RSI Rete Tre Bolsters Inventory with HARMAN Studer OnAir 3000 Console

LUGANO, Switzerland — RSI Rete Tre is the third Italian-language radio station from Radiotelevisione svizzera di lingua italiana (RSI), based in Lugano, Switzerland. Set up in 1988, it is aimed at younger viewers, broadcasting solely in Italian and featuring popular and alternative music. With its 25th anniversary approaching, the studio decided it was a perfect time to overhaul and upgrade its main studio and specified a HARMAN Studer OnAir 3000 digital broadcast console.

Although they had considered other options, the OnAir 3000 became their de facto choice to add to their many other Studer desks. It was supplied by Studer’s Swiss distributor, Dr. W.A. Guenther and is configured with 18 faders, multiple CAB system support, DJ and editorial monitoring, along with two master bus, recording bus, four aux bus and 16 N1 (mix-minus) bus.

The station’s principal criteria were ease of use, since their DJs need to manage multiple tasks when on air (such as computers and phone calls)—and integration with the existing Studer DigiMedia playout system.

Marco Strigl, Rete Tre’s Technical Support, said, “We already have several mixers from Studer, including OnAir 5000, OnAir 1000, OnAir 1500, OnAir 2500, Vista 7 and Vista 8, and past experience has shown us that they are very reliable—particularly the OnAir 3000.”

I/O on the desk include eight Mic/Line Inputs; eight Line Inputs; 24 AES/EBU Inputs; 64 MADI Optical Inputs; 16 ADAT Optical Inputs (for monitoring), eight Line Outputs; 24 AES/EBU Outputs; 64 MADI Optical Outputs; and 16 ADAT Optical Outputs (for monitoring).

“The Studer platform offers a very easy-to-understand user Interface, and for me the whole Configuration Tool is very flexible and powerful,” Strigl continued. “The fact that our DJs and technicians already know the philosophy behind these mixers makes it very easy to specify Studer products.”

Wylie Stateman Saddles Up With Sound Devices 788T for the Academy Award-Nominated Film Django Unchained

Compact Digital Audio Recorder Provides Superior Sonic Quality, Robustness and Reliability in Capturing Film’s Action-Packed Sound Effects

LOS ANGELES, FEBRUARY 12, 2013 — When Academy Award-nominated Supervising Sound Editor Wylie Statemen sought a field recorder capable of providing the superior sonic quality needed to capture background and sound effects for Quentin Tarantino’s Academy Award-nominated film Django Unchained, he turned to Sound Devices 788T digital audio recorder. Stateman, who has been recognized in the Sound Editing category for Django Unchained—the sixth time he has been nominated for an Academy Award—chose the 788T for its small size, reliability and ease of use.

With more than 30 years of motion picture experience, Stateman has a high set of standards when it comes to choosing gear for his film projects. The industry veteran bases his selection on sonic quality, robustness of build and reliability. As he typically works in “run-and-gun”-type recording environments, he also looks for small, lightweight equipment. According to Stateman, “Although mobility is very important, there is no substitute for sonic integrity and reliability. Year after year we compare Sound Devices with other machinery and for several years now, the Sound Devices family of recorders has proven to be the best. Sound Devices equipment will continue to be a part of our field reconnaissance.”

For Django Unchained, Stateman used the 788T to record atmosphere, background, sound effects and samples for the film’s sound design needs. “We traveled to some pretty harsh environments, including Monument Valley and Death Valley, in order to capture authentic sounds for the film,” says Stateman. “I would say the majority of the post-production sound in Django Unchained owes its roots to the recordings made possible by the 788T.”

For the movie’s fight scenes, Stateman not only recorded the sound of guns, but the shots’ echoes as well. The same holds true for other weapons such as whips and chains, and various impulse devices, including signal cannons, blank guns and live firing weapons.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has nominated Django Unchained for an Academy Award in a total of five categories, including Sound Editing, Best Picture, Original Screenplay, Actor in a Supporting Role and Cinematography. The film is also up for several British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards, including a nod to Stateman and the audio team in the sound category. Additionally, the Motion Picture Sound Editors Golden Reel Awards nominated the film in the Best Sound Editing: Sound Effects and Foley category.

Throughout his illustrious career, Stateman has been nominated for multiple industry awards, including six Academy Awards, four BAFTA Awards and 15 Motion Picture Sound Editor Awards. Stateman won the 1993 BAFTA Award for Best Sound for his work on JFK. He has also won the Motion Picture Sound Editors Awards for Best Sound Editing for Inglorious Bastards (2010), Memoirs of a Geisha(2006) and Born on the Fourth of July (1990). Stateman is also the co-founder of the post-production sound services company Soundelux.

With the influx of multi-tracking both in the field and on set, the Sound Devices 788T has become the next-generation digital audio recorder for advanced sound mixers who require additional isolated tracks. It boasts eight full-featured inputs and records to up to 12 tracks. It accepts either microphone or line-level signals, provides 48-V phantom power for condenser microphones, offers peak limiters for microphone inputs and features fully adjustable high-pass filters—all in a compact package. Routing flexibility allows each input to be routed to left/right mixed tracks, isolated tracks or aux tracks.

The 788T has several options for recording media, including an internal SATA hard drive (solid-state in the 788T-SSD), CompactFlash cards, an external FireWire hard drive or DVD-RAM (with bus powering). Any or all of these can be used simultaneously. Additionally, when connected to Mac or Windows computers with high-speed USB or FireWire 400/800, the 788T functions as a high-speed mass storage device.

To simplify AES3 connectivity with mixers and cameras, the 788T has eight channels of balanced AES3 digital input and six channels of balanced AES3 output. The 788T can be clocked from an external word clock or from video sync. The 788T is also equipped with a high-accuracy time-code reader/generator. It also includes auto-record features to chase external rec-run video sources. To simplify metadata entry, the 788T accepts USB keyboards directly or can be operated remotely from iOS devices with the optional CL-WiFi. The 788T, like all Sound Devices products, is versatile and designed to withstand the physical and environmental extremes of rigorous field production.

Sound Devices, LLC designs and manufactures portable audio mixers, digital audio recorders, and digital video recorders and related equipment for feature film, episodic television, documentary, news-gathering, and acoustical test and measurement applications. The fourteen-year old company designs and manufactures from their Reedsburg, Wisconsin headquarters with additional offices in Madison, WI and Highland Park, IL. Inspiration and Imagination Power MPC’s Alternate Universe for Dell

Visit MPC

Reinforcing their position as the leader in character animation (Fox’s Vinnie, Fly Buys, Cadburys, Narnia’s Reepicheep and Eustace the Dragon), MPC introduces “Thomas,” a photo-real VFX-fueled spot for Dell that reveals the transformative power of imagination. The creative effort highlights a strong partnership between MPC, live action production company Furlined, and Director Bjoern Ruehmann.

Click here to view the making of “Thomas”

MPC took special care to define the personalities of all anthropomorphic characters, giving them real life and vitality. “The key to a spot like this is to capture the whimsical qualities of the animated pieces and connect those to the real world,” commented MPC NY Managing Director, Justin Lane. “The team worked painstakingly at designing and expressing personality in all of the characters and it truly shows…you really want to learn more about each of them.”

“The most important personality trait of the toad is that he is a bit grumpy and irritable,” added 2D Lead Gigi Ng. “We tried to accentuate this with his mouth line by making it more prominent, but with a subtle frown. We also emphasized how his eyes furrow and are never really open wide. He’s never curious, but always suspicious. By contrast, the rabbit character is always wide-eyed and alert.”

“Our priority was also researching anatomy to capture a perfect, believable look,” said CG Lead Bill Dorais. “For the toad we were trying to get the blinks to look correct, giving him a nictitating membrane, a thin skin that covers the eye. Our philosophy going into this was that the more details we added, the more believable the piece would be.”

MPC leveraged their proprietary software “Furtility” to create photorealistic hair, fur, feathers, and other details, providing easy integration with the live action footage. “We had a big advantage in this spot. Over the years we’ve researched and developed quite a bit of software for our feature film side and have been able to utilize and apply these technological advances to commercials. Without the use of Furtility, I don’t think we would have captured the nuances of these characters as easily,” added MPC Head of Production and Producer on Dell, Derek Macleod-Veilleux.

The resulting spot proved to be both visually imaginative and a great collaboration with agency Y&R. “Thomas” also introduced Furlined Director Bjoern Ruehmann to MPC in what could be a burgeoning relationship. “To work with MPC on the Dell commercial was more than great fun, it was a pleasure,” remarked Ruhmann. Their hard work, talent and passion brought the story of Thomas and his alternate universe to life and made the weeks we worked together an exciting adventure. They have a great share in the magic of this spot.”

“Filmmaking is The Big Doll House. It is the world’s best fun, the unwritten proviso regarding repayment is: do the best you can,” stated Mamet. “Commercials are particularly intriguing. Whether or not they are art I can’t say; but they certainly are drama.” Mamet joins Aéro Film’s already illustrious and talented pool of directors, including “Girl, Interrupted” and “Walk the Line” director James Mangold, along with a host of producers, cinematographers, VFX specialists, and editors. His upcoming HBO Films biopic “Phil Spector”, starring Al Pacino and Helen Mirren, will debut this March.
