 6 p.m. including full schedule of technical run throughs and rehearsals beforehand.
Numerous comments have referenced it as one of the best looking TPi Awards shows to date in terms of aesthetics, and HSL is extremely proud to have been able to show off its design capabilities in such a high profile industry event.
Fawkes concludes, “The pressure was really on to produce something special – and you are effectively performing for the whole industry. Our team was extremely strong, and WYSIWYG was an invaluable tool right through the process that meant that everything ran like clockwork on site”.

Beyoncé, a 17-time Grammy Award-winner and longtime Sennheiser user, took the stage at halftime with her signature custom chrome-finish Sennheiser SKM 5200-II handheld transmitter, topped with an MD 5235 dynamic capsule. “She’s got such a huge voice,” said Stephen Curtin of Eighth Day Sound Systems, who is also Beyoncé’s front-of-house engineer. “It’s difficult to put her on a lot of other mics as she can pretty easily distort a capsule if she’s really on it. To have the comfort of knowing that’s not going to be a problem, right off the top, is a huge thing for me.”

Beyoncé and her all-female band and dance troupe performed a medley of hits including “Love On Top”, “Crazy In Love”, “End Of Time” and “Baby Boy” before her Destiny’s Child band mates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams joined her for tracks including “Bootylicious” and “Independent Woman”. Rowland and Williams also stayed on-stage for Beyoncé’s smash hit “Single Ladies”, leaving her to deliver “Halo” solo for the grand finale.

“Nothing beats the quality and the frequency response of the RF compander in the Sennheiser equipment,” observed Jason Kirschnick, Chief Technology Officer, Eighth Day Sound Systems, Beyoncé’s tour production provider. “If you want sound quality, it’s pretty much unmatched when you put it out in the field against other manufacturers.”

Monitor engineer Demetrius Moore sums up the prowess of the microphone’s sonic attributes even more succinctly: “The Sennheiser SKM 5200 is the world’s best sounding live wireless vocal microphone, hands down,” he says.

Prior to kick-off, and using a matte black Sennheiser SKM 5200-II transmitter with an MD 5235 dynamic capsule, Alicia Keys performed the Star Spangled Banner seated at a piano on a stage which was in the shape of the NFL logo. Keys’ voice was shimmering and crystal-clear, and her moving rendition of the national anthem served as the perfect spark to what would become one of the more memorable Super Bowl events in recent history.

Sennheiser’s advanced RF technology is tremendously beneficial during special events such as the Super Bowl, where this year Jason Eskew and the Professional Wireless Systems team coordinated more than 80 audio and comms channels. Stephen Curtin is carrying a total of 12 channels of Sennheiser EM 3732-II wireless receivers on the current leg of Beyoncé’s tour. There are eight channels for SKM 5200-II handhelds, including a main and backup for Beyoncé, three background vocalists and guests, plus four channels for horns. The horn players all use SK 5212-II belt pack transmitters.

“From a technical perspective, RF is a big selling point simply because we can get the 3732 as a wideband product and cover the whole frequency range,” explains Curtin. “That gives us the greatest ease of fitting it in where we can, especially in crowded RF environments. There aren’t a lot of products that can do that; everything else is specific to a certain bandwidth.”

“Sonically, Sennheiser has always been my preference,” he continues. “There’s always a significant difference when you hear someone using another product compared with a Sennheiser.” The off-axis rejection of the Sennheiser vocal mic is another benefit that Curtin appreciates. “Having great directivity and being able to get a significant amount of gain before feedback is a pretty big deal.”

“We used to rent lights then decided to buy them. We have 10 lighting designers a month who come in wanting different things. So the more tricks our lights have the better.”

Lose reports that the HPE 1500s “destroyed everything else” when he explored potential fixtures to add to his inventory. “We chose the light based on its autofocus, beam macros and intensity. The autofocus and beam macos were features only Clay Paky offers. And in terms of intensity, the HPE 1500s were much better than the competition.”
