ARTISTRY IN SOUND EXPANDS WITH NEW MIX STAGE / Mixes Two Upcoming Lifetime Projects

ARTISTRY IN SOUND EXPANDS WITH NEW MIX STAGE
Mixes Two Upcoming Lifetime Projects

Hollywood, CA: Artistry in Sound, Hollywood’s coolest audio post facility, announces the opening of its new mixing suite. The new stage features dual Icons mixing consoles, full HD projection, ProTools 10 and JBL Cinema Sound loud speakers. On the heels of this expansion, Artistry in Sound completed work on two Lifetime movies, “Ring of Fire” and “An Amish Murder,” in the new suite.

“’Ring of Fire’,” which tells the story of June Carter Cash, was a complex project,” says Kenneth Johnson, Owner and Founder of Artistry in Sound. Therefore he brought highly sought after mixer Rick Ash on board as the re-recording mixer handling dialog and music. Kenneth says, “I have worked with Rick on many HBO projects previously and always appreciated his talent and work ethic.”

Integrating the production dialog on “Ring of Fire” as it transitioned into song was critical. Rick explains, “It was important not to allow music to feel like pre-records.” In addition, crowds and atmospheres were integral to creating a natural space for the music to live, so extra care was required creating reverbs, delays and atmospheres. The music was richer sonically than much of the production sound, so in some instances it needed to be degraded to create a uniform sound field.

“In ‘An Amish Murder’ the production dialog was very challenging,” continues Rick. “Canadian exteriors in late fall made for brittle footsteps and production debris.” The Amish interiors were exclusively old wood floors, littered with pops and creaks, accompanied by room slap and echo. Rain and weather also posed challenges. All in all, it was a challenging production mix, especially due to the restricted mix schedule of three days.

Rick says it was a very was a very gratifying experience working with Ken and the new stage at Artistry in Sound. “I’ve opened many stages over the years and am grateful to say, Artistry in Sound has done a great job,” he states, “I think AIS has hit the mark. It’s a lean, clean, client friendly machine that can offer excellence at a competitive price. I hope to collaborate with Ken agai

Sound Designer & Re-Recording Mixer Kenneth L. Johnson

n. He’s got a winning formula and I hope LA film makers have the opportunity to experience this.”

Supervising Sound Designer Re-Recording Mixer Kenneth Johnson started his own facility after getting a call from Dean Devlin asking him to do all of the sound design for the show “Leverage.” Artistry in Sound was officially in business with employees and even became a Union signatory. “I wanted to create an artistic atmosphere as well as the ability to accommodate the challenging budgets of today’s market” Kenneth explains.

Brickyard Helps Adobe Execute Trick Play for Big Game Ad

Santa Monica,CA – Brickyard VFX delivered animation for Adobe spot “Animals,” a tongue-in-cheek reflection on huge Super Bowl ad spends, which premiered exclusively online. Conceived by ad agency Goodby Silverstein & Partners and directed by Tom Routson of Tool of North America, the spot features a pair of whip-smart talking animals. You can view the spot here: http://youtu.be/CwMYpH_oA-g

The Brickyard team, led by VFX Supervisor Mandy Sorenson and Head of CG David Blumenfeld, animated the animal stars of Super Bowls past discussing the value of online advertising. The live action was shot using a real horse and an actor in a chimpanzee suit. Brickyard digitally captured the heads of the chimpanzee and horse to extract geometric and textural data of the practical animals. The team of modelers, character animators and compositors completed precise 3D animated face replacements to synchronize the animals’ mouths with the dialogue. Using a 3-camera setup, Blumenfeld captured synchronized dialogue for visual references of the mouth and facial movements, and rigged each animal for full control of mouth movements and facial expressions. Sorenson color corrected the spot in Autodesk Lustre, and seamlessly composited the 3D facial components into the live action using Autodesk Flame, with a photorealistic result. The Brickyard team used Autodesk Maya for all 3D animation, and completed match moving in The Pixel Farm’s PFTrack.

“I’m very proud of what our team accomplished with this spot,” said Blumenfeld. “We only had about a week to complete two full facial rigs from start-to-finish, and when you see the commercial, it looks like you’re watching real animals having an actual conversation.”

“This is a clever spot that’s very topical and will resonate with viewers,” added Brickyard Executive Producer Jeff Blodgett. “This project really added a lot of fun to the fan response to the advertising game.”

Cobalt Digital Supports European Expansion With Presence at BVE 2013

BVE 2013 (Digi-Box.co.uk) Stand F12

FULL COMPLEMENT OF PRODUCTS WILL BE DEMONSTRATED ON DIGI-BOX.CO.UK STAND

Urbana, IL – Cobalt Digital’s (www.CobaltDigital.com) European expansion is on the fast-track as the manufacturer reveals plans to demonstrate its extensive range of award-winning 3G/HD/SD-SDI conversion gear at BVE 2013 in London on 26-28 February. Chris Shaw, executive vice president of sales & marketing, announced that the Company will have its latest loudness processing innovations alongside their new line of throw down boxes, established terminal gear, and control panels in Stand F12, a space shared with Digi-Box.co.uk, a well known and established UK-based master distributor.

“With the recent appointment of Digi-Box as Cobalt Digital’s master distributor for the UK and Southern Ireland, it is vital that we support their efforts in this region,” stated Shaw. “BVE provides an ideal launching pad for this new partnership and offers the opportunity to demonstrate the latest additions to our product line.”

Cobalt’s timely loudness processing solutions will take center stage at BVE. Using LINEAR ACOUSTIC® Aeromax™ technology, the multi-award-winning LMNTS™ (Loudness Management for n-Transport Streams), represents a quantum leap in multi-stream loudness processing by offering an economic, consistent solution that’s easy to integrate. LMNTS performs automatic loudness processing across many transport streams making it ideal for MVPDs and MSOs where a large number of diverse programming sources must be simultaneously controlled.

Cobalt’s SpotCheck™, their audio loudness measurement and recorded data logging system, takes the guesswork out of loudness measurement and logging, and facilitates EBU R128 and CALM compliance. SpotCheck monitors an IP, ASI, or a transmitted over-the-air MPEG stream at the transmit (emission) encode point, and provides easy-to-use, convenient, long-term access to loudness records for all programming initiated from a broadcasting facility.

Also new is Cobalt’s Blue Box Group, a series of throw down boxes providing HDMI to SDI, SDI to HDMI, analogue to digital, and digital to analogue conversion with audio embedding/de-embedding.

Cobalt will additionally feature its widely-popular FUSION3G® line of terminal gear that offers extensive signal processing options including up/down/cross conversion, loudness processing, up-mixing, and Dolby® transcoding; the COMPASS® colour correction card with OGCP-9000/CC remote control panel; the 9223 MPEG-4 Encoder card; OGCP-9000 and WinOGCP remote control panels for control and monitoring of FUSION3G and COMPASS cards with loudness metering and monitoring options; and much more!!!

Vista Systems’ Spyder Drives LED Wall at Flagship H&M Store in Miami

There’s a Spyder inside the flagship Miami store of fashion retailer H&M (Hennes & Mauritz) and no one is complaining – in fact, they’re delighted. Vista Systems’ Spyder X20 is a key component in the huge LED wall control system that’s capturing shoppers’ attention in the new 26,000-square foot store on Lincoln Road in South Beach, one of the largest of the 259 H&M stores nationwide.

AV integrator Media Services Worldwide, of North Bergen, New Jersey, created the control system for the LED wall, which replaced the projection screen in the former Lincoln Theater space that’s been restored as Miami’s first H&M outpost. “They’ve maintained the façade of the theater. Everything opens up to the 4mm LED wall with 2048×1536 resolutions, where the projection screen used to be,” explains Yossef Jackson with Media Services Worldwide.

Fashion videos sourced from a single player and back up unit are displayed on the LED wall. Every 15 minutes or so a one-minute sound, light and video show takes center stage. “Our control system orchestrates all of that,” says Jackson. “the C-nario digital signage software sends a commands to all devices (Light controller, Video switchers and the Spyder X20 does the smooth routing between sources.”

The integrator chose Spyder for its automatic scaling and transition capabilities. “The client wanted everything to dissolve from one element to another: fade out of playback, fade into the one-minute show, fade out to playback. Spyder does a smooth dissolve between sources to the four output channels,” Jackson says.

“We have a 2048X1536 resolution input, but the LED controllers are 1024X768 so we had to split the input into quadrants. The Spyder both scales and transitions; it takes one high definition 2048X1536 input from each of the four sources and pieces them together into four 1024X768 outputs. Everything runs through dual-link DVI matrix switchers in and out. They also have live inputs to show the video jockey stationed at the store.”

“The Spyder has been “flawless” in its operation. “Everything has been working great, and we as well as the client are very happy,” Jackson says.
